Chapter 124
After that long conversation, Yueming began to avoid Yunkai again. Seeing that he was almost well, Lan Yingde subtly ordered him to leave. Yunkai was incredibly thick-skinned and pretended not to understand. He shamelessly stayed with Yunkai, feeling at ease.
One day, I went downstairs to the yard and looked carefully at the place where I had lived for more than half a month.
A small, two-story brick building with white walls and black tiles. The courtyard wasn't large, just a few steps from the main hall to the main entrance. The flowerbeds were filled with a variety of vegetables and medicinal plants. Cucumber vines climbed up the poles at the base of the wall, laden with tender yellow buds.
There is a flower stand above the stone table in the yard, and the honeysuckle blocks the scorching sun and emits a strong fragrance.
This place looked vibrant, yet it made him feel bitter. Back then, when they lived in that Bangkok mansion, he felt that he had wronged Yueming. This place couldn't compare to that Bangkok mansion, let alone the Lan family's mansion in Yunxiang.
But Yueming had to live here. Every morning, she squatted beside the water tank in the corner of the yard, brushing her teeth and washing her face while listening to the woman next door scolding her children.
Yueming avoids him in this family, Lan Yingde ignores him except when changing the medicine, Ai Ye and Ye Hu glare at him, and the only one who has a slightly good face is Lan Yingde's new wife.
Occasionally, when they met in the yard, Yueming's stepmother would not say a word to him, but would smile, nod and say hello.
He'd heard Yueming's stepmother was a former Huadan singer, a somewhat famous figure in Kunming. He'd assumed that even without all the jewelry and makeup, actresses would still be somewhat alluring. But he hadn't expected her to be aloof and unfazed, her expression unfazed by praise or criticism.
Lan Yingde likes this one? No, that's not right. Yueming Xiao's mother, the old lady also often said that Yueming's mother was a gentle and cheerful lady from a noble family.
The phone in the main room rang. Yueming and Lan Yingde had gone to the resettlement center, and her stepmother had gone to the market with two maids. Yunkai felt it was inappropriate to intervene since the master was away, so he stood there and waited for the phone to ring quietly. But as soon as the ringing stopped, it rang again, bringing the quiet and comfortable atmosphere to a tense state.
It must be something important, otherwise he wouldn't keep calling. Yun Kai walked into the house and answered the phone: "Hello, Lan's house."
The other party was stunned when he heard his voice, and then asked anxiously: "Are Lan Yueming and Mr. Lan home?"
Yun Kai instinctively knew the caller was Captain Du, so he politely said, "Everyone at home is out. If you have anything to say, I can pass it on. If it's not convenient, please call back later."
Hearing that no one was home, the person on the other end of the phone became even more anxious and asked quickly, "Where is Lan Yueming? Did he go to the resettlement center?"
Yun Kai sensed something was wrong and asked, "Is there something wrong with the resettlement center?"
"Last time when the bridge was bombed, some Japanese were still there among the refugees. Without identification, they couldn't stay in hotels or rent houses, so they were probably hiding in the resettlement center."
Yun Kai was startled when he heard that there might be Japanese in the resettlement center. He said anxiously, "Uncle Lan and Yue Ming went to the resettlement center early this morning. Send someone there quickly." Without waiting for Captain Du's response, he hung up the phone, rushed out the door, and shouted to the second floor, "Xiao Sai, take your gun and go to the resettlement center."
Feng Xiaosai had been with Yun Kai for a long time and was considered an experienced fighter. When he heard Yun Kai calling him, he took out the gun from his luggage and rushed downstairs.
When Yueming's stepmother came back with her vegetable basket, she ran into Feng Xiaosai handing Yunkai a gun. She was so frightened that her face turned pale: "You, what are you doing?"
Yun Kai didn't bother to explain. He put his gun on his back and told Ai Ye and Ye Hu, "Close the door tightly and take good care of your wives."
