Cats and catnip
Genetic modification, human experiments.
I've perfectly merged with plant genes, successfully becoming catnip. Luckily, I'm not an animal, and I still have my own consciousness. The girl next to me was given cat genes. The integration was successful, and she retains her human form, but her behavior, strength, and flexibility are very similar to those of a cat.
When the other genetically modified humans fought desperately to open the gate of the experimental base, she took me away with her.
Because I blended catnip, the emotions will bring the smell of catnip to affect her.
My cat loves to cuddle with me. We're searching for food in the apocalypse (yes, it's a post-apocalyptic setting, with a natural disaster). I'm teaching her how to talk, how to write, how to dress, and how to wash. I'm also teaching her little by little about human life. (Why am I raising a kitten again?!)
We found a library, but many of the books had been burned to keep warm. She loved children's drawings and found comics very enjoyable to read.
(And then... and then I woke up...)
