Jiang Yibai returned quickly, carrying a steaming breakfast bag. The aroma of the steamed buns and the rich flavor of the soy milk instantly dispelled the faint smell of disinfectant that lingered in the room.
When he entered, he saw Lin Xiyan still holding the kitten, sitting on the edge of the bed, occasionally stroking its head, his eyes a bit erratic, and the tips of its ears still had a lingering red. Hearing the door open, he looked up and saw Jiang Yibai. His eyes flickered, as if remembering that name, and he subconsciously tried to bury his face back in the cat's fur.
"Here, eat first." Jiang Yibai handed over the breakfast with a natural tone.
Lin Xiyan cradled the cat in her left hand, feeling somewhat bewildered. Jiang Yibai, seemingly having just realized something, took the kitten in his arms and laid it down on the still-warm side of the bed where he had slept. The kitten meowed, patted its feet on the bed, and found a comfortable spot to nestle down.
Only when her hands were empty did Lin Xiyan take the warm soy milk and buns. The warmth from her fingertips spread all the way to her heart.
Jiang Yibai also took a bun and nibbled on it, but he kept watching Lin Xiyan as he ate his food in small, slow bites. His cheeks puffed slightly as he chewed slowly, like a little hamster storing food. He seemed much more relaxed than when he first fed him breakfast.
He's starting to look a bit better. Jiang Yibai nodded secretly, but he's still too thin.
When both of them had almost finished eating, Jiang Yibai took a tissue and reached out naturally to wipe off the soy milk stains on the corner of Lin Xiyan's mouth.
Lin Xiyan's body stiffened slightly, but she didn't dodge, only her eyelashes trembled violently.
"Okay," Jiang Yibai threw away the tissue, stood up, and stretched out his hand towards him, palm facing up. His tone was as relaxed as if he was suggesting an outing. "The weather is nice today, I'll take you out for a walk."
Go out? Lin Xiyan was stunned for a moment, subconsciously looking at his arm still wrapped in gauze and his ankle that he dared not exert any force. How could he get out like this?
"It's okay, walk slowly, I'll support you." Jiang Yibai seemed to see through his concerns and extended his finger forward again, his eyes expectant, even with a bit of his usual, irresistible softness, "It's not good to stay indoors all the time. Get some sun and you'll recover faster."
His reason sounded impeccable, and his eyes were incredibly sincere. Lin Xiyan looked at his outstretched hand, then at the bright sunlight outside the window. After a moment's hesitation, she slowly placed her left hand on it.
As soon as my fingertips touched the warm palm, they were held firmly.
Jiang Yibai curled his lips, carefully helped him stand up, and put the thin coat he had prepared early in the morning on his shoulders: "It's cold in the morning, put it on."
Going out and downstairs. Jiang Yibai held him tightly with one hand, and with the other, he held his arm firmly, almost bearing most of his weight. His steps were very slow, matching Lin Xiyan's stumbling steps.
When they got downstairs, Lin Xiyan thought they would go to the school or the small park as usual, but Jiang Yibai took his hand and turned towards their car parked on the other side of the road.
"Where are we going?" Lin Xiyan asked with some confusion.
"Let's find a quiet place to walk around." Jiang Yibai opened the car door calmly, helped him sit in, and then squeezed into the back seat, still sitting close to him without letting go of his hand.
The car started. Lin Xiyan watched the increasingly unfamiliar street scene speeding backward outside the window, his doubts growing. This didn't seem like the road to a quiet park.
He turned his head and looked at Jiang Yibai next to him. Jiang Yibai was looking down at his phone, his profile smooth and unremarkable. But the fingertips of the hand holding his were unconsciously caressing the back of his hand, as if to comfort him, or as if... a little guilty?
"Where... are we going?" Lin Xiyan couldn't help but ask again, with a barely perceptible hint of uneasiness in his voice.
Jiang Yibai raised his head, looking at him with purple eyes, blinked, and suddenly moved closer, his forehead almost touching his. His voice was low and a little coquettish: "You'll know when you get there. I won't sell you out."
A warm breath brushed against her cheek, and Lin Xiyan's heart skipped a beat. She subconsciously shrank back, all her doubts blocked by this sudden closeness, and her cheeks began to heat up again.
The car finally stopped in front of a familiar white building.
Lin Xiyan looked at the big words "Municipal People's Hospital" outside the car window and was completely stunned.
"Come...what are you doing here?" He turned his head sharply to look at Jiang Yibai, his voice a little tense. Didn't you say you were going for a walk?
