Longevity for Two Thousand Years

Duanmu Ci, courtesy name Zigong, a native of the State of Wei in the late Spring and Autumn period, was a highly esteemed disciple of Confucius, who has lived for two thousand years.

He once ...

Chapter Seventy-Four: The Story of That Ginkgo Tree

rad**;

After a long chat, although the two had different feelings, Duanmu Ci and Wei Yue still remembered the main task of the day—to visit the University of Tokyo.

After having lunch at the Hilton Hotel restaurant, they set off for their destination.

Wei Yue originally didn't want to go. As a prominent figure in his class at Dongda University, he was sure many leaders and teachers would have a deep impression of him, which would be very detrimental to protecting his identity. However, this didn't bother Duanmu Ci at all.

Because he knows how to put on makeup.

Others master makeup to enhance their appearance, but Duanmu Ci mastered it to conceal it. Throughout his long life, there were times when he had to stay in one place for an extended period. During these times, Duanmu Ci had to carefully time his appearance to age slowly, just like those around him. This was one of the key reasons why he was able to safely survive for over two thousand years.

Duanmu Ci had Wei Yue sit in front of the mirror, holding some Kabo cosmetics that the waiter had just bought from Shinjuku. It was a long-established brand in Tokyo, founded in 1936, and enjoyed a high reputation. The brand's strength was one of the reasons why Duanmu Ci was able to confidently use these products to perform makeup on Wei Yue.

With a craft that's been around for thousands of years, Duanmu Ci's makeup skills are also quite concise. He simply outlines the eyebrows lightly with a pencil, then applies a touch of color to the key areas, and finally styles the hair. In this way, Wei Yue transforms from a handsome young man with elegant manners and fair skin into a mature man in his early thirties.

"That's amazing!" Wei Yue looked at herself in the mirror in surprise. "I never would have guessed that Duanmu Jun was such a makeup expert. I really didn't know that."

“The voice is off.” Duanmu Ci frowned. “Although your appearance has changed, your voice is still that of a young boy! It sounds very discordant. But after all, you haven’t received professional voice acting training, so it’s not your fault. When we get there, try to speak less. If you have to speak, try to make your voice sound a bit deeper.”

"It sounds like Duanmu-jun is really multi-talented!"

Duanmu Ci smiled silently. If he hadn't possessed some skills to conceal his secrets, he would have died countless times over. For example, during the Hongwu era of Zhu Yuanzhang in the Ming Dynasty, the court laws were strict. Duanmu Ci was a sixth-rank official, but he found he couldn't retire because Zhu Yuanzhang forbade resignation. So he could only use makeup to make himself appear older, and finally, in the first year of the Jianwen era after Zhu Yuanzhang's death, he successfully requested to retire.

Otherwise, once the secret of immortality is exposed, Duanmu Ci will be subjected to torture by the Embroidered Uniform Guard.

Therefore, Duanmu Ci used his own life experience to illustrate the true meaning of "it's never a bad thing to have many skills".

...

...

Since it was not a formal visit, the president of Dongda University did not appear in person. Instead, a vice president was sent to receive them and show Duanmu Ci and Wei Yue around the campus.

"It's a pity that you two have already had lunch. Otherwise, I would have liked to invite you to try our University of Tokyo cafeteria, so as to fulfill my kindness as your host," the vice-principal said with a smile.

"Oh? That's a pity. But is there anything special about your school's cafeteria?" Duanmu Ci asked deliberately. Generally speaking, for a normal school, the cafeteria is a place that's almost like a filthy mess. Even Haishan University wouldn't dare to ask a foreign school's visitors to eat in their cafeteria unless they were extremely confident. So Duanmu Ci followed this line of questioning, hoping to hit the vice-principal where it hurt.

"Mr. Duanmu's Japanese is really fluent, with a genuine Tokyo accent. He speaks even better than me, a Japanese from Osaka. That's quite rare!" The vice principal complimented him with a surprised tone, then added with some pride, "Our school's cafeteria was once rated as a five-star restaurant by Michelin. It's barely acceptable."

His face glowed with pride, yet he uttered humble words. Was it really appropriate to be so two-faced in front of everyone...? Duanmu Ci began to secretly assess the vice principal's competence.

"It's such a pity. It's April now and the cherry blossoms in Tokyo have all fallen. Otherwise, it would have been a very pleasant experience to walk along the cherry blossom avenue with you all in the spring. However, if you two have the opportunity to visit in the fall, you could take a walk along the ginkgo avenue, which would be quite a unique experience."

"I hope we can have such a connection again," Duanmu Ci replied in agreement. He had a brief interaction with the vice principal and found that the vice principal was indeed exceptional; at least his speech was very eloquent, even reminiscent of Wei Yue's tone.

“The vice-principal was my professor of language and culture when I was studying at Dongda University,” Wei Yue said softly, her head bowed.

No wonder... It's just that the professor who teaches the discipline course doesn't even have a Tokyo accent; he really wins by sheer ability.

Duanmu Ci and Wei Yue followed the vice principal on a tour of the academy. The school was very large, but Duanmu Ci looked around very carefully. There were no overly modern buildings, no towering skyscrapers, and no ostentatious signs; only some dignified buildings that exuded the style of 19th-century English architecture.

“That’s Naito Ginkgo.” The vice principal suddenly pointed to a ginkgo tree. “Professor Naito was an excellent teacher at our University of Tokyo. It’s a pity he retired in 2011.”

"When Professor Naito was giving his retirement speech in the large lecture hall, the earthquake struck. There were more than 200 students in the classroom at the time, and they all orderly left the classroom and gathered under the large ginkgo tree in the central open space of the Faculty of Engineering to continue listening to Professor Naito's farewell speech. Everyone formed circles under the ginkgo tree, and the students in the front row squatted down. Although there were still aftershocks, no one made a sound, just to give the professor one last platform to continue his brief farewell speech."
