Chapter 310 The King's Leisurely Day (Part 2)

Seeing that the newcomer was about to rush into the crowd, the guards standing in the front row shoved him to the ground with their shoulders and then drew their longswords and pointed them at the man's throat.

"Stop! He's a scholar from Muxi University!" Terence rushed forward and quickly stopped the guards.

Todd looked closely at the person on the ground.

The man was around thirty years old. His body was thin due to long-term malnutrition, and his skin was pale from not seeing the sun all day. His hands had ten long, thin fingers that looked like bamboo joints.

Terence explained to Todd, "This scholar is named Wayne Dunlop, a professor of physiology. He unlocked the secret of the human blood circulation and registered related patents, ending the church's thousand-year-old practice of blood astrology."

Discordant whispers arose from the surrounding scholars.

"This guy has never received a systematic education."

"He used to be a veterinarian, and I bet he's not much smarter than those pig butchers."

"I heard that he spent his days with corpses, and his room was filled with bottles and jars containing human organs."

"I really don't know how someone like that managed to get into university..."

Todd frowned; it seemed the guy lying on the ground wasn't well-liked by the other scholars.

Wayne scrambled to his feet, grabbed Master Terence's sleeve with one hand, and cried out, "Lord Terence, please come with me! My experiment is about to begin!"

“Wayne Dunlop! Watch your words and actions. His Majesty has come to visit the university today, and you must not be impolite…”

Before he could finish speaking, Terence suddenly opened his eyes wide and stammered, "Wait...wait a minute, you...experiment?! That experiment, you're still continuing it?!"

Terence, both angry and annoyed, was about to reprimand Wayne when he noticed Todd watching the audacious scholar with amusement. For a moment, he didn't know what to do.

Todd asked, "What kind of experiment is it? Can I take a look?"

Wayne then turned his gaze to the speaker: "Your Majesty? You are His Majesty?! That's wonderful! It would be my greatest honor if you could come and visit my experiments!"

Terence covered his forehead with his hand and said to Todd in a low voice, "Your Majesty, there are many other places to visit in the university. It is not necessary to go and see Wayne's experiment."

Todd waved his hand dismissively: "What does it matter? This visit didn't have a set route or destination. My plan is just to go wherever I want and see whatever comes to mind."

Seeing that he could not persuade the king, Terence gave up trying to stop him and followed Wayne to the basement of the experimental building.

During the journey, Terrence told Todd about Wayne Dunlop's life.

Wayne Dunlop was born into a family of serfs. Because his father was a veterinarian on a ranch, he followed the same path as him.

Due to his family's poverty, Wayne was unable to receive an education as a child. He sought every opportunity to learn and enrich himself by taking advantage of opportunities to treat livestock and borrowing books from farmers or nobles. He aspired to become a church clerk.

However, this good fortune did not last long.

When he was sixteen, a plague that swept across Moonbrook claimed the lives of most of his family. Since then, Wayne's temperament has undergone a dramatic change, and he has developed an interest in pathology and anatomy.

His travels took him to many countries until he finally settled in Twilight City a little over a year ago, where he studied microbiology at Twilight Academy for several months. Later, he spent all his savings to buy a microscope and sneaked into Silver Ring City, which was under barbarian control, to dissect and study the corpses of the dead, eventually discovering the secret of blood circulation.

"It was I who invited Wayne to join Twilight University and become a professor." Terence walked down the street, his expression filled with conflict. "This boy has an infinite passion and thirst for truth. While others are still asleep, he's already up and working on reports; while others are yawning and returning to their lodgings, he's still toiling away in the lab."

"In this fundraising effort for Twilight University, Wayne was the first to donate all his assets and transfer his patent rights to Twilight University free of charge."

Todd listened and nodded, "He sounds like a very excellent scholar."

Terence scratched his beard in frustration: “As a follower of truth, he was undoubtedly excellent; but as a researcher of humanity, many of his actions were controversial, even heretical.”

Upon hearing the words "deviant," Todd was about to ask what was going on when the group arrived at the entrance of Wayne Labs. The scene before him made him temporarily forget his question.

A dozen or so men, women, and children, dressed in simple clothes and with pale faces, stood at the entrance of the laboratory, looking inside with worried expressions.

Todd asked, "Who are these people?"

Terence sighed: "These people are all family members of the experimental subjects."

"The experimental subject's family?!"

Todd paused, then pushed through the crowd and walked to Wayne's lab.

A huge glass screen separated the laboratory into two spaces.

Inside that space, there was a strangely shaped metal bed, on which lay a withered, emaciated, and dying naked old man.

Todd frowned and asked Wayne, who was busy transcribing data in the room, "What's going on?!"

While recording Lao Rao's vital signs, the latter said without looking up, "This is an experiment about life and soul."
