After leaving the monotonous and poorly maintained Gobi Desert highway, Fagga and his group finally saw a town before noon.
Well... calling it a town might not be accurate, because even compared to the dilapidated Canvas Lane, the town in front of them was run-down. The people's faces had an excess of color, all blank, as if they no longer had much hope for the future.
Ruby rolled down the car window and looked around curiously.
Just then, a tumbleweed drifted in from afar, but no one bothered to look at it; everyone was in a hurry.
An elderly man stepped on a cactus while passing by, but he didn't cry out in pain.
It wasn't that the straw sandals he was wearing were of particularly good quality. Ruby zoomed in with her phone and saw that the cactus had long since withered, and even its thorns had become limp, offering no protection whatsoever.
Indeed, in such a desolate area, even people may not have water to drink, let alone plants.
So Ruby turned around, pulled herself up from the chair behind the class monitor, looked down at him incredulously, and exclaimed in surprise:
"Squad leader, your clothes are actually selling in the outer ring road?"
Based on what Ruby just saw, it might be a bit of an exaggeration for people from the outer ring to say that he looked malnourished, but he was definitely not a wealthy person.
For things like clothes, even the cheapest coarse linen clothes, people in the outer ring area probably wear them for three years on new clothes, three years on old clothes, and then patch them up for another three years.
"What you see now are ordinary people from the outer ring, not gangs. Let me tell you, the outer ring is a very complex place, from TOPS financial executives to beggars, you name it."
The squad leader raised an eyebrow, glanced at the innocent Ruby in the rearview mirror, and slowly drove the SUV to find a place to park.
"This is Wildfire Town, which, if I remember correctly, is within the territory of the Sons of Kalydon. They weren't assigned a good route this year, so it's pretty shabby... How about we eat here? If you don't like it, I'll drive another half hour to the Triumphs; they have the money to enjoy themselves."
"No need, this will do."
Fagar unbuckled his seatbelt, got out of the car, closed the door, and said, "You've been driving all morning, take a break."
"Oh, you actually care about me."
The squad leader stretched lazily as soon as he got off the bus, then put on a sly smile and said through the two bus windows, leaning over:
"What if Ellen gets angry? Fagga, will you stop Ellen to protect me... Ouch~~~ It hurts!"
Before he could finish speaking, the back door of the SUV was suddenly pushed open, startling the squad leader so much that he jumped back, but he was still hit by the door and hissed in pain.
"Serves you right, hehehe!"
Ruby stuck out her tongue and made a face, then grabbed the black and white doll, tucked it under her arm, and ran off into the distance.
The next moment, Eileen also got out of the car, gave the squad leader a cold look, and then left without saying a word.
"Wow, what kind of attitude is this? You deliberately plotted to harm the class monitor. I'll write you all down when we get back."
The class monitor covered half his face, pointed at Ruby and Ellen's backs with a trembling finger, and said in a tone that was half angry and half funny.
"Alright, let's go. I hope your aura will still be as... well, special, when you're discussing business with the Triumphs this afternoon."
Fagga walked around the front of the car, patted the class monitor on the back, and gestured for him to follow the two girls and a pet walking at the front.
"Hey, it's just business, I'm pretty good at that. But the real trouble is trying to get information out of you while doing business."
After covering his face for a while, the squad leader let go, turned around, took out a bottle of water from the car, drank it, threw the bottle back into the car, and looked at Fagga.
Faga was tasked with infiltrating the squad leader's inner circle, posing as a project manager sent by an elder in his family to assist the squad leader in negotiating business deals, and selectively sharing some information with the squad leader.
The class monitor was quite righteous; he agreed without much thought after hearing the request.
