A Guide to Raising Younglings During Natural Disasters

Natural disasters were incessant. Ning Xia had survived alone for six years and finally decided to return to her old home in Qianzhou to start anew. Unexpectedly, she rescued two skinny little ones...

Chapter 54: Jam is ready

The stove is under the shade of a tree, so Ningxia is not too uncomfortable.

Light a fire, add a small bowl of water to the pot, then pour in the sugar. When Ningxia sees that the amount is about right, she stops.

Wait until all the sugar is dissolved in the water and boils until it turns into thick juice, then pour the raspberries into the pot and simmer over low heat.

Jam is too complicated to make in Ningxia, but it’s pretty good just like this and the taste isn’t too bad.

When the pulp is mushy and the pectin is almost out, Ningxia puts the pot on the round table, covers it with a breathable lid, and waits for it to cool down before putting it into the pot.

At this moment, only half of the sun could be seen. Ningxia brought the steamer to the stove, heated up the corn tortillas, and placed the last bit of chicken soup aside to keep warm.

After the food was heated up, the two people who were reading under the eaves were called to come over for dinner. They reluctantly put the book back on the cabinet at the door of the living room, washed their hands and came over to eat.

Perhaps because they had just drunk a lot of chrysanthemum tea and eaten some wild fruits, Sangsang and Lin Yi each took a corn tortilla and felt full after drinking some soup. Sangsang didn't even finish the whole corn tortilla, and the remaining half was eaten by Lin Yi.

After dinner, the raspberry jam cooled, and Ningxia found the tea jars they used to store at home. They filled two of the roughly one-pound jars, and another halfway full. The little left in the pot was divided among the three of them. If Lin Yi hadn't stopped him, Ningxia would have crawled into the pot and licked it.

Ningxia puts the jam in the cabinet above the kitchen counter. They are all sealed jars, so there is no need to worry about them going bad in a short time.

"Let's go! Go to bed."

Because all the windows were sealed, it was not yet dark outside and I could not see clearly inside.

The three of them washed themselves carefully, changed into sleeping clothes, and even went into the master bedroom in the dark without lighting a candle.

It was not until she lay down in bed that Ningxia felt alive again. She had been busy all day and was exhausted.

The master bedroom's quilt had been thrown away because it was badly damaged. They were now using the quilt from the survival kit given at the trading post. It was a bit thin, but now it was just right, just wide enough for two people. Ningxia had to pull it sideways to ensure it covered all three of them. Although her feet were exposed, she could curl up and sleep.

"Sister Xia Xia, are you asleep?"

"No."

"What are we going to do tomorrow?"

Ningxia smiled and teased, "Why, I didn't make you tired today, but you want to work again so soon."

Lin Yi spoke after a while, "I just want to get the house ready as soon as possible."

Ningxia said confidently, "It will be fine. Aren't there a lot of flower pots of all sizes around the house? Let's plant some vegetables tomorrow!"

Now it was Lin Yi's turn to get excited, but then he didn't know what he was thinking about, and his tone became weak, "But, it won't survive in this season."

"Let's plant it inside the house. It would be a shame to throw away those flower pots. We can use them to plant some garlic and onions. We can plant it in the toilet. We don't need the toilet, and there are blinds in the toilet. During the sunny month, we can just open the windows for two hours every day to let in the sun. The room is not in the sun, so we don't have to worry about excessive sunlight."

Ningxia had a good plan. The blinds in the toilet were open when they arrived, and they had been open for six years without breaking. The light-blocking effect was still good. That place was simply tailor-made for farming.

"I'll use a water gun to water it!" Sangsang, who was lying in the middle, suddenly spoke, startling Ningxia.

Ningxia reached out and patted Sangsang's belly. "You bad boy, Sangsang, you scared me by making such a sudden noise."

"Hehe, Xia Xia, plant the vegetables tomorrow and I'll help water them with a water gun!"

"Of course, but you have to get my permission before watering. Otherwise, if you water too often, the vegetables won't survive."

"Okay! I understand~"

"Go to sleep, you have to get up early tomorrow."

"Sister Xia Xia, do we need to put the sofa away?" Lin Yi said as he hung the wet clothes in his hand on the vine. This vine was tied in the yard by Ningxia when she washed the sheets.

Ningxia took down the clothes she had washed yesterday and said, "No, this sofa is thick. I'll put it away tonight."

Lin Yi nodded and said no more.

After hanging the curtains, Ningxia pushed the cart to the front door and worked with Lin Yi to load the large and small flower pots, along with the soil, that were scattered around the outside of the house onto the cart. The pots were of varying sizes, and the cart couldn't hold many, so it looked like they would have to make several trips.

I carried the flower pots outside the yard, dumped the soil inside into the woods, and put the empty flower pots aside. Then I went back in and took out the other flower pots. After four or five trips, I was done.

The flower pots filled with clean soil can be stacked together according to their size. Ningxia only chose lightweight, plastic flower pots. After all, there are too many flower pots at the door, and ceramic ones are too heavy and impractical.

The three of them carried the flower pots in again and placed them directly in the toilet along with the tray of water under the flower pots.

Some of the Ningxia flowers that are too small are put in the bathroom and taken out when they are needed. The rest of the flower pots with larger diameters that can be used to grow vegetables are placed neatly under the blinds.

"Let's go."

"Where are you going, Xia Xia?" Sangsang looked like a scoundrel. The collar of her T-shirt had slipped to the side, revealing half her shoulder. Her pants had almost fallen to her knees, and she didn't even bother to pull them up. She staggered along behind Ningxia.

Lin Yi couldn't bear to watch it anymore, so he went forward to tidy up her clothes and followed behind her.

"Go out and dig."

“But it just fell out.”

"The soil is not fresh. Let's go dig some fresh soil."

"Okay~"

There was no hoe in the house, only two shovels, so we had to make do with it.
