Chapter 57 Skip-Grade Exam

After returning from Beijing, Xia Minmin spent all her time reviewing her fifth and sixth grade lessons, except for going out for a run every morning and evening.

"Hello, is this Principal Zhu? I'm Xia Minmin's mother."

"Oh, I remember now, hello Aunt Xia. How can I help you?"

"That's right. Didn't you tell Xia Minmin at the end of last semester that she would go to sixth grade if she passed the exam before the start of the new semester? When do you have time, I'll bring her here for the exam."

"Xia Minmin, let's arrange for you to come to my office at 8:00 AM on the 13th day of the first lunar month, okay?"

"Okay, thank you, Principal!"

Seeing her mother hang up the phone, Xia Minmin asked anxiously, "Principal, did you agree?"

"Agreed."

Xia Minmin jumped up excitedly after hearing this.

"When is the exam!?"

"The thirteenth day of the first lunar month."

After hearing the exact time, Xia Minmin went back to her room to study.

Originally, there were many gatherings after returning home, but Xia Jianguo and Li Chunmei moved them all to after the Lantern Festival. Now, their main focus is on Xia Minmin's grade skipping exam.

A few days passed in the blink of an eye.

On the thirteenth day of the first lunar month, Xia Minmin took her grade-skipping exam.

Li Chunmei got up early and specially bought a fried dough stick and two eggs from outside the community for Xia Minmin to eat, symbolizing that she would get a perfect score on the test.

thump thump thump…

"Please come in."

"Hello Principal Zhu, I am Xia Minmin, and I am here to take the grade skipping exam."

Principal Zhu was a kind grandfather, about the same age as Xia's maternal grandfather.

"Oh, it's you, little girl! The test paper is ready for you. Go sit in the meeting room next door. I'll go call Mr. Wang, the sixth-grade teacher. If nothing unexpected happens, he'll be your homeroom teacher."

"Thank you, Principal!"

Did you come alone?

"My mother didn't bring me here; she was waiting for me downstairs."

"Okay, I'll go and call Teacher Wang over."

Xia Minmin sat inside the conference room, her expression serious and focused.

A middle-aged man pushed the door open and came in carrying several test papers. "Are you Xia Minmin? I'm Ms. Wang, the homeroom teacher of Class 1, Grade 6. I'm in charge of proctoring today."

Xia Minmin took out the stationery she needed from her schoolbag and arranged it.

"Xia Minmin, are you ready? I'm going to hand out the test papers. Today we're taking Chinese, Math, and English tests. The test lasts three hours. If you need to go to the bathroom during the test, please raise your hand."

"Teacher Wang, I understand."

Teacher Wang handed the three test papers in her hand to Xia Minmin.

Xia Minmin took the test paper, glanced at it briefly, and then started writing down the questions.

Xia Minmin was very focused throughout the exam. There were quite a few teachers at the meeting room entrance who knew about the skipping-grade exam, and they came over to join in the fun, but she was completely unaware.

"Teacher Wang, I've finished! You can collect the papers now."

"Have you checked it?"

"It's been checked two or three times."

Upon hearing Xia Minmin's words, Teacher Wang collected the test papers. "Your mother came with you, right?"

"Yes, Teacher Wang, she's downstairs."

"Go down and bring her up. We need to discuss something with your mother later."

After saying that, Teacher Wang took the test paper and left the office.

Xia Minmin packed her stationery into her schoolbag and went downstairs to find Li Chunmei.

...

Back in his office, Mr. Wang asked two of his students—the Chinese teacher and the English teacher—to grade the test papers.

The other teachers in the office gathered around to watch them grade the papers.

"She looks pretty good. So why is Mr. Lin, who used to tutor her in math olympiad, saying she's stupid?"

"You know what kind of person she is. She loves to accept gifts, but if she doesn't give gifts, she goes around badmouthing others."

"Let's not talk about her anymore. How are the kid's grades?"

Teacher Wang looked at the three test papers with satisfaction. "The results are quite good, except for one point lost in Chinese."

"Old Wang, it looks like your bonus is in the bag this year!"

"Remember to treat us!"

"I'll definitely treat you all when I get the prize money."

Teacher Wang brought the test papers to Principal Zhu's office.

"Principal, this child is really good. He finished three test papers in an hour and a half, got full marks in math and English, and lost one point in Chinese."

"Are you satisfied now? I've been observing this child for several years. I wouldn't have agreed to let him skip a grade if his grades weren't good. Who knew you would make excuses and refuse to accept him?"

"Yes, yes, yes, the principal's insight is truly remarkable; we are all in awe of him."

Stop flattering him and take good care of this child.

"knew."

Xia Minmin and Li Chunmei also came up from downstairs.

“Teacher Wang just finished grading the papers and you all came up here,” Principal Zhu said with a smile.

"Hello, Principal Zhu and Teacher Wang," Xia Minmin greeted them familiarly.

"Mrs. Xia, after school starts, please take your child to register in Class 1 of Grade 6. This is Teacher Wang, the homeroom teacher." Principal Zhu introduced Teacher Wang to Li Chunmei.

Principal Zhu said, "Congratulations to Xia Minmin for becoming our school's youngest sixth-grade student."

"Thank you, Principal, and thank you, Teacher Wang. Thank you for your help today!"

"Aunt Xia, you're too kind. This is what we should do."

On her way home, Xia Minmin kept humming a song. She was about to start sixth grade and would be going to junior high school in the second half of the year.

Just thinking about starting junior high at age 8 makes me happy. It's great to be able to skip several years of schooling. All the hard work these past few years has paid off.

"Are you this happy about taking the grade skipping exam?" Li Chunmei asked, looking at her excited daughter.

Xia Minmin exclaimed loudly, "Yes, I'm super, super happy! I'm finally going to get rid of those brats!"

"You're just a little kid yourself, how dare you talk about others like that?"

"They're just little kids, so childish!"

"Fine! Fine!"

Li Chunmei led Xia Minmin toward the convenience store; her husband was still waiting for good news.
