Ye Wan had just graduated from culinary school and was eagerly preparing to open her own small restaurant. However, before her business license even arrived, she stumbled into a peculiar magical wo...
Chapter 7: Night Watch Guild Fried Chicken with Onion Cheese and Ranch Sauce
The next day, Ye Wan got up early and went to the nearby market to shop. She bought a lot of parsley, dill, avocado and lime, and went to the butcher shop to buy some chicken legs.
I happened to run into Dorothy who was at the market buying rye bread. She was still very serious, wearing a black robe with a stand-up collar that covered her from neck to toe, and her gray hair was combed meticulously. "I heard that a werewolf came to Honey Lane yesterday?"
Ye Wan felt a little ashamed: "I'm sorry, it's because I wrote a job announcement at the main city recruitment office that the wolf found this place. It's all my fault."
Dorothy glanced at Ye Wan's red eyes and said, "There's nothing to be sorry about. This isn't your fault. Back then, my job posting attracted a group of goblins. They destroyed my carefully maintained yard and nearly tore off the foundation of my house. My neighbors didn't blame me, though."
Ye Wan looked up at her in surprise.
Dorothy took out a bag of orange jelly candies from her bag and stuffed it into Ye Wan's bamboo basket. "Okay, I have to go. I have to buy the fragrant lilies I want before the morning market closes."
After saying that, she turned and walked away quickly.
Muffin quickly got into the basket to look for the orange candies. Its big head was facing downwards, with only its two short legs kicking around outside.
Ye Wan's mood suddenly improved.
She returned home and started preparing lunch. She marinated the chicken legs with black pepper and other seasonings. To achieve the crispy effect of fried chicken, she also needed to mix a layer of cornstarch paste.
Ye Wan dipped the bamboo chopsticks into the frying pan. A lot of oil beads appeared on the tip of the chopsticks, indicating that the pan temperature was about right. She put the chicken legs covered with batter into the frying pan. Considering that the kingdom had entered the early summer, Ye Wan also mixed some ranch sauce and lime sauce. The ranch sauce was mayonnaise with sour cream to relieve greasiness, and then sprinkled with fresh chopped parsley and dill, and finally seasoned with some black pepper and garlic powder.
For the lime sauce, squeeze the avocado into the lime juice and put it into the blender with Greek yogurt. Don't forget to add some olive oil and cilantro leaves. This sauce is a refreshing green color and is very suitable for eating with fried chicken in the summer.
After preparing the two sauces, the wind chimes hanging on the gate rang.
Ye Wan hurried out of the kitchen: "Welcome!"
The visitor was Katya from next door, bringing me rose jam. "Annie from the farm outside the city gave me roses, and I made a lot of jam. I heard a werewolf came to your place yesterday. Are you okay?"
The pair of rough yet warm hands touched Ye Wan's face, making Ye Wan feel very warm: "I'm fine, mother-in-law, the werewolf ran away directly and didn't hurt me."
She pulled Grandma Katya to sit on the chair and said, "We have fried chicken today, you can try it later."
Soon two people from the guards came in. Justin blushed with heat: "It's so hot today."
Ye Wan asked, "What do you want to eat today? It's all on the menu. I recommend fried chicken."
"Anyway, let's have a draft beer first!" said Justin.
The golden and crispy fried chicken legs are stacked on the plate, and the aroma of fat quickly spreads. The fried chicken shell is extremely crispy and flaky, with a honey-colored luster. Next to it is a small dish of ranch sauce and lime sauce. The mint green sauce looks refreshing.
Grandma Katya praised: "This looks delicious."
Justin stretched his head to look at the fried chicken in front of Katya's grandmother, like a giraffe, and then he quickly added: "The fried chicken looks good, I want one too!"
Soon his portion of fried chicken and beer arrived.
The bubbles of draft beer kept rising, and Justin drank it in one gulp. He then took a piece of fried chicken and took a bite. The crispy shell that looked like scales made a crackling sound as he chewed, and the hot gravy immediately gushed out.
"It's so hot!" Justin tossed the chicken wings with his left and right hands, blew on them twice, and continued to bite. The meat inside was tender and flavorful enough from being marinated with chili and honey.
Ye Wan reminded: "You can dip it in some lime sauce."
Justin nodded and dipped the chicken wings in the sauce. The tiny particles of lime peel in the sauce stained the chicken wings, and he could smell a sour and sweet fragrance, like a freshly cut lemon. He took a bite of the fried chicken wrapped in lime sauce, and the rich meaty aroma was immediately neutralized by the sour and sweet lime. The greasy feeling caused by frying completely disappeared, leaving only a fresh citrus flavor.
Ye Wan was very happy when he saw him finish a whole bowl of fried chicken.
It happened that Grandma Katya had also finished lunch. Ye Wan sent her out the door and ran into two people wearing long black cloaks. Their faces were hidden in the hoods and they were wearing high leather boots.
It seemed quite out of place in the sunny Cartmel weather and warm breeze.
Ye Wan looked at them and asked cautiously, "Death Clan?"
"There's no such race!" The shorter black-hatted man on the left angrily lifted his hood, revealing a head of rust-red hair. "We are the Night's Watch."
After Emma's brief introduction yesterday, Ye Wan learned about the Night Watch Association. He heard that during wartime, the organization was responsible for patrolling, catching undercover agents and guarding the city gates, while in peacetime, it was responsible for the safety of the city at night.
