An associate professor in life engineering travels to a medieval European fantasy world. Using modern biochemistry, he discovers that viruses, bacteria, and parasites extinct in human history are a...
Carol Antarevic is a 26-year-old, unmarried porter living in the port district of Duskwood. His father abandoned the family and went to a distant place when he was young. During the Silver Ring War, Carol's family was forced to move to Duskwood to escape the war.
After that, his mother found him two more stepfathers. But as it turned out, this woman's choice of men was truly regrettable.
His two stepfathers absconded with the family's valuables, leaving Carroll with only his three younger sisters.
His mother, after experiencing three nightmarish men, had long lost the will to live, and alcohol and gambling became the only means of support for this poor woman.
As for all the expenses for the family of five, including food, clothing, housing, and transportation, the burden naturally fell on the only male member—Carol.
The tall and strong Carol, judging by his appearance and physique alone, would hardly be the guess that he is still unmarried. However, his impoverished and dilapidated family background has deterred matchmakers from trying to arrange a marriage.
Fortunately, the naturally optimistic and open-minded Carroll didn't care too much about not being able to find a wife. In his view, by working hard and saving money, he would be able to open his own snack shop in the Mariner's Bay in the port area in the near future, and one day he would be able to change his family's predicament.
That's what he originally thought...
One day, Carole's mother accidentally discovered his hidden money bag at home.
As a result, Carole's hard-earned wealth of nearly ten years, accumulated through his work as a barge hauler and laborer, was gambled away by his mother in a single night.
Despondent, Carroll had a big argument with his mother the next morning and ran into the streets in the pouring rain. Feeling down, he wandered aimlessly through the streets as he got soaked.
It was nearly noon when the rain stopped and the sky cleared.
Soaked to the bone, Carol was drawn to an event called "Alien Recruitment" as she passed through the Civic Square in the North District of Twilight City.
A middle-aged man who looked like a government official stood on a wooden platform in the square, pointed to a notice beside him, and shouted to the onlookers: "Holy King! Twilight City is now recruiting volunteers to experience becoming an alien!"
These words caused an uproar among the crowd.
"Become a mutant?! You mean those mutants who can set things on fire with a clap of their hands and freeze things with their breath?!"
"I've heard from others that people of different species can be infected with all sorts of diseases!"
"That's right, the lifespan of mutants is not long!"
Hearing the cacophony of voices below, the "government" official on the stage shouted angrily, "What's all the noise about?! You've all seen how many mutants there are in Muxi City! Remember this! The rumor that mutants are prone to illness is outdated. Muxi University has already developed numerous "medicines" specifically for mutant diseases!"
The official's words did nothing to diminish people's skepticism. After all, although there were already five thousand mutants in Muxi City, firstly, these people lived in a low-key manner, and secondly, compared with the total population of Muxi City, the number of mutants was really too small.
Therefore, most people in Muxi City hold a curious yet respectful attitude towards this mysterious group that they have heard of but rarely seen.
Seeing that no one responded to his call, the official was visibly losing face. He then raised his voice and said, "Becoming a mutant means you will gain a special ability. X-ray vision, wound regeneration, increased strength... these abilities that were unimaginable before will appear on you. Aren't you even a little bit tempted?"
The people below the stage looked at each other in bewilderment. In their view, life was more important than the temptation of superpowers.
Finding the task assigned by his superiors difficult to complete, the official shook his head helplessly and finally offered his last bargaining chip: "Anyone willing to be vaccinated and become a mutant can apply for a Silver Moon."
Someone in the audience sneered, "Listen to this, a Silver Moon! So a life is only worth a lamb."
The official gritted his teeth: "Two silver moons!"
Finding that there were still no Silver Moons, the official gritted his teeth and roared, "Five Silver Moons!"
After a deathly silence, a voice rang out from below the stage: "They really will give out five Silver Moons?"
Seeing the young man speaking up below the stage, the overjoyed official jumped off the wooden platform, grabbed him, and brought him onto the stage.
"May I have your name?"
“Carol, Carol Antarevic.”
“Very good, Carol, as long as you are willing to get vaccinated and pass the test, I guarantee you will get 5 Silver Moons!”
And so, because of a single sentence he uttered, Carol unwittingly became the first "alien volunteer" in Twilight City, and because of that sentence, the wheel of his fate began to turn in an unknown direction.
Standing inside the tent marked with a red "protective umbrella," Carol watched as the blood in her veins was drawn from her body and into the syringe. Her body began to tremble slightly, and she felt fear and unease.
After the blood draw, while waiting for the matching results, Carol stared at the needle marks on her arm without saying a word.
He would occasionally glance at the tent's exit, wondering if becoming an alien for five silver moons was worth it, and whether he should leave immediately.
“Carol Antarevic!” A thin scholar in a dirty lab coat stood in the tent and called out.
Looking at the strong, ox-like young man who stood up and looked at him, the tall, thin scholar turned around and said, "Come inside with me."
