Years later, Jiang Li still remembered that winter. Her homeland, usually like spring all year round, experienced a heavy snowfall that night. She alone, trudged through the snow-covered concrete r...
"Do you like...looking at the stars?" Jiang Li said absentmindedly.
"Yeah," Mo Jingchun sat on the bench and looked up at the night sky, "astronomy and stargazing is one of the few hobbies I have."
"Every time I see the stars twinkling in the night sky, I am reminded of a promise."
"What promise?"
"Heh," Mo Jingchun laughed bitterly, "a comforting promise that was fulfilled but not realized."
"Are you cold?" Mo Jingchun saw Jiang Li shivering slightly, so he asked with some concern.
Jiang Li shook her head, but the latter still took off his school uniform and put it on her regardless.
"Besides that, stargazing is still very interesting," Mo Jingchun continued. "I often feel happy, even blessed."
"Happiness?" Mo Jingchun's words seemed to pique Jiang Li's interest. "Do you believe in something as fake as happiness?"
"Fake?" Mo Jingchun shook his head. "No, happiness is real."
"Happiness does exist," Jiang Li's tone suddenly became sharp after hearing Mo Jingchun's affirmation. "This is the funniest joke I've heard this year."
"Why do you say that?" Mo Jingchun turned sideways and looked at Jiang Li in front of him. "Don't you believe that happiness exists?"
Jiang Li raised his head, rested his chin on his knees, and said in a trembling voice, "I don't believe it. At least for me, happiness is out of reach."
"Why do you say that? You want to..."
"Because I once had happiness," Jiang Li suddenly let go of his hands that were hugging his knees with an excited expression, sat up straight and turned to look at Mo Jingchun.
"Huff, huff, uh..."
The sudden excitement seemed to affect the wound on his head, causing Jiang Li to hold his head and groan in pain.
Even with a severe headache, Jiang Li continued to speak his words word for word, "I thought I had happiness, but when happiness destroyed me and pushed me into the dark and cold snowy night, I finally understood..."
"Happiness is built on the human heart, but the human heart is hypocritical and in the end it is just an illusory dream."
"Jiang Li," Mo Jingchun placed his hand on Jiang Li's back, "Don't get too excited."
Jiang Li ignored Mo Jingchun, "When the dream is over, happiness will naturally end."
As he spoke, Jiang Li's originally excited and sharp voice became lower, and he was shrouded in an indescribable emotion.
She fell silent again and returned to her previous curled-up posture to subconsciously protect herself.
"Yes, you are right."
After a moment of silence, Mo Jingchun took over the conversation. He placed his right hand on the back of the bench behind Jiang Li, raised his handsome face slightly, and looked up at the sky.
“Happiness is indeed built on the human heart. Only the interaction between people can bring true happiness.”
Mo Jingchun paused, retracting his gaze from the night sky and returning it to Jiang Li beside him. "People are very hypocritical, and this must be acknowledged."
"But," Mo Jingchun changed the subject, "the person who made a promise to me said so to me."
"People's hearts have gaps. Everyone has different gaps in their hearts, and the world itself has gaps. The reason why interactions between people can bring happiness is precisely because they can be compatible with each other and fill each other's gaps."
"Humans are social animals. One person cannot survive alone, so we need to connect with each other and fill the void in each other's hearts in order to be happy."
"This is true for family, friends, and lovers."
Mo Jingchun pointed at the moon hanging in the night sky, which was shining with a cold light.
"Even the brightest moon in the night sky has its own flaws and can only emit its own light by absorbing and reflecting the sun's light."
"The sun and the moon complement each other, and together they fulfill their duty of illuminating the world day and night."
"I'm just like you."
Mo Jingchun smiled, "I once had happiness, but that happiness lasted too short a time, so short that now I can hardly remember the memories of it."
Jiang Li remained silent and did not move at all.
"But I still believe in the existence of happiness. Maybe now I am just waiting for someone to appear."
Mo Jingchun continued, "Fate will guide us towards happiness."
It had been a long time since Mo Jingchun had spoken to someone so formally, and it had been a long time since he had mentioned that promise. He had never told anyone about what he had just said.
Although he and Jiang Li had only known each other for a month, he had seen the figure of that man in her more than once.
The person who deceived him and made him love and hate her.
She also saw the burning sincerity hidden beneath the cold surface. Unlike her, Jiang Li seemed to be a collection of contradictions.
She never shows her gentleness easily, nor does she show her sincerity to others. Indifference and aggressiveness seem to have become her basic way of protecting herself.
So on the rooftop at that time, when Jiang Li realized that a relationship was developing in the direction she least wanted, she decisively wanted to cut it off.
Jiang Li is afraid of interacting with people and afraid of connecting with others.
"Mo Jingchun," Jiang Li raised his head and looked at the sky with him.
"Um?"
“Does happiness really exist?”
Jiang Li stared at the moon hanging in the night sky with his almond-shaped black eyes, asking blankly.
"It exists." Mo Jingchun answered affirmatively, his expression very serious.
