The early bird catches the worm
The sunlight after the snow was particularly dazzling, reflecting off the puddles. When Chen Yu walked into the classroom, he immediately saw Jiang Yizhou sitting at the back desk.
He still looked as casual as ever, with the zipper of his school uniform hanging loosely and his head tilted on his arm, as if he was catching up on sleep. The sunlight falling on his furry head made him look somewhat obedient.
Chen Yu's heart skipped a beat, and he subconsciously slowed down his steps. He walked to his seat and sat down. He glanced back quietly. Jiang Yizhou's eyelashes were very long, casting a small shadow under his eyelids.
"Have you seen enough?" A low voice suddenly sounded. Jiang Yizhou didn't look up, but a faint smile appeared at the corner of his mouth.
Chen Yu's face flushed red, and he hurriedly turned back, pretending to flip through a book, but his ears were sharp enough to catch the movement behind him - Jiang Yizhou stretched, and the chair legs made a slight sound on the ground.
Jiang Yizhou didn't mention what happened before the whole day, but occasionally he would poke Shen Yu's back with a pen when he was doing his homework.
"This question," Chen Yu turned around and saw Jiang Yizhou pointing at a function question in his exercise book, his brow furrowed like a pimple. "This is so complicated, is it made by a human?"
Chen Yu looked at the basic question and sighed helplessly: "This is a quadratic function maximum value problem. Did you listen carefully in class?"
Jiang Yizhou scratched his head, his eyes wandering: "Uh...it was very windy that day, the window was not closed tightly, and I was busy grabbing the curtains."
Chen Yu: “…”
He picked up the pen resignedly: "I'll tell you."
Jiang Yizhou immediately sat up straight, like a large dog with its ears pricked up, with anticipation glittering in his eyes.
Shen Yu spoke slowly, breaking down the steps as carefully as possible. Jiang Yizhou listened attentively, but his eyes occasionally drifted to Shen Yu's hands and face, and his mind was clearly not fully focused on the problem.
"Do you understand?" Shen Yu finished speaking and looked up at him and asked.
Jiang Yizhou suddenly came back to his senses and nodded randomly: "I understand, I understand!"
Shen Yu picked up his exercise book: "Then do it again."
Three minutes later, Jiang Yizhou's pen tip poked a small hole in the paper, and the notebook was blank except for the graffiti.
"I..." He tried to defend himself, "I think a butterfly flew by just now and I got distracted."
Outside the window were bare branches, not even a sparrow.
Chen Yu looked at his self-righteous look, feeling both angry and amused. In the end, he just pushed his draft paper over and said, "Copy the steps again and memorize the formula first."
Jiang Yizhou did as he was told, but his handwriting was more flamboyant than his appearance. Looking at the crooked handwriting, Chen Yu suddenly remembered the math competition the head teacher had mentioned.
"I'm going to participate in the city's math competition." He said it without any context.
Jiang Yizhou paused his pen, looked up at him, surprise flashed in his eyes, and then he smiled brightly: "Amazing, Shen Xueba! I'll go cheer you on when the time comes."
"You have to study hard too." Shen Yu looked at him and said seriously, "If you fail the final exam again, your parents will have to come to school again."
Jiang Yizhou's face instantly fell, and he wailed, "Don't mention studying to me, it gives me a headache..." Although he complained, he pulled the draft paper that Chen Yu pushed towards him again, and his fingers unconsciously traced the clear steps to solve the problem on it.
After school, Jiang Yizhou insisted on following Chen Yu.
"Isn't your house that way?" Shen Yu pointed in the opposite direction.
"I want to take a detour today, is that okay?" Jiang Yizhou raised his eyebrows and naturally took the bag containing the competition materials from Chen Yu's hand. "Is it heavy? I'll help you carry it."
The setting sun stretched the shadows of the two people very long, one tall and straight, the other thin, as they walked side by side on the snow. Occasionally, the sound of Jiang Yizhou being hit on the head by Chen Yu could be heard, mixed with laughter, melting the remaining snow and dispelling the winter cold.
Chen Yu looked down at his toes and suddenly felt that perhaps the poor student wasn't so hopeless. At least, he was willing to clumsily pick up the pen in order to keep up with his pace.
And he himself seemed no longer alone.
