Seeing this, Lin Xihe knew that arguing further would be futile, so she stopped responding and just silently lowered her head to eat. However, the food tasted bland to her as well.
Only when the steaming bowl of medicine was brought in did the tense lines on Gu Qinghuai's face ease slightly and relax a little.
Lin Xihe sat quietly opposite Gu Qinghuai, her slender fingers just touching the medicine bowl, preparing to feed him the medicine, when a knock suddenly sounded at the door.
"General, Miss Lin's maid has brought a letter, saying it was delivered to the Lin residence. The Lin family's servants just brought it here." The guard's voice came through the door.
"And what about my maid?"
"We've returned to the residence, Miss Lin," came the reply from outside.
"Mine?" Lin Xihe frowned slightly, her eyes full of doubt.
In this capital city, the number of people who would write to him can be counted on one's fingers, but upon reflection, apart from Ji Zhuo, there should be no one else.
"Bring it in," Gu Qinghuai replied.
The door was gently pushed open, and the guard strode in. Lin Xihe reached out to take it, but Gu Qinghuai also reached out at the same time. The guard hesitated for a moment and could only hand the letter to his master.
Lin Xihe stared longingly at the letter in Gu Qinghuai's hand. The word "urgent" was prominently displayed on the envelope, followed by "To be opened by Lin Xihe." There was no other information.
She looked up at Gu Qinghuai again, only to see that his face was cold and stern, and he showed no intention of returning the letter to her.
Presumably, the maid Ling Shuang thought this letter was truly urgent, but as a maid, she could not enter the courtyard, much less open her master's letters on her own. Helpless, she could only ask someone to deliver it, but she did not expect it to fall into Gu Qinghuai's hands.
Lin Xihe thought that if Gu Qinghuai knew that the letter was written by Ji Zhuo, who knows what trouble he might cause in a little while.
"Take your medicine first."
Lin Xihe suppressed her anxiety, scooped up a spoonful of medicine, and said softly before bringing the spoon to Gu Qinghuai's lips.
Gu Qinghuai lowered his head slightly, drank the medicine, but his gaze never left Lin Xihe. He asked, "Don't you want to see who wrote the letter first?"
"I don't like others touching my things. Please hold onto this for me first, and I'll look at it after you finish your medicine." Lin Xihe forced herself to remain calm, continued scooping the medicine, gently blew on it, and then offered it to Gu Qinghuai's lips again.
Gu Qinghuai's lips curled into a slightly mocking smile as he tilted his head back and drank the wine. Then, he raised his hand and tore the letter in his hand in half, coldly laughing, "Coincidentally, I also hate it when others covet what belongs to me."
Lin Xihe's eyes widened, and her face instantly turned pale. Ignoring everything else, she immediately put down the medicine bowl and rushed forward to snatch the letter that had already been torn in two from Gu Qinghuai's hand.
Gu Qinghuai gripped the corner of the letter tightly, showing no sign of letting go, but he didn't make any further moves either, and they remained locked in a stalemate.
"How could you do this?" Lin Xihe's almond-shaped eyes widened as she angrily rebuked him.
She struggled with all her might, her slender hands waving in the air, trying to snatch back the letter that belonged to her. However, Gu Qinghuai's strength was far beyond her ability to resist. No matter how hard she tried, the letter remained firmly in Gu Qinghuai's hand.
"Why not?" Gu Qinghuai frowned, his eyes filled with resentment, meeting Lin Xihe's angry gaze without backing down.
"Why do you think you can just tear my things up like that?" Lin Xihe's voice trembled slightly, and her eyes were also a little red, showing both anger and grievance.
"Xihe, how much more do I need to give in to you?"
Gu Qinghuai suddenly reached out and grabbed Lin Xihe's wrist, his words filled with a mixture of anger and sadness.
"He sent people to be by your side, and I tolerated it."
“I tolerated that you stayed at your residence all night and didn’t leave until dawn.”
"Now that he's gone, he still dares to write letters?" Gu Qinghuai became more and more agitated as he spoke, his chest heaving violently. "His Majesty has already bestowed a marriage upon us, and the whole court knows! We already have a marriage contract and affection for each other, yet Ji Zhuo still dares to bully me like this time and time again. How can you expect me to tolerate this?"
As he spoke, he tightened his grip on Lin Xihe's hand slightly.
Lin Xihe winced in pain and instinctively struggled a few times, but found that she couldn't break free at all; the binding force was like an iron hoop.
Seeing Gu Qinghuai, who was acting like a raging beast and had lost his mind, Lin Xihe took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down.
She was secretly surprised, not expecting that Gu Qinghuai knew so much about those things.
"I'm not reading it anymore, let me go. The person who wrote the letter might not even be him." Lin Xihe's voice carried a hint of helplessness and compromise.
Hearing this, Gu Qinghuai slowly released Lin Xihe's hand, but his tense expression did not relax in the slightest. He gritted his teeth and said, "If it is Ji Zhuo, then I, Gu Qinghuai, will fight him to the death for the rest of my life."
"I'm not reading it anymore. Just tell them not to send any more letters." Taking advantage of Gu Qinghuai's loosening of his grip, Lin Xihe immediately pounced on him to snatch the letter back.
Seeing this, Gu Qinghuai stood up and held the letter high. He was tall and upright, standing at 1.9 meters, which was significantly different from Lin Xihe's height. Even if Lin Xihe stood on tiptoe and stretched out her hand with all her might, she could not touch the letter at all.
When Lin Xihe, in a moment of quick thinking, stood on a stool in an attempt to snatch the letter, Gu Qinghuai had already deftly opened it.
Lin Xihe immediately recognized the familiar handwriting on the letter and her heart skipped a beat; it was undoubtedly Ji Zhuo.
However, Gu Qinghuai's face turned ashen instantly after reading the contents of the letter.
While he was distracted, Lin Xihe suddenly tore off a piece of the letter, on which was written: "Never forget your promise, wait for me to return and marry you."