He was a man of great authority and prudence. Although the two maids had been disrespectful to him these days, they didn't dare to act rashly when they saw his stern face. Ai Ye looked at Feng Xiaosai with a puzzled look, "What happened?"
Feng Xiaosai mouthed the word "resettlement center" and followed Yun Kai away.
Feng Xiaosai didn't know the road, so he drove the car without caring whether he was on the street or not. He wanted to step on the accelerator.
Feng Xiaosai thought he'd seen a lot, but Yun Kai's reckless pursuit still frightened him to the point of paleness. He trembled and said, "Master, could you tell me what's so urgent that I need you to do this?"
Yun Kai's face was as gloomy as water, and he said nothing. Feng Xiaosai swallowed hard, not daring to ask any more questions.
We drove to the resettlement site at lightning speed and met Captain Du leading a team of people.
Although the atmosphere was not right, Feng Xiaosai felt that the two men were in a state of king-to-king confrontation.
There had been no formal introductions, and the pleasantries were omitted. Yun Kai frowned and asked, "Is the news accurate?"
Captain Du looked at Yunkai, who had been in such a state of disgrace before but had now regained his dashing demeanor, and recalled Zhaoqing's assessment of Yueming: she was a lecher. He felt that this assessment was very accurate.
Stopping his wild thoughts, he said to Yun Kai, "We caught a few Japanese who sneaked into the city yesterday. We interrogated them all night long before they were found out."
Yun Kai told himself not to panic. After taking a deep breath, he said to Captain Du, "Let's not alert the enemy first. Let's go in and check out the situation first, and evacuate those who can be evacuated first."
Second Lieutenant Du nodded. The most important thing at the moment was to prevent those Japanese from finding out that they had been exposed and were desperate.
The resettlement center consisted of a simple brick and wood structure. It consisted of a large bungalow and a smaller room. The larger room housed the refugees, while the smaller room served as an office for doctors and nurses. The structure was crudely built, with no windows, and the only entrance was the front door. While this prevented the Japanese inside from escaping, evacuating them was difficult, and the situation inside was impossible to observe from the outside.
Yunkai and Captain Du, accompanied by Feng Xiaosai and a group of soldiers, quietly crept to the door of the resettlement housing, attempting to peer through the gap in the white curtains. They saw several girls in white aprons milling around the refugees' beds. Yunkai's heart sank when he saw Yueming dressing a wounded patient in the back.
He whispered to Captain Du, "Your uniform is too conspicuous. I'll go in and get Yueming and the nurses out first. The others can figure it out later."
Captain Du raised his gun and nodded: "I told you to be careful and not reveal your identity."
Feng Xiaosai quickly said, "Master, I'll go in with you."
Yunkai nodded in agreement, tucked his gun behind his waist, took a deep breath, and lifted the white curtain before entering the room. The room was poorly ventilated, and showering wasn't easy for refugees. Add to that the smell of blood and disinfectant, and the air inside wasn't particularly pleasant. Yunkai ignored his disgust and, instead, put on a gentle smile and waved at Yueming, "Yueming, your father asked me to call you and the nurse to his office."
Yueming was surprised and puzzled when he saw Yunkai. He was surprised that he came here, and even more puzzled why his father asked him to do something?
She covered the wounded man with a blanket and walked towards Yun Kai with the medicine tray, asking as she walked, "Did Dad say anything?"
Watching Yueming slowly approaching, Yunkai felt as if every step she took was on the edge of a knife, his heart pounding. He tried to remain calm and said, "He didn't say anything, so he asked me to call you."
The other nurses believed him, dropping their work and heading to the office. Watching Yueming approach, Yunkai couldn't help but count her steps. Ten more steps to go. Ten, nine, eight... When he reached the fifth, a commotion erupted outside. The nurses leaving the house, startled by the sight of armed soldiers, screamed.
Yun Kai's heart sank, and he was about to go forward and pull Yue Ming over, but a man sitting on the bed moved faster. When Yue Ming passed by him, he grabbed her and put the black muzzle of a gun to her neck.
