I gently reached out and touched her face. "You can't follow me anymore. You've seen what happened today. If this continues, I'll definitely kill you."

I said, my voice trembling.

No, don't.

Shui Yanling seemed to tense up immediately and grabbed my hand. "I don't want to, I don't want to leave you, I'm your fiancée."

"Yanling, listen to me, I'm a plague god now. Anyone who gets involved with me will die."

I lowered my head, my expression pained.

Shui Yanling shook her head frantically, her eyes already brimming with tears, a sight that tugged at the heartstrings. "No, although I don't know what happened to you, I just want to stay by your side, and no one can stop me."

"no."

Looking at her expression, my heart almost melted, but I still said it firmly.

A girl who was betrothed since childhood and trusts me so much—if I were to put her in danger, what difference would I make from an animal?

We were incredibly lucky this time, encountering some divine intervention that saved us. But what about next time? And the time after that? Life doesn't offer that much luck.

"Do you know what happened to me? How many people died? This ghost inside me will kill everyone I'm connected with. Yanling, you're a good girl, you can't get involved with me, I'll destroy you."

I covered my face with my hands and said in a sullen voice.

"No matter what happens to you, I will always be with you. You are my fiancé, how can I abandon you?" Shui Yanling was almost in tears.

Chapter Twenty-Four: A Soft Heart

I resisted looking at her, afraid I would soften my heart. The situation was terrible, and the best way to protect her was to keep her away from me. I couldn't be so selfish.

Although I feel safe and secure with her, and I feel a warmth I haven't felt in a long time, I can't give her security. If something happens to her because of me, I will feel guilty and miserable for the rest of my life.

"Please, no, don't let me go. I'll find a way to protect myself. If you insist on letting me go, I'll die right here."

Suddenly, taking advantage of my inattention, Shui Yanling picked up the kitchen knife from the ground and held it to her neck.

"No, please don't do this."

I panicked; I didn't know what to do in this situation.

"No, I'll kill myself if you don't agree."

Shui Yanling was no longer the weak woman she had been at the beginning; her attitude was now incredibly tough. "It's just a ghost hand, right? Let's go find Grandpa; he'll definitely have a way to deal with it."

Yes, Grandpa was a famous geomancer. I looked at the broken jade pendant on my wrist. Since this jade pendant was related to the ghost hand, Grandpa might know something. If we could repair this jade pendant, we might be able to suppress the ghost hand.

Looking at the defiant Shui Yanling, I was at a loss for what to do. I gave a wry smile and shook my head.

"Put down the knife, and I'll agree!"

"Really?" Shui Yanling tilted her head and asked me cautiously.

"Really?" I looked at her playful expression and suddenly laughed, feeling somewhat helpless.

With a clang, Shui Yanling dropped the kitchen knife, letting it fall to the ground. Then she rushed over and hugged me tightly, burying her face in my chest and saying, "You're not allowed to lie to me!" I smiled and patted her head. "No, I won't!"

"Hmph, he just said he didn't want me anymore. Sure enough, men's words are deceitful!" Shui Yanling pouted and muttered to herself. Suddenly, she felt something was off, so she buried her head even deeper and stopped talking.

I was somewhat taken aback, and continued to stroke her head, unsure whether to cry or laugh.

I gently pushed her away, then placed my hands on her shoulders. "But there will be a lot of dangers in the future, aren't you scared?"

"I'm not afraid at all! I'm very strong, you know," she said, clenching her fist and solemnly waving it a few times in the air, making me tremble slightly.

Who could withstand this?!

"Alright, is dinner ready? Your fiancé is starving!" I said, feigning grievance.

"Oh, right, I'm still cooking!" Shui Yanling exclaimed and ran to the kitchen. She had only run halfway when she suddenly turned around and slowly walked back. She blinked at me, then slowly bent down and smiled sheepishly. She picked up the kitchen knife that she had forgotten on the spot and rushed into the kitchen without looking back.

Then came a scream. I covered my forehead and laughed helplessly. It seems that today's meal is not as wonderful as I imagined.

While she was cooking in the kitchen, I took out the jade pendant again, looked at the crack on it, paused for a moment as if I had made a decision, and then took out my phone and dialed my grandfather's number.

"Hey, Shuang'er, what's wrong?"

"Um, Grandpa, I might have to come back for a while, so I'm calling you in advance to let you know."

"What's wrong? Why do you suddenly want to come back?"

"Nothing, I just miss you a little."

So many things have happened recently that it's impossible to explain them over the phone.

So I didn't tell my grandfather directly. Another reason is that I really miss him, since I haven't seen him for a long time.

I have no memory of my parents at all. I don't know what they look like or even their names. My maternal grandfather raised me.