Ye Wan invited them into the restaurant: "It's too hot outside, why don't you come in and talk?"
Rusty Red wanted to refuse, but the tall man next to him said, "Thank you for the invitation."
This is a mature and pleasant female voice.
Justin seemed unhappy when he saw them and muttered a few words. Ye Wan listened as if he was talking about "noble night watchman" and seemed to be mocking them.
Rust Red retorted, "Guards who are wasting taxpayers' money."
Justin wanted to lose his temper but was persuaded by his companions; and Rusty Red was also severely reprimanded by his companions.
Ye Wan brought them two glasses of iced lemonade.
Rusty Red waved his hand and said no, but his companion politely thanked him, took a sip, and exclaimed in surprise, "God bless you, this is the most delicious lemonade I've ever had!"
Ye Wan specifically picked the pulp of perfumed lemons, which she filtered and then crushed with water and sugar. The lemon flavor was strong, and combined with the sweet fructose, it tasted as refreshing as soaking in a citrus pool.
Condensation formed on the ice in the glass, making a clinking sound. The woman finally took off the hood of her black robe, revealing a beautiful face. She also had red hair, curled into big waves, like a French beauty. "This lemonade is amazing! I feel like all the summer heat has been lifted!"
She continued, "Don't worry little girl, my name is Hannah and this guy next to me is Red. We just want to find out about what happened with the werewolves last night."
The fierce-looking Red next to her saw her drink up the lemon juice in one breath and seemed to want to reach out for it as well, which was noticed by Ye Wan.
She picked up the glass of lemonade and said, "I'm sorry you don't like it. I specially picked the most fragrant scented lemon." Then she drank the water herself.
Red looked even angrier.
After drinking the water, Ye Wan told the whole story of what had happened to him, including how he went to the main city’s recruitment office to post a job notice and a werewolf named Ah Hui came to apply for the job.
Red took out his quill and parchment and wrote down the details. Hannah nodded. "So that's how it is. After we received the news yesterday, we rode on the Gryphon and searched for half a day. It seems that the werewolf ran into the forest."
After Red finished writing, he put the parchment away and looked around the restaurant again: "Is it really that simple? This restaurant has caused a lot of trouble before."
Ye Wan was a little angry: "What do you mean? Speak clearly!"
Hannah stopped him and explained good-naturedly, "Before we came here, we looked through the archives of the Old Oak Tavern and found that this inn had a really interesting story over thirty years ago."
Red continued, "For example, there used to be a vampire banquet here. You know, although there's no law prohibiting vampires from entering the city... but by the goddess of wisdom! Their sharp teeth and strange legends would scare the citizens."
It sounded like something Ye Yu would do, inviting a bunch of vampires to a party at the restaurant. However, Ye Wan was curious: "If we hold a party here, what will the vampires eat?"
Hannah thought about it and found that she couldn't remember much, so she had to ask Red who was standing beside her. Red said reluctantly: "According to the investigation of our predecessors, they ate something called Maoxuewang and duck blood vermicelli soup in the restaurant, which is very likely a virus."
You are the virus, your whole family is a virus. Ye Wan has no good impression of this person.
The two got the information they wanted in the restaurant and stood up to leave. Hannah was still thinking about the lemonade: "It's really delicious, and I seem to smell the aroma of fried chicken. If I didn't have work..."
"Welcome to visit us next time, beautiful Ms. Hannah." Ye Wan said politely.
"Oh, little girl with an oriental face, you are so cute!" Hannah said, and followed Rhett.
The restaurant finally quieted down.
Now Justin could finally complain loudly: "Finally gone, those self-proclaimed noble night watchmen."
Orion expressed his cordial condolences to Ye Wan: "Don't worry, this is how recruitment works. I remember a barbecue restaurant hiring an apprentice."
The most famous dish of that barbecue shop is cumin roasted rabbit meat. The apprentice is a magical rabbit from the canyon. He disguised himself as a human and entered the city. He used his big ears to give the owner a series of slaps.
From then on, the store never sold any meat products again.
Ye Wan found it funny and felt comforted, "Thank you, Orion."
As he was speaking, the wind chimes hanging on the door began to ring again.
Ye Wan subconsciously looked at the door.
A young man with a harp on his back walked in. He had golden curly hair, sea-blue eyes, and a bright smile that revealed a row of neat white teeth. He looked good, but his clothes were a little weird: his hair was oiled into a crew cut, like a golden electric drill standing on his forehead, and he wore a blue and white polka-dot suit, colorful socks, and red high heels.
Ye Wan was just about to ask him what he wanted to eat when the man took out a stick from behind and started singing: "Beautiful girl~"
Ye Wan: “?”
His harp looked expensive, but the music it played was terrible: "I heard you were hiring~~"
"I'm a bard~Ah~ I'll make the diners feel better~Ah~"
Justin and Orion had wanted to sit for a while, but when they heard the music, they quickly put the money on the table and ran away.
Pancake covered his ears. Ye Wan wanted to do the same but was afraid that the other party would say he was impolite, so he had to hold back.
The poet is completely lost in his own world, and he ends with a Shakespearean sonnet-style conclusion.
Then he took out a handful of rose petals from his arms and scattered them into the air. The petals fell on Ye Wan's head, on the greasy plates left by the diners, and on the floor.
He bowed to Ye Wan like a gentleman and asked, "How is it?"
Ye Wan shook his head a few times to shake off the petals.
"I don't think it's very good." She thought to herself.
