Chapter 88 The Gamble

Since transmigrating to this other world, Todd, who had never encountered nobles, still held impressions based on his past life's movies, novels, and comics. He had once believed that this group represented nobility and elegance. Therefore, in order to obtain the sales rights in Silver Ring City, his actions at the card table were primarily based on his past experience. All he needed to do was deliberately lose a few pots of roses at the game, creating some mutual amusement, and then calmly and mutually beneficially negotiate with these people. Everything would then fall into place naturally and logically.

That was originally what he thought.

But he ultimately forgot one crucial thing: this was not the past of civilization, but a medieval world where barbarity and darkness coexisted. Any behavioral norms and social perceptions that had proven effective in the past would be completely overturned here.

If Bishop Fabian's admonition could only be considered a warning, and the nobles' cheating in the gambling game could only be considered an unpleasant interlude, then the inhumane treatment of other races truly made Todd understand this truth.

These so-called nobles are nothing but barbarity and tyranny; their greed is like a bottomless abyss, with no end in sight.

Since that's the case, why not unlock the chains binding the 'Greedy' beast and watch it devour everything...

Todd returned to the gambling table and picked up a playing card made of silver-copper alloy. The front of the card had a hand-drawn design, while the back was a smooth, mirror-like surface. He tried to use his 'X-ray vision' ability and found that penetrating the thin metal was no problem at all. Although the design on the front was faintly visible, it was a piece of cake to identify the card.

Viscount Kennard asked Todd, "Father, what do you mean by 'playing it big'?"

Have you ever heard of a geometric sequence?

People looked at each other, but no one knew.

Todd picked up a playing card and said slowly, "Losing one card means 10 Silver Moons."

He held up the second card: "The second card doubles, that's 20 silver moons."

The third card: "The third card doubles again, making it 40 silver moons."

He held up his three cards together: "If the game ends and I still have three cards left, I'll have lost 70 Silver Moon tokens. Except for the method of calculating the tokens based on the number of cards remaining, all other rules are the same. How about it?"

The Viscount carefully considered the situation. If the previous bets had proceeded in this manner, Todd would have already won all the roses he possessed, instead of dragging it out until now. Besides, even in the worst-case scenario, he would only lose a thousand or so silver moons at most, which would be insignificant to him.

Kennard exchanged a glance with another nobleman at the card table and nodded: "I'm tired of winning and losing tens of silver coins a game. Let's do it your way! But do you have that much money?"

Todd glanced at the potted roses placed in front of the Queen, then at the eleven potted roses behind the Viscount, and asked, "Do you still agree on the same price for flowers from this sacred place as before?"

"I just had someone check it out, and it's still 50 silver coins a pot!"

Todd nodded, indicating that he had no further objections.

At this moment, Queen Mary, who was sitting in the main seat, opened her mouth as if to say something, but after looking at the priest's expression for a while, she finally gave up on speaking.

The game restarted under the new rules, and Todd multitasked, playing cards while using his superpowers to observe everything around him.

Soon, he noticed that the two nobles at the card table were glancing up behind him every now and then.

Todd held the card face down behind his shoulder and used his "Eagle Eye" ability to carefully examine the glowing reflection. A male servant who was frequently touching his head not far behind him caught his attention.

This person sometimes touches his ears, sometimes touches the bridge of his nose, and sometimes raises his fingers and sometimes lowers them.

A voyeur?

Peeking at your opponent's cards and then using hand gestures to signal them is an old-fashioned cheating method, but it's simple and effective.

Using his 'X-ray vision' ability to look at the table in front of him, Todd discovered a hidden secret in the deck of cards held by the two people opposite him.

The two nobles opposite each other had their cards stacked together on the table, face down, with their thumbs pointing inwards, blocking the view of others. Beneath the table was a hidden groove; pressing down with the palm would activate it, allowing the smooth metal cards to slide down the groove to the other end. The other person could then simply press down with their palm to flick the cards into their hand.

Todd shook his head. It seemed these people had really gone to great lengths for this bet.

The game ended, and Todd, as the pirate, lost 4 cards and had to pay 160 silver moons (10+20+40+80) to the viscount, who was the knight. To the amazement of the onlookers, the stakes were converted into three pots of roses.

Are you sure you want to continue?

Unexpectedly, the voice came from Queen Mary. She stood up from her seat, looked at the priest, and there was something in her eyes that he couldn't understand.

Todd and she looked at each other for a moment, then Todd nodded emphatically.

The queen sighed, waved her hand, and sat back down.

A new game has begun.

This time it was Todd's turn to be the Cavalier, and after repeated defeats, he demanded to shuffle the deck himself.

Viscount Kennard looked at him with amusement, as if he were looking at an idiot who had lost so badly that he started to act nonsensically, and quite generously granted the request.

Todd shuffled the cards in a rather strange way. He laid all the cards face down and back up on the table, reciting a prayer while taking out the cross from his chest and tapping the back of each card three times. After doing all this, he picked up the cards one by one.
