An associate professor in life engineering travels to a medieval European fantasy world. Using modern biochemistry, he discovers that viruses, bacteria, and parasites extinct in human history are a...
Todd pondered Wayne's words repeatedly and said, "You're assuming that if the soul is a special kind of particle, then according to wave-particle duality, it can exist as a particle within a living organism or as a diffuse wave in the outside world."
Wayne said excitedly, "That's right, yes."
Todd continued, "Since particles have weight, while wavelengths have no weight, it can be deduced that the resurrection worms modified by the Tyrant Virus—I mean, the necromancy parasites—possess a special ability that allows the soul to freely switch between particle and wavelength forms according to the host's will, thus causing the fluctuating weight in Marcus's living tissue?"
Wayne nodded vigorously: "When the necromancy encounters a soul in wave form, it can capture it and store it in particle form; and when the necromancy wants to, it can transform the particle-form soul in its body into a wave-form soul and release it."
Todd began to recall the words of the forerunner Scáthach and Leviathan.
The soul is a special kind of dark matter.
So, if the soul is a kind of aggregated particle in dark matter, then Wayne's explanation does make sense.
Todd rested his chin on his right hand, pondered for a moment, and then said, "If your assumption is correct, I have many, many questions."
Wayne: "Your Majesty, I also have many questions, but I may not have the answers. However, we can at least discuss them."
Todd: "First, if the necromancy has the ability to contain and spread souls, where are these souls stored when they are contained? And what do they eventually become when they are dispersed?"
Wayne: "I don't know."
Todd touched his forehead and said with a wry smile, "Of course you wouldn't know..."
Wayne thought for a moment and then said, "But Your Majesty, do you remember what happened before? Some of the living beings killed by the undead will be unable to return to heaven."
Todd pondered for a moment and said, "I remember this. Anyone who has established a soul link with Heaven and is killed in the war against the dead has a certain chance that their soul will not be able to return."
Wayne said, "If the necromancy parasite has the ability to collect and send souls, then everything makes perfect sense. At the moment of a creature's death, it can capture those souls that are floating in the air and spread out like waves, storing them as particles. So, I suspect that these souls are stored within the necromancy parasite's body. As for what happens to these souls in the end, the worst outcome is that they will be digested within the parasite's body, or they may be transferred to other places."
Todd: "So you're saying that necromancy parasites use souls as nourishment."
Wayne: "Yes, that explanation explains everything."
Todd: "Okay, second question, why can someone like Marcus become a self-aware undead, while other living beings killed by undead only become soulless zombies? Logically speaking, shouldn't any creature that comes into contact with undead parasites be stripped of its soul?"
Wayne: "I can't give a definite answer to this question either, but I can try to speculate. I once heard Your Majesty mention the birth of the Tyrant, first using Sutherland archaea to improve cellular immunity, and then using the Tyrant to mutate body tissues. Following this logic, when an organism becomes a co-host of Sutherland archaea, the Tyrant virus, and the Resurrection Worm, its nervous system will mutate into a tissue capable of coexisting with the undead parasite."
Wayne: "Even, this mutated nervous system can resonate with the necromancy parasite on certain occasions."
Todd pondered for a moment and asked, "If a person has Sutherland bacteria, Tyrant virus, and necromancy parasites all in their body at the same time, will their nervous system mutate and be able to resist soul corruption?"
Wayne: "Judging from Marcus's current condition, that's certainly the case."
Todd rubbed his forehead: "There's another question. Soul spaces, including the heavens created by the Forerunners, can also store and disperse souls. Could these be related to the necromancy parasites?"
Wayne paused, unsure how to respond.
Todd glanced at him and shook his head: "I was being nosy. You can't answer that question..."
Wayne looked at Todd, who looked distressed, and for a moment he didn't know what to say. The two fell into a long silence.
Todd finally sighed, waved his hand, and said to Wayne, "Let's put aside the academic issues of the soul for now and get back to Marcus. What were the results of the antibody experiment on the necromantic virus?"
Wayne bowed his head and said, "Your Majesty, the result is not very good."
Todd: "Tell me about it."
Wayne: "After a considerable period of screening and separation, I finally selected about 140 antibody samples, all of which came from Marcus's nervous system and were immune proteins from plasma cells, only with different morphologies and functions."
Wayne: "Next, I classified the different samples of the necrovirus. I made virus control agents for each of the necroviruses from different locations, environments, and organisms."
Wayne: "Next, I will fuse each of the 140 antibody samples with the Necrovirus control agent to observe which antibodies have an immune response to the Necrovirus."
Todd leaned forward, his voice slightly tense: "And the result?"
Wayne: "After fusion comparison, I found that the highest efficiency of the antibody sample in Marcus was only 53% in generating an immune response against the Necrovirus."
