Chapter 55 Holding Hands

Xu Zhaoyue wondered what her father's feelings were for her mother. In her memory, her mother was always smiling. However, these memories had long been worn away by life afterward. Her mother's departure took most of her father's feelings with her, and the father-daughter relationship was also taken away with her.

Tears still streamed down her face. It was only when the tears fell onto her hands that Xu Zhaoyue realized she hadn't thought so much about it at first. She quickly grabbed a handkerchief and wiped away her tears.

Xu Zhaoyue calmed down after a while. She thought of herself when she thought of Yue Lanxing. Two seemingly unrelated things made her cry. Just as Yue Lanxing appeared in her mind, Yue Lanxing's voice came from outside the door.

"Come in!" Xu Zhaoyue cupped her cheeks in her hands, touched her face to make sure there were no tears, and then let her in. But she ignored the redness in her own eyes.

"Young Miss, this is a new blueberry cake. It tastes best if eaten within two hours..." Yue Lanxing walked towards the young lady with the cake as soon as she entered the room, but stopped immediately after seeing the young lady's condition.

Xu Zhaoyue was initially turned to the side, but only looked up at Yue Lanxing after he stopped talking. "Why did you stop talking?"

Actually, Xu Zhaoyue's face wasn't bad after she finished crying. Her slightly reddened eyes were partially hidden by her hair, giving her a kind of alluring beauty. Her eyes were still watery from being washed by tears, and her focused gaze at Yue Lanxing made him feel a sense of pity.

Even though I did nothing wrong, I felt guilty for making such a beautiful person, who should be happy by nature, cry in front of me.

"Young Miss, can you tell me why you're crying? Who made you unhappy?" Yue Lanxing put down what she was holding, squatted down next to Xu Zhaoyue, and looked at her with emotion in her eyes.

Xu Zhaoyue met his gaze. Seeing how worried he was about her, she was about to explain but didn't want to talk about the past. So, the words that came out of her mouth were related to Yue Lanxing.

“You said you went to see Xuanxuan at dinner, but I saw you came back very quickly. At first, I wondered if the siblings weren’t very close, but… then I thought about your allergies. You must be having a hard time, right?”

As she spoke, Xu Zhaoyue's voice broke into a sob. She pursed her lips and stopped talking, her shoulders trembling slightly. She looked extremely aggrieved, as if she were feeling sorry for Yue Lanxing.

Yue Lanxing opened his mouth but couldn't say anything. He had almost forgotten this grievance. Perhaps every loss has its gain. He was sensible from a very young age. He knew from a young age that he had to be alone and not let anyone get close, not even his own mother.

But there was no other way; to survive, he had to stay away. When Yue Lanxing was a child, he couldn't fully control his emotions and would often cry and shout. His mother would watch him from outside, her eyes filled with tears.

As he grows older, he will learn to bear it on his own. He is fortunate to have been born into a family that can afford medical expenses, and even though his father has passed away, he has left behind enough property. He cannot let his mother worry anymore.

Today is the first time someone has pointed out his condition, and it's from a young lady who knows about his illness and is also the only woman he doesn't have an allergy to.

"So, is Miss sad for me?" Yue Lanxing's voice trembled with nervousness. He hoped to get a positive answer that his Miss cared about his past and pitied him.

"Hmm." Xu Zhaoyue's nod made his heart pound. This time, Xu Zhaoyue could really see the veins on his neck throbbing up close.

"Your heart is beating so fast, get up and calm down, take some deep breaths with me, come on..." Xu Zhaoyue was afraid that he would faint from excitement, so she quickly pulled him up to take deep breaths. She hadn't said anything, so why was he so excited?

Yue Lanxing was pulled up from the ground by her clothes, and then watched as the young lady nervously taught her the rhythm of deep breathing. Her heart started beating even faster. Seeing how seriously the young lady was teaching, Yue Lanxing also tried to learn seriously, but how could the pounding in her heart calm down so quickly?

After a while, Yue Lanxing was able to look at the young lady with a calm gaze. Xu Zhaoyue also felt his heartbeat subside, and then she stopped and sat down again.

Xu Zhaoyue saw that he was still standing, so she looked up at him. At that moment, the soft light shone on her face, and her skin seemed to glow under the warm light. Yue Lanxing was stunned for a moment, but Xu Zhaoyue thought he was sad.

"Want to hold hands?" Xu Zhaoyue extended her left hand to him, looking at him as if to encourage him.

Yue Lanxing looked at Xu Zhaoyue in disbelief. Was it okay to hold hands? Seemingly noticing Yue Lanxing's shock and hesitation, Xu Zhaoyue explained again, "I think you'll need a hug, but it feels a little strange for me to hug you. But I can let you hold my hand."

"If you want," Xu Zhaoyue added. This meant that she could hold Yue Lanxing's hand if he wanted it; if he didn't need it, she wouldn't force him out of a sense of self-pity.

Looking into the young lady's eyes, how should Yue Lanxing describe it? When she saw him, he felt happy and wanted to make her happy. He would unconsciously want to give her everything. But now, the young lady's outstretched hand seemed to be giving him the most meaningful thing in the world.

Unable to resist his inner greed, Yue Lanxing placed his hand on hers and immediately adjusted his posture upon contact, clasping his hands together. He then squatted down even closer to the young lady than before, so that she wouldn't have to stretch her arms out.

An indescribable sensation came from his right hand. The young lady's hand was naturally softer than his, but it was still slender and strong. He didn't know what it felt like to hold other girls' hands, but the young lady's hand was the most special one.
