Chapter Twenty-One: Beautiful Memories

“Pei Ke, let me tell you, one day I will grow very, very tall, and then you’ll be so angry.”

"What does being tall have to do with having short legs?" Pei Ke thought for a moment and realized that there was something wrong with what he had just said.

"You! Anyway, you'll grow taller, and your legs will get longer."

Seeing Su Xun's sullen face in front of him, Pei Ke found it even more amusing. For a moment, he wondered if he was a pervert who liked to make people angry. He wanted to tease him a bit more when suddenly two gunshots rang out.

"Bang, bang"

"Everyone, quickly squat down!" Class monitor Shu Lin shouted, then bent down and pulled down a boy behind him as well.

Everyone had been chatting and admiring the towering trees in the mountains, looking like they were on a picnic, when the sudden gunshot startled them all. One boy, however, remained frozen in place, blinking a few times, seemingly still not quite understanding. Before anyone could stand up, an instructor emerged from the tall grass beside them, startling everyone again. The instructor ignored them and simply took the boy who hadn't squatted down away.

In other words, their team had already lost one member. The relaxed and joking atmosphere from before vanished instantly, replaced by cautious and solemn expressions. The captain gave everyone a few more reminders before they set off again.

During the Long March, the Red Army faced numerous hardships and dangers, and had to constantly guard against enemy attacks and pursuit. They had indeed been too relaxed just now, and the sacrifice of one of their members had taught them a great lesson.

Along the way, they were no longer as carefree as before. They tried to speak as little as possible, paying attention to their surroundings, afraid that something unexpected might happen again.

Soon they arrived at the next location, a clearing overgrown with weeds where two mountains met, about fifty meters long. The team leader loudly read the words on the sign next to them.

"To cross the grassland, people need to lie down and crawl forward."

It rained a couple of days ago, so the grass was naturally damp. Even though the sun was shining brightly today and the surface grass had dried, the soil underneath was still wet. If you lay down, you'd definitely get your clothes dirty.

Song Lisha was the first to object. What a joke! Even though she was wearing camouflage clothing to protect herself from the dirt, the thought of being covered in mud made her incredibly uncomfortable, especially with Pei Ke present. How could she let him see her in such a disheveled state? Besides, she rarely had a chance to interact with Pei Ke alone at school, and now that they were finally in the same group, how could she let him see her make a fool of herself?

He immediately complained, "I don't want to roll in the mud."

The captain knew Song Lisha's temper. They sat close together, and he had often seen her bully her deskmate. This time, he could only bite the bullet and reason with her: "Lisha, this is our mission. If you don't come, none of us can leave."

"But what if my clothes get dirty? It'll look ugly."

"Song Lisha, don't drag us all down with your fuss. You might as well just drop out and be eliminated. Don't waste our time." One of the boys couldn't stand the girl's delicate manner and immediately lost his temper.

Seeing this scene, the team leader was momentarily at a loss. This boy who was throwing a tantrum was usually not someone to mess with in class. He quickly tugged at the boy's clothes, trying to calm him down. Song Lisha, suddenly scolded, immediately had tears welling up in her eyes. She didn't want her clothes to get dirty, but she also thought that if she didn't go, she would be considered a lapse in formation and taken away, which would mean she would have even less of a chance to be with Pei Ke. But Pei Ke didn't seem to care about her at all; he was still teasing Su Xun!

She was furious.

So she stomped her foot, lay down, and started moving forward, stretching her arms. Seeing that Song Lisha was angry and had left first, the team leader called for everyone to set off as well. Although she seemed still angry, at least she was willing to leave, so everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

Crossing the grassland was a simple task, but the wet mud beneath us quickly soiled our clothes, and the moisture seeped through, making them sticky and uncomfortable.

After everyone came out, they looked at each other, all of them dirty and some even had mud on their faces. They pointed at each other and laughed. The unpleasantness from before was completely swept away.

Su Xun finally regained her footing in this challenge. Although she was not very tall, she was very agile, so she was even faster than some of the boys when crawling forward.

Seeing Su Xun's smug expression again, Pei Ke became increasingly displeased. He walked over to Su Xun, raised his left hand to Su Xun's head, and with a gentle sweep, pulled a dry blade of grass stuck to his hair.

Pei Ke deliberately waved the grass in front of people, in a rather deliberately annoying manner.

Su Xun glanced at the person, feeling disdain for such childish behavior, and didn't bother to speak.

Unexpectedly, her appearance when braiding Chinese knots and climbing quickly was also quite childish.

Seeing that no one was paying attention to him, Pei Ke immediately lost interest and casually threw the blade of grass away.

The rest of the route was mainly uphill, with one section being particularly steep. It had been raining, and the ground beneath our feet wasn't very stable, so the group had to help each other to climb up.

We heard gunshots a few more times along the way. We learned our lesson the first time, and this time everyone reacted quickly after hearing the sound, and no one was eliminated.

At the top of the mountain, they encountered another challenging task: a large vertical net, two meters high, with wooden nails nailed to its edges. The group had to climb over the net, stepping through the mesh to get up, and then stepping through the mesh again to get down from the top.

It looked terrifying. In this level, we encountered other platoons, and some of them were too scared to climb and were eliminated.

Pei Ke suggested that the two boys go first, then the girls, with the boys on either side assisting them. This order was relatively reasonable, and no one had much of an objection.
