Chapter Fifteen: Mother

After evening self-study, a light rain was still falling outside the window. If it weren't for the school lights, it would probably be pitch black.

Day students and boarding students split into two groups and did not interact with each other.

Remembering the owner of the umbrella in her hand, Ying Qian jogged to catch up with Ren Yi: "Ren Yi! Here's your umbrella back!"

Ren Yi, holding his own umbrella, said nonchalantly, "No need to give me any."

"You don't want it anymore?"

"This wasn't my umbrella to begin with." Ren Yi found it somewhat amusing, spotting the rain-soaked boy in the crowd. "It belongs to Chen Wenzhi. Didn't he tell you?"

As soon as she finished speaking, Ying Qian ran towards the boy.

Chen Wenzhi only reacted when the rain suddenly stopped overhead.

Panting, Ying Qian took a while to catch her breath before asking, "Why didn't you tell me?"

"It's all because you didn't bring an umbrella," he said helplessly.

"I thanked the wrong person, okay!" Ying Qian sighed, feeling sorry for him while also complaining, "Do you know! I even treated Ren Yi to lunch!"

Chen Wenzhi took the umbrella handle, water dripping from his hair down his face.

"Won't you catch a cold when you go back?" Ying Qian stared at the raindrops on his forehead, and gently touched Chen Wenzhi's hand with the back of her hand; it was icy cold.

"If you catch a cold, won't you blame me?"

"No, don't blame me! Blame yourself for not telling me this umbrella was yours!"

Chen Wenzhi glanced at her and smiled slightly.

Her thin lips parted slightly, "I didn't say I blamed you."

In the crowded throng, Ying Qian and Chen Wenzhi were under the same umbrella, both with their faces filled with unspoken thoughts.

"Goodbye, Sister Ying Qian!" Shen Yun waved from the security guard's room at the door.

Ying Qian regained her senses and frowned, "What's wrong with you?"

"Wait for my brother." Shen Yun blushed inexplicably when he saw Ying Qian.

Ying Qian let out a "Hmm~" and waved her hand.

Not long after leaving the school, Ying Qian was feeling lost and confused.

Then I saw a familiar person in the thinning crowd, holding a pure black umbrella, wearing a black coat, black trousers, and black leather shoes, looking elegant and refined.

"Stop being so infatuated," Chen Wenzhi said. "I'll take you home."

Ying Qian smiled mischievously and said, "I guess I don't need you to take me~"

Chen Wenzhi hadn't reacted yet.

Ying Qian rushed out from under the umbrella's protection.

The man in the distance softened his serious expression and pulled her into his arms.

Chen Wenzhi frowned, his tongue pressed against his teeth, and a dark undercurrent surged in his eyes. He tightened his grip on the umbrella, turned around, and walked in the opposite direction.

Ying Qian wanted to say hello to him.

When I turned around, Chen Wenzhi was no longer in the crowd.

Meng Beiyan narrowed his eyes and asked, "Is that boy your classmate?"

"My new deskmate," Ying Qian said with a grin, telling Meng Beiyan how great he was. "Although my deskmate is a bit aloof and annoying, he's not completely heartless!"

"And there's more!" She couldn't wait to tell Meng Beiyan everything that had happened that day. "I met a brother and sister today! Their personalities are completely different!"

"There were two other girls, and they... well, they were very enthusiastic!"

Meng Beiyan listened attentively to each and every sharing session; it had been a long time since he had heard such a noisy chatter around him.

Along the way, apart from the sound of rain, there was only Ying Qian's chattering.

When Ying Qian got home and reached for her phone, she saw a small red dot appear next to a text message.

She clicked on it to take a look.

[Sister Yingqian, I really didn't expect to see you at No. 3 Middle School. It seems you've forgotten about me.]

...

Ying Qian's first reaction upon seeing this sentence was anger.

But where did she get the number?

Another "ding" sounded.

[We were elementary school classmates! I was so sad after you transferred schools, I'm so happy we can see each other again!]

Ying Qian suddenly remembered something, a smile playing on her lips. The name Shen Yun gradually surfaced in her memories from many years ago. No wonder it sounded so familiar…

She typed a message: [I'm also glad to see you again, but I'm sorry, I really can't remember you.]

No more messages are being sent to the dialog box.

After finishing her dinner and washing up, Ying Qian sat down at her desk to work on her homework.

Meng Beiyan sat on the edge of the bed and looked at her.

“Study hard, and I’ll try to pick you up from school as often as possible,” he said. “Most of the time, you’ll probably have to come home alone. Be careful on the way. You can walk with a classmate.”

He paused for a moment, then continued, "I bought a lot of dumplings and glutinous rice balls in the refrigerator, including scallion pancakes and eggs, etc. Eat these for breakfast. Don't skip breakfast; it's bad for your health..."

"The temperature will drop after this rain, and winter will gradually come. I bought you a lot of new clothes and put them in the closet. I don't know if you will like them. They are all new styles. I guess you will like them."

He seemed to have prepared everything, truly fulfilling his responsibilities as an older brother. The deep-seated resentment between his brows had completely dissipated from her.

Ying Qian knew that this house would no longer be empty and deserted. She could treat it as her home and wouldn't have to worry about being kicked out or feeling uncomfortable.

She continued writing without stopping, her voice involuntarily choked with emotion, "Thank you, brother."

"Don't thank me anymore." Meng Beiyan sighed, his voice low, and his eyes gradually welled up with tears. "I hope you treat me like family."

"Even family members should say thank you," she said.

"Yes." Meng Beiyan couldn't refute it. "Study hard and don't let your brother down."

Ying Qian couldn't help but say, "Brother, tell my mom not to worry about me."

Meng Beiyan froze for a moment, a hint of disdain and resentment flashing across his face, but it quickly dissipated. He agreed, "I will."
