Chapter 19 Laying the Foundation

At dawn, the gatekeepers of the Black Stone tribe pried open the stone blocking the entrance to the cave.

The cave was already crowded with members of the Giant Deer tribe, whom Xu Que had selected beforehand to help build livestock pens.

"You guys are here really early!" Xu Que yawned, counted the number of people, and found that there were dozens of extra people.

Xu Que yawned again: "So what if there are more? More people means more strength! Without a doubt, these extra dozens of people must have sneaked out without the knowledge of the Julu tribe's elders and chief."

"Now that everyone is here, let's get started!" Xu Que said, waving his hand. Ha Gang then distributed the small trees, which were as thick as shovel handles and had branches and leaves attached, to each member of the Giant Deer tribe.

"In a moment, I will set fire to the weeds in front of the cave entrance. You will each take your fire extinguishing tools and guard every stronghold that could potentially start a wildfire. If any flames come with the wind, you will use the small trees in your hands to put them out! Can everyone understand what I am saying?" Xu Que was worried that the members of the Giant Deer tribe had not understood him, so he had Hou translate it for them again in the pure tribal language.

Ha Gang casually picked up a fire extinguisher with branches and leaves attached and demonstrated it to the members of the Julu tribe on the spot.

The members of the Julu tribe had only been in contact with Xu Que for a short time, so they naturally had difficulty understanding what he was saying. However, after some gesturing, they could generally grasp the gist of his meaning.

Hou repeated the translation to them again, and Ha Gang demonstrated it on the spot. After these three times, even a donkey could probably understand it!

Xu Que assigned two to three tribesmen armed with firefighting tools to each stronghold where a wildfire could potentially break out. The remaining unemployed personnel could be replaced as needed.

After setting everything up, he took out a windproof, non-refillable lighter and lit the weeds in front of the Black Stone Tribe cave.

Each tribe member assigned a task took it seriously while standing at the outpost.

A few minutes later, Xu Que led everyone to use their fire extinguishers as brooms, carefully cleaning up the ashes.

After clearing away the weeds and ashes, Xu Que picked up a stone resembling an ancient rammed earth stone used for building city walls and began pounding it on the ground. This would make the ground more compact!

Ha Gang felt that Xu Que's method was too troublesome and inefficient, so he directly led the primitive people to use the meat tampers they carried with them—the soles of their feet—to stomp on the ground.

They lined up in perfect unison, with each person in the back putting their hands on the shoulders of the person in front, and shouting "Hey hey haha" to a lively rhythm as they pounded the ground.

Xu Que looked down at their thick, savage feet and had to admit that this method of tamping the ground was indeed fast and effective!

With a bag of animal hide food slung over his shoulder, Hou sat on a large rock outside the cave, sketching on the spot, holding a thin stone in one hand and a twig pen in the other.

Watching the tribe members tamp the ground using this traditional and ancient method, Xu Que felt that he couldn't help much, so he went over to watch her draw.

"Why did you go outside to paint today?" Xu Que climbed onto the big rock, sat down next to Hou, and glanced at the painting on her rock.

Hou looked up and gave Xu Que a silly smile: "I panic when I can't see you! Panicking affects my drawing performance!"

"Look for yourself, this is a drawing I made alone in the cave when you and Ha Gang went deep into the primeval forest to find the saber-toothed tiger!" Hou said, putting down the paintbrush and stone piece in his hand, taking out a badly drawn stone from the animal skin food bag, and handing it to Xu Que.

Xu Que took the stone tablet and examined it closely: "Isn't this drawn quite well? I don't see anything wrong with it. Aren't the lines you drew all crooked and twisted?"

He glared angrily at Xu Que, took the thin stone slab from his hand again, and pointed out the flaws: "Look! The lines here are obviously not straight because my hand was shaking! It's all because I was in a bad mood! I was wiping away tears while I was drawing!"

Upon hearing Hou's words, Xu Que put on an expression as if the sky had fallen, and with a sudden rise in his voice, he exclaimed in surprise, "Sigh!" He then pulled her into his arms to comfort her, "Look how wronged I am! I even secretly wiped away tears while I wasn't around!"

"Hmm!" Hou nodded, leaning against Xu Que's chest, and began her endless chatter.

"It's all your fault! Why didn't you take me with you when you went deep into the primeval forest! Now look what happened, we've wasted a whole rock!" Hou stopped drawing altogether and started chatting shamelessly with Xu Que.

Ha Gang carried a large iron pot to a nearby river, filled it with water, and then carried it back by himself.

The chief and other tribal members put the cut beef into pieces into a large iron pot, sprinkled it with various seasonings that Xu Que had found in the primeval forest, covered the pot, and started cooking it over a fire.

Ha Gang carried the heavy pole he had brought back from the primeval forest back and, without using any tools, tore it into pieces of wood just the right size to fit into the stove opening.

The other members of the Flower Tribe were stunned by Hagang's incredible feat of chopping firewood with his bare hands: "It seems like you can chop anything in your hands!"

Just as the aroma of meat wafted intermittently from the large iron pot, the stomachs of the primitive people lining up and pounding the ground with the soles of their feet began to rumble.

Ha Gang, imitating Xu Que's old method of cooking meat, found some twigs on the ground and poked them vigorously at the meat chunks. After haphazardly poking them, he didn't know what to do next! He hadn't grasped the underlying principles; he was simply copying what Xu Que did.

Xu Que didn't seem to tell Ha Gang that poking the meat chunks like this was mainly to test by feel whether the meat was cooked through inside.

Xu Que wrinkled his nose and snorted, then shouted from afar, looking at the pot of boiling meat, "The meat's cooked! You can take it out now!"

The members of the Julu tribe, who were tamping the ground, smelled the aroma of meat wafting over and came to the pot one by one to wait for the meat to be eaten.

Ha Gang lifted the pot lid and put it on the ground, then stretched out one of his hands and scooped the meat directly out of the boiling water.

When the Julu tribe members saw Hagang doing this, they followed suit one by one.

While everyone else had eaten several ounces of meat, Xu Que was still sitting on that big rock with Hou in his arms, chatting as if dating could fill their stomachs!

After everyone had finished eating, Xu Que and Hou swayed over to the pot, scooped up two pieces of meat, and returned to the big rock where they had been sitting to eat!

When everyone had eaten and drunk their fill and lay down to rest, Ha Gang picked up the big pot and went to a nearby river to cook it!

In the Blackrock tribe, only Hagang can easily lift this pot, so the task of washing the pot always falls to him!
