Song Yan never thought she would experience a day of transmigrating into a book. Well, if she transmigrated, she transmigrated! The 1970s weren't that scary.
However, she didn't expec...
"Old Shen! Brother Shen?" That's what Secretary Fang called him when they chatted in a personal manner.
"What do you want to say?" Shen Changchuan asked, his eyes still slightly closed.
"Shen Qian is very smart, and he's very skilled. You don't need to worry, I believe he can complete the mission."
"The day he completes his mission, you and your son will be able to recognize each other." This was the first time Secretary Fang had spoken to Shen Changchuan after learning that Shen Qian was going to carry out his current mission.
"You couldn't resist anymore and finally tried to coax me with sweet words?"
Who knows how long this mission will take? Two comrades have already sacrificed their lives, haven't they?
"Whether he is my son or not, he is a soldier, and he must fulfill his mission." Shen Changchuan spoke with his eyes still slightly closed, but he felt his eyes were sore and uncomfortable.
He cannot acknowledge his son until Shen Qian completes his mission.
Once Shen Changchuan acknowledges his son, would he allow him to remain holed up in that remote, mountainous arsenal? With his qualifications and the status of Shen Qian's mother as a martyr, arranging a good job for Shen Qian would be no problem at all. And no one would have the right to say anything.
But how will the son complete his mission if he leaves the arsenal?
Even if they could find ten or eight reasons to keep Shen Qian at the arsenal, as long as they knew he was Su Yinghong's son, they'd still be on high alert, guarding against him. What kind of mission could they possibly carry out? Secretary Fang didn't know what to say anymore. Old Shen had longed to reunite with his son for over 20 years. Now he finally knew where his son was, but they couldn't acknowledge him. Only he knew how he felt.
As for when they will be able to recognize each other, that's uncertain.
After Shen Qian's mother's sacrifice, a major internal investigation was conducted. It was later discovered that the news of receiving new weapon blueprints originated from the arsenal. However, the trail went cold and the source of the leak was never found.
The problems at the arsenal are of great importance.
Therefore, the relevant departments have never stopped investigating, although it has been conducted in secret.
It was precisely because of the secret investigation that Wan Xianghua was exposed.
Wan Xianghua was involved in the design and development of weapons. According to his confession, he handed over his blueprints to people at the arsenal, which once again pointed the finger at the arsenal.
After the comrade who went to the arsenal was killed again, the organization changed the direction of the investigation.
The investigation revealed that the deaths of these two comrades were accidental.
The first comrade sacrificed his life; he was devoured by wolves.
The second comrade died unexpectedly from electrocution on a rainy day.
The causes of death for both comrades were investigated, and both were determined to be accidental deaths.
If it weren't for the first comrade who reported the presence of spies within the arsenal, indicating he had discovered something amiss, everyone would have felt there was no need to investigate their deaths. There was nothing suspicious about it; it was clearly an accidental death.
Then Song Yan noticed something unusual about the wolf pack.
Therefore, the department in charge of this matter changed its strategy.
This time, ordinary staff members were sent to conduct the investigation.
They arranged for a local veteran to be assigned to work at the arsenal after his demobilization. This was different from the other two comrades who were transferred to the arsenal as cadres.
Because of its special nature, the arsenal required all personnel transferred in to undergo careful screening.
Even if Shen Qian were to get in, it would likely be as an ordinary staff member. He certainly wouldn't be qualified to approach the production workshop or management.
Therefore, obtaining information would be difficult for him. And completing the mission could take an unknown amount of time—one or two years, possibly even eight or ten. Moreover, the risks were immense. After all, two comrades had already sacrificed their lives.
Furthermore, Lao Shen had no idea how the mission would be carried out. Nor was it something he was supposed to know; it involved internal secrets, as this matter was not under his responsibility.
Old Shen felt incredibly choked up. Fortunately, this flower tea offered him some comfort.
The phone rang.
Secretary Fang picked up the phone. "Okay, let her in!"
Shen Changchuan sat up straight and vigorously wiped his face with both hands. "Is something the matter?"
"Ruomei is here! This child is quite sensible." Secretary Fang glanced at his watch; he could leave early today.
"Dad, Happy New Year." Shen Ruomei pushed the door open and came in. "Uncle Fang, Happy New Year."
“Ruomei, you’ve grown so tall. No wonder Uncle Fang feels old!” Secretary Fang said.
"Uncle Fang, how can you be old? You must stay young forever and work hard for your career," Shen Ruomei said playfully.
"Ruomei, you're sixteen this year, right?" Secretary Fang asked.
"Yes, Uncle Fang!" Shen Ruomei smiled, revealing a dimple on her face. That was the only thing she resembled her mother in. Her appearance and personality were nothing like her mother's.
Shen Ruomei's mother, Wen Shujuan, married Lao Shen because she valued his status.
Wen Shujuan must have had someone from Su Zhaohai to give her pointers before, because she didn't give herself away during the few meetings she had before her marriage.
After getting married, perhaps feeling that her position was secure, she became arrogant.
Old Shen was forced to marry her. If she had behaved herself, Old Shen would at least have given her some respect. But she thought marrying Old Shen would be a shortcut to success.
She was yelling at the housekeeper. Old Shen immediately arranged another job for her. There was no housekeeper left. She still wanted to use a housekeeper, and Old Shen agreed. However, he told her he wouldn't pay her a salary.
What could Wen Shujuan possibly do with her meager salary? She had no choice but to give up.
Wen Shujuan later used Lao Shen's connections to get her own brothers transferred or assigned jobs. After changing jobs, they abused Lao Shen's power in their new positions, acting like bullies.