Jiang Yibai touched his nose, his eyes wandering for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure and held his hand tightly: "Since you're here, why not check it out. See how the wound is healing so I can rest assured."
"But it was just yesterday..." Lin Xiyan wanted to say that it was dealt with yesterday, but Jiang Yibai opened the car door without any explanation and helped him get out.
"Uncle Chen happens to be on duty today. Let him take another look. He's a professional." Jiang Yibai half coaxed and half forced his arm around his shoulders and walked into the hospital. "It will be quick. After the examination, I'll take you to eat something delicious, okay?"
Lin Xiyan belatedly realized that he'd been tricked again. The idea of going out for a stroll was clearly a premeditated follow-up. He looked at Jiang Yibai's self-assured expression, "I'm doing this for your own good," and felt a sense of helplessness, yet also a kind of inexplicable warmth.
Now that they were at the door, there seemed no point in struggling any further. He sighed and could only let Jiang Yibai lead him towards the elevator as if he knew the way.
Register, queue. Jiang Yibai held his hand tightly, their fingers intertwined. Lin Xiyan tried to pull it out several times, but was held even tighter. Occasionally, someone would cast a curious glance, but Jiang Yibai ignored them, concentrating on the call screen or asking if he was thirsty or tired.
Lin Xiyan was made uncomfortable by him, her palms were sweating, but she was strangely greedy for the close connection between their strength and warmth.
Finally, it was their turn. Walking into the consulting room, Dr. Chen saw them and smiled: "Are you here?"
Jiang Yibai pressed Lin Xiyan onto the examination chair and stood beside her like a family member, his expression as serious as if he was attending an important meeting.
Doctor Chen carefully removed the gauze on Lin Xiyan's arm, checked the healing of the wound, and looked at the bruise on her ankle.
"It's healing well," Dr. Chen nodded. "There's no sign of infection in the wound. Keep it clean and dry. There's no bone damage to the ankle, just soft tissue contusion. Just take care of it."
Jiang Yibai's tense shoulders relaxed visibly.
Then came the routine checkup: taking her temperature and blood pressure. Finally, Dr. Chen gestured for Lin Xiyan to stand on the height and weight scales by the wall.
Lin Xiyan hesitated for a moment, but finally stepped on it. The cold metal plate pressed against the soles of his feet.
The number jumped a few times and then stabilized.
Doctor Chen recorded the data and said casually, "Height 178cm, weight 45kg... Hmm?"
He paused, pushed up his glasses, and carefully looked at the number on the scale. Then he raised his head, his eyes fell on Lin Xiyan's face, and after a careful examination, he smiled and said to Jiang Yibai beside him, "Not bad, Xiaobai, you're doing well. You have a little more flesh on your face than the last time we saw you, and you look more energetic. You're 90 pounds now, keep it up."
90 pounds?
Lin Xiyan was stunned and subconsciously looked down at the number on the scale. 45.0 kg. It really was 90 jin.
Is he... heavier?
An indescribable feeling suddenly washed over him. It wasn't joy, nor was it sadness, but rather a vast, unfamiliar sense of bewilderment and... helplessness. It seemed as if he hadn't paid attention to his body in so long, so accustomed to being thin and lithe that even this tiny change seemed so abrupt and unreal.
Is there any flesh on your face?
He subconsciously raised his uninjured left hand and touched his cheek. It seemed... slightly... plumper than he remembered?
Jiang Yibai was standing nearby. Hearing the doctor's words, the corners of his mouth couldn't help but curl up. His purple eyes instantly seemed to be filled with stars, gleaming incredibly brightly. He resisted the urge to pick her up and spin her around right then and there. Instead, he walked forward and naturally extended his hand. Instead of touching her face, he gently nuzzled Lin Xiyan's earlobe with his knuckles.
"Did you hear that?" His voice was filled with uncontrollable pride and joy, like a cat that had successfully stolen some fish. "The doctor said it's healing well. I have to keep working hard. My goal is 95 catties!"
His fingertips were warm, and the touch of them brushing against his earlobe brought a subtle itch. Lin Xiyan raised his head and met Jiang Yibai's brilliant smiling eyes. The pure, unconcealed happiness in them was like sunshine, instantly dispelling the confusion and helplessness in his heart.
My heart seemed to be wrapped in warm water, beating slowly and heavily.
So... this is what it feels like to be carefully fed by someone and watch yourself get better little by little.
He looked at Jiang Yibai, who was smiling brightly, and at the small self in his eyes, who seemed no longer so shriveled. He pursed his lips very lightly.
An almost invisible, tiny curve quietly emerged at the corner of his lips.
