Chapter 998: Battle for the Gate

The torrential downpour washed over the streets and stone slabs, dissipating the pent-up heat of the day. On days when the cold wind blew sideways, the imperial capital presented two polarized scenes.

On the main roads, different armies engaged each other in a ceaseless cacophony of fighting and shooting. In some residential courtyards, however, total silence reigned. Many families had their doors tightly shut, holding their breath for fear of inviting unforeseen disaster. Even in the remote slums, the stillness was particularly intense. Many unemployed people from the lower classes watched nervously, like hyenas, searching for opportunities that might arise from the unrest.

In the military camp on the western outskirts of Tittanya, a sudden change is also taking place.

Logically speaking, there were about 50,000 troops stationed here, coordinating with another military camp in the east to jointly guard Titaneia. All of them were controlled by the Regent King's confidants. However, unexpectedly, the soldiers here had already begun to gather before receiving the Regent King's call.

"Everyone, put on your armor immediately and gather at the designated location!" The urgent sounds of horns and bells echoed in the camp, and the sound of running was everywhere.

The soldiers quickly ran out of their residences, thinking that this was another special training camp that some bastard had come up with. However, considering the generous treatment of the Guards Corps, they did not resist much.

The soldiers formed neat square formations in the pouring rain, with their heads held high and their chests puffed out. They were an elite regiment directly under the royal family, and they possessed a kind of pride and honor that ordinary people could hardly match.

Amidst the torrential rain, a burly man, built like steel, slowly ascended the platform. His overwhelming presence and power made the soldiers present hold their breath and watch in silence. This wasn't the familiar legion commander; his presence felt unfamiliar.

"Me! Darcy Gentlin." A loud voice rang out in the formation like thunder.

"I will be your new leader and commander." The voice seemed to carry unquestionable power, which made people feel afraid.

Darcy, the son of a commoner, later married into the House of Gentling, marrying their only legitimate daughter, Verin, and attaining the title of Earl. His exceptional performance on the battlefields of the Western Expedition made him an idol to many commoners and officers. His fame, promoted by the royal family, spread far and wide, making him a "military god" adored by countless members of the army.

Many middle and lower-level officers present were puzzled by such a sudden announcement, but as prestigious noble officers stood behind Darcy, expressing their approval and support, everyone had to suppress their doubts and remain silent.

Different from what the officers thought, when the ordinary soldiers heard that the "God of War" who was once widely known in the empire would lead them, they burst into enthusiastic cheers. The boiling sound almost evaporated the rain, and their eyes were particularly bright in the rain.

Darcy, the 'Pure Iron General', led a legion that was almost undefeated in past expeditions. If it weren't for the final encounter with that special war machine, it would be hard to say what the future would hold for the Empire and Cransia.

Who doesn't want to win? On the battlefield, victory is everything. There is nothing more exciting than this.

Looking at the cheers and enthusiastic voices below, the former 'God of War' still had an expression as cold as steel. He slowly raised his hand, and the shouts stopped instantly, and silence reigned.

"Everyone!"

"Follow me and attack immediately."

"The enemy is the rebels on the east side of the imperial capital. They are traitors to the empire and will be defeated by us!"

"The will of the empire!" A unanimous voice rang out in this command.

Then the soldiers took urgent action, with their elite cavalry setting off first, followed by the infantry wearing raincoats, and finally the rumbling chariots.

Among the elite cavalrymen who served as the vanguard, Darcy rode ahead. The air waves at his side broke through the hemispherical cover in the rain, making him particularly conspicuous in the rain curtain. Under his leadership, this cavalry also displayed a will and fighting spirit far beyond the past. Their steaming magic brought up bursts of white smoke, which continued to drift in the heavy rain.

The forces defending Titaneia are generally divided into three parts. The smallest and most elite of these are the Red Guards in the palace. They wear thick red-gold armor with rose reliefs on their chests and dark red cloaks on their backs. Their strength is mostly between Sequence 4 and 5, with some captains reaching Sequence 6.

The other part is the patrol knights in the city and the rotating garrison legions. Their composition is slightly more complex and each has its own duties, but the total number is about 60,000.

The final section consisted of two military camps outside the city, each with 60,000 soldiers, totaling 120,000. These were the elite legions within the army, regularly rotating with the legions stationed on the border and southern borders to maintain combat effectiveness.

Of course, this only represents the military strength of Titaneia. Near Titaneia, there are actually numerous fiefdoms loyal to the royal family, or strongholds of branches of the royal family. These cities are embedded like satellites along the roads and checkpoints leading to Titaneia. If their garrisons were mobilized, they could easily gather an army of approximately 400,000 to 600,000 men.

During this turmoil, the main attackers were the private armies of the nobles in the city. Although their numbers were smaller than those of the patrol knights and garrison legions, their equipment was much better. Moreover, these patrol knights and garrison legions were not a united force. Many of them had been infiltrated and turned against the city under the leadership of their commanders.

As the battle progressed, the scattered patrol knights and garrison troops in the city were defeated, and the main roads in Titaneia were gradually controlled by the private armies of the major nobles. Only the palace guards were left to protect the regent and the queen as they retreated step by step.
