It is now the rainy season in South America, so the water level of the Paraná River is rising rapidly. Therefore, during the rainy season, it is not enough to rely solely on the main dam to discharge floodwaters for power generation. The flood gates must also be opened to discharge floodwaters according to changes in water levels.

This 386-meter-long flood discharge gate should be scientifically called an "overflow dam", which refers to a dam that can discharge floodwater from the top, also known as a rolling dam.

Overflow dams can be divided into three types according to the flow pattern: dam top overflow, dam surface overflow and large orifice dam surface overflow. The overflow dam of Itaipu Hydropower Station is a large orifice dam surface overflow dam.

This overflow dam, which is equipped with special flood discharge gates, can regulate the reservoir water level and discharge flow. It is usually used downstream of reservoirs with relatively large storage capacity. During the flood season, it can actively adjust the reservoir capacity to ensure the safety of the reservoir.

This overflow dam has fourteen huge flood gates with a width of 20 meters. When the flood gates are fully opened, the scene is so spectacular that even the galloping of thousands of horses is not enough to describe it.

Although the flood gate was not fully opened at this time, the water pouring out of the gate still made a thunderous sound. Then, after the water flowed through the 420-meter-long flood discharge ramp below the gate, it stirred up splashes of water dozens of meters high at the bottom of the ramp!

The sky was filled with water mist, covering the area within a radius of several hundred meters. Tourists standing nearby would soon be soaked by the mist from head to toe.

Yang Jing and his friends had seen hydroelectric power stations discharging water on TV or in movies before, but how could the scenery on the screen be as shocking as being there in person?

If you don’t stand next to the flood gate, you will never be able to experience the shock that can shake even the human soul!

The flood discharge takes a long time, so it is impossible for tourists to stand here and watch the dam discharge. So after enjoying this extremely shocking scenery up close for a while, the bus continued to move forward. However, this time the bus did not continue to go to Paraguay, but turned around at the top of the dam and went directly to the top of the main dam.

Only by standing on the top of the 196-meter-high main dam can you feel the grandeur of this man-made structure.

There is a two-lane road on the top of the dam, and tourists are allowed to get off the car to take pictures.

So on the top of this dam, on one side is a reservoir with rippling water that has no end in sight, and on the other side is a dam body as tall as a cliff. The feeling is extremely shocking.

If you don’t see it with your own eyes, it’s really hard to imagine that humans can actually build such a magnificent building. No wonder the Itaipu Dam was immediately named one of the seven man-made wonders of the modern world after it was completed.

This title alone is enough to prove the greatness of this dam.

After playing at the hydropower station for nearly two hours, until it was getting dark, the group of tourists were taken back to the entrance of the hydropower station by bus.

It’s true that this trip was not in vain. At least I witnessed a miracle of modern architecture with my own eyes and felt the shock of this dam up close. This is definitely worth the price of the ticket.
