Why?
Gu Qinghuai frowned slightly, his eyes full of confusion, and his tone carried a hint of grievance, "Now you hate me so much that you can't even make me smile?"
Lin Xihe sat upright in the main seat of the carriage, her head lowered, her pearly teeth gently biting her lower lip, unwilling to utter a single word.
She thought to herself, "How can I tell you the truth? Should I tell you that seeing you laugh like that makes my heart flutter uncontrollably, and that I should stop laughing and stop seducing me? My heart belongs only to Ji Zhuo! I have to tell myself that a hundred times every day from now on."
Thinking of this, Lin Xihe wanted to slap herself. How could she be so spineless, unable to even control such a small thought?
Seeing that Lin Xihe remained silent for a long time, Gu Qinghuai assumed that she was angry, so he quickly softened his tone and coaxed her, "Alright, I won't laugh anymore. I won't laugh anymore from now on. Don't get angry and hurt yourself."
After saying that, he looked up at Lin Xihe and saw that she was still silent. He then tapped the wooden pillar of the carriage and called out to the coachman outside, "Let's go back to my residence first."
"Yes, General Gu." The groom outside responded loudly upon hearing the order.
"What would I do at your residence?" Lin Xihe raised her eyebrows slightly, looking at Gu Qinghuai with a puzzled expression.
"Go change into casual clothes, then I'll take you to the Zui Wushuang Restaurant in Nanluo Alley," Gu Qinghuai explained.
Upon hearing the name of the restaurant, a vague memory seemed to flash through Lin Xihe's mind.
"Why do you suddenly want to go there?" she asked softly.
"Didn't you used to love the food there the most?" Gu Qinghuai stared intently at her, his eyes full of expectation, as if trying to find a trace of the past in her reaction.
"Hmm..." Lin Xihe nodded slightly, her thoughts drifting away.
She did have a memory of such a restaurant, but in a daze, she remembered that there were also delicacies like KFC in her previous life. However, now, the fragrant and crispy taste of fried chicken had become blurry and almost forgotten.
"I heard you went to Zhensheng Village today?" Gu Qinghuai broke the silence inside the carriage first.
"Yes, they came to us on their own initiative. I just went to say a few words of justice, but I didn't expect them to be unwilling to listen."
Lin Xihe became interested at the mention of this matter, her eyes sparkling with a lively light.
“Such things happen quite often, and you did a good job today!” Gu Qinghuai stared at her, his expression serious and his words full of affirmation.
You actually think I did a good job?
Lin Xihe was slightly taken aback, clearly not expecting Gu Qinghuai to view her behavior in this way, and a hint of surprise flashed in her eyes.
"Yes, regarding Erhu's mother's matter, it's true that we shouldn't put all the blame on the daughter-in-law. It's commendable that you spoke up for her." Gu Qinghuai nodded slightly, his tone firm.
After a pause, as if suddenly remembering something, Lin Xihe hesitated for a moment before asking softly, "What are your thoughts on remarrying? Can you accept it?"
She had only asked casually, simply wanting to know the general attitude of men in this era towards this matter, but she did not expect that Gu Qinghuai would immediately connect it to himself.
"I can accept it."
Gu Qinghuai's gaze was deep and his tone was calm, but the next second, his eyes suddenly sharpened and his tone changed: "But I am still alive, and as long as I have a breath left, I will never allow such a thing to happen."
"What nonsense are you talking about!" Lin Xihe scolded, "Why bring up death and life for no reason? It's so unlucky!"
"Don't be nervous. How could I dare to die before I marry you?" Gu Qinghuai looked at Lin Xihe's nervous appearance and felt an indescribable joy welling up in his heart. The corners of his mouth unconsciously turned up and his eyes were full of doting.
Lin Xihe was startled to realize that her body was subconsciously so concerned about Gu Qinghuai's safety, and her cheeks flushed slightly.
She quickly retorted, "Who's nervous? Why should I be nervous? I just don't like people mentioning that word in front of me. You're the one who's nervous."
She added, "Your whole family is nervous!"
However, Gu Qinghuai found her flustered explanations all the more endearing.
The reason was that she was only concerned with refuting the claim of being "nervous," but did not refute her own statement that she would "marry her."
"I'm nervous. I don't know why, even though we're childhood sweethearts, my heart still races uncontrollably every time I see you. I'm so nervous." Gu Qinghuai stared intently at Lin Xihe, his deep eyes burning with passion, his tone sincere and ardent.
"Xihe, do you feel the same way?" he asked expectantly.
"No, shut up. All you ever say are things that upset me."
Lin Xihe hurriedly avoided Gu Qinghuai's burning gaze, feeling utterly helpless.
Why does Gu Qinghuai keep saying things that make her feel so confused and unsure of what to do?
She thought to herself, "If Gu Qinghuai could go on a business trip for a few months, that would be great!"
"You are my fiancée." Gu Qinghuai frowned slightly, his tone carrying an unquestionable air.
Lin Xihe muttered softly, "That wasn't my choice."
Gu Qinghuai initially thought that Lin Xihe's bad temper in the past two days was probably because she had just reunited with him and was still feeling overwhelmed by a flood of emotions.
But after spending the last two days together, he realized that Lin Xihe seemed to have undergone a complete transformation in the past year, and was completely different from before.
"Xihe, can you tell me what you've been through this past year?" Gu Qinghuai's gaze was fixed on Lin Xihe, his eyes full of inquiry.
"Why? I charge for my words, fifty taels of silver for a quarter of an hour." Lin Xihe said this, but she was actually quite nervous.
Although she inherited all of the original owner's memories, her personality was entirely her own.
She felt a chill in her heart, fearing that Gu Qinghuai might notice something amiss, and if she were to be treated as a demon and put on fire, that would be terrible.
"Speak freely, even if it takes a whole day, let alone a quarter of an hour, I can afford to pay you." Gu Qinghuai raised his chin slightly, his tone revealing an air of confidence and wealth.
Lin Xihe placed her hands on her sides and quietly moved back, trying to create some distance between herself and Gu Qinghuai. Then she tentatively asked, "What do you want to hear me say?"
Little did she know, Gu Qinghuai had seen all her subtle movements. His gaze was fixed on her, never leaving her for a moment.
"You can say whatever you want."
Gu Qinghuai's voice was deep and magnetic, echoing softly in the cramped space of the carriage.
"Even if it's less than fifteen minutes, you still have to pay for fifteen minutes. We've already been talking for quite a while, so just pay me the money. My mouth is dry and I have nothing more to say right now."
After saying that, Lin Xihe simply closed her eyes, leaned her head against the car window, and pretended to fall asleep.
She prayed silently that Gu Qinghuai would stop asking questions and give up.
