Chapter 3 Working

With too many questions unanswered, Jiang Nuan simply put them all aside and returned to her room to explore her own space.

She locked the door, entered the space, and went into the thatched hut she had never been to before.

The thatched hut was very simple, with only a table and two chairs inside. There was a book on the table, and a golden bow hung on the crumbling wall.

As I picked up the book, the three large characters "The Secret to Nourishing Life" came into view.

Jiang Nuan opened the book, quickly skimmed through it, and smiled, "Is the great author worried that I'll be bullied?"

"The Nourishing Body Technique" is a body-tempering exercise. By continuously absorbing energy from the space according to the operating route, the body can become better and better.

This change is comprehensive, including but not limited to increased strength and heightened senses. This kind of tempering that stimulates the body's potential allows the human body to continuously optimize itself.

It is not a cultivation technique, nor does it have any special moves, yet it can prolong life and reduce illness and disaster.

What a pleasant surprise!

Without hesitation, Jiang Nuan immediately began practicing the exercises described in the book.

After an unknown amount of time, Jiang Nuan opened her eyes.

"It feels so good. My whole body feels light and relaxed, as if a mountain has been lifted off my body."

The "Nourishing Body Technique" doesn't have such miraculous effects. The reason Jiang Nuan felt this way was because the original owner's body was severely depleted.

Excluding the six years after her husband's death, Jiang gave birth to eight children in fourteen years, leaving her body riddled with wounds. Of those children, only five survived.

Jiang Nuan stood up and found that she was covered in a thin layer of sweat. Upon closer inspection, she noticed that the sweat was slightly yellowish, which she guessed was due to toxins in her body.

If you take a closer sniff, there's a faint fishy odor.

Not wanting to pollute the space, Jiang Nuan immediately went outside, intending to boil water for a bath.

She had originally planned to boil the water herself, but when Wang saw this, she hurriedly asked the person to leave and quickly boiled a pot of water.

After rubbing herself three times, Jiang Nuan finally came out of the room. After washing herself, she felt like every pore on her body was breathing.

"That feels so good!" Jiang Nuan stretched and prepared to go check on the group of little kids.

She had a very good impression of the children and was happy to be close to them.

When Jiang Nuan found the person, the children were feeding the geese.

The big white goose was fierce, and Da Niu and Er Niu dared not go forward. Huang Xiao Si was scattering chaff out of a bowl, while Huang Xiao Wu stood guard with a bamboo pole.

"Xiao Si, give me the bowl, I'll feed him."

"No, Mother is not well and cannot work. She needs to rest and recuperate," Huang Xiaosi refused without hesitation.

"It's just feeding a goose, why can't I?" Jiang Nuan said speechlessly. "Sweetie, give me the bowl."

"No, Mother can't work," Huang Xiaosi insisted.

"You brat, give me the bowl," Jiang Nuan said, feigning anger and keeping a straight face.

She found this trick to be the most effective.

Sure enough, Huang Xiaosi handed over the bowl with a pitiful look on her face, as if she wanted to cry but dared not.

What happened now? Did I speak too harshly? Jiang Nuan reflected, realizing she shouldn't go so far next time.

After scattering a bowl of chaff, Jiang Nuan easily patted the dirt off her hands and turned to leave.

Everyone in the family, young and old, was working, but she was the only one idle. Jiang Nuan felt ashamed to eat.

Feeding the geese was just a small thing she did casually, but at least it was a good start, and she was very satisfied.

Jiang Nuan, caught up in her excitement, didn't notice that the four little ones were following behind her, their eyes red and swollen.

Upon entering the courtyard, two more men were present.

"Eldest brother, second brother, you two are back?" Jiang Nuan asked without hesitation.

"Mother, I'm back!" they both shouted in unison, clearly a common occurrence.

“Mother,” Huang Laoda walked up to Jiang Nuan, “Here’s your wages for today. It was supposed to be twelve coins, but I spent two coins to buy steamed buns.”

“Mother, there’s mine too,” Huang Lao Er said, not wanting to be left behind. “I earned seven coins today, and I’ll give them all to you, Mother.”

Taking the warm copper coins and looking at her two emaciated sons, Jiang Nuan suddenly felt that she could not bear the weight of the seventeen copper coins.

"Keep what you've earned yourselves; you don't need to give it to me."

"Mother, did I do something wrong?" Old Huang suddenly panicked. "Mother, don't treat me like this. I really didn't hide any money."

“Mother, I didn’t hide any money,” Huang Lao Er explained. “Business was bad today, and I didn’t make any money. Tomorrow, I’ll go further away and make sure I earn just as much as my older brother.”

Jiang Nuan was completely taken aback by how things unfolded, and was so surprised that she forgot to react.

Suddenly, Huang Xiaosi cried out in tears, "Big brother, second brother, Mother is dying, what should we do, Mother is dying!"

Am I going to die? How come I didn't know? I'm perfectly fine. Jiang Nuan couldn't understand why Huang Xiaosi would have such a bizarre idea.

Before he could even speak, Huang Xiaosi continued, "It's all my fault. I made Mother do the work. It's all because of me that Mother died."

"What?! You actually made Mother do chores?" Old Huang exclaimed in shock. Then, he quickly walked to Huang Xiaosi's side and slapped him. "How could you make Mother do chores? Are you trying to kill her?"

As he spoke, he wanted to hit him again.

After Jiang Nuan realized what was happening, she immediately protected Huang Xiaosi, "Boss, why are you hitting Xiaosi? He didn't do anything wrong."

“Mother,” Huang Laoda looked at Jiang Nuan with pain, “Xiao Si has killed you, and you still protect him? You can’t keep spoiling him. Mother doesn’t belong to him alone. What will your son do if I’m gone?”

"What nonsense are you talking about? I'm perfectly fine, I won't die," Jiang Nuan said quickly. "Don't curse me."

"Mother, don't worry, even if it means going bankrupt, we will give you a grand funeral. I'll go buy your burial clothes right now," Huang Lao Er said with a sorrowful expression.

"I won't die, I'm perfectly fine," Jiang Nuan explained through gritted teeth.

But it didn't work!

Everyone looked at her with grief, as if she were really about to die.

"What the hell is going on?" Jiang Nuan couldn't help but curse in her mind.

Jiang Nuan was distracted for a moment, and the two brothers, who were already preparing for her funeral, stepped out.

"You two, stop right there!" Jiang Nuan was really angry. "I'm perfectly fine now. Even if you both die, I won't. If anyone curses me again, I'll kick them to death."

After a pause, Jiang Nuan added, "Cursing me with your eyes won't work either. Don't look at me with those heartbroken eyes, it makes me want to punch someone."

Having just escaped death, she was especially averse to it!

After she vented her anger, everyone lowered their heads and no longer dared to look at Jiang Nuan with those strange eyes.

After bringing the person to the hall, Jiang Nuan began her interrogation, "Tell me, why do you think I'm going to die? Xiao Si, you tell me."

Wiping away his tears with his sleeve and hiccuping, Huang Xiaosi finally spoke, "Because Mom did chores."

"Because of my work?" Jiang Nuan was extremely frustrated. "Who told you that I would die if I worked?"

Damn it, she's an idiot. If she finds out who's spreading rumors, I'll slap her to death.

“Mother, you said it yourself,” Huang Laoda explained with red eyes, “You said you were weak and couldn’t work, otherwise you would get sick and die from overwork.”
