Chapter 18 High School Female Teacher in the 1980s

Although it was getting dark later and later, Xu Keke was afraid that it would be inconvenient if it was too late, so as soon as she got home from get off work, she went straight to the Fang family's house without eating.

Seeing Xu Keke come to find him, Fang San glanced at his grandfather with a smug look.

"Third Brother, has Brother Fan replied to your letter yet?"

Seeing that Old Master Fang had turned and gone into the inner room, looking as if he was angry, Xu Keke glanced at the swaying curtain on the door of the Fang family's inner room with a puzzled look.

“My grandpa is angry with me, it’s nothing,” Fang San said, leading Xu Keke inside to sit down. “Wait a minute, I’ll call Brother Fan and ask him.”

The phone number for Fang San's family was assigned to Old Master Fang by the organization according to rank, and it was located in Old Master Fang's room. Fang San went in and made a call to Fan Tao.

Xu Keke couldn't hear what the other person was saying, but she could hear Fang San's replies from the inner room: "Hmm! Hmm! Okay!"

Not long after, Fang San lifted the curtain and came out from the inner room. "It's quite a coincidence. Brother Fan said he was just about to call me. Tomorrow is Sunday, and he made an appointment with Xiao Da's mother, Feng Meijun, to go see the courtyard tomorrow morning. But he said that from what he said, it seemed that Xiao Da's mother didn't know that someone lived in the courtyard. He was afraid that something else might be going on inside, so he didn't say anything."

Xu Keke nodded, indicating that she understood. "Third Brother, if the asking price for that courtyard is too high, don't rent it. I didn't actually intend for you to rent it, I..."

Fang San raised his hand to stop her, "Alright, I know what I'm doing. Don't worry, I won't spend a lot of money to rent a courtyard. I'm not stupid."

Just then, Old Master Fang came out of the house. Hearing what he said, he glanced at him, his eyes clearly saying, "If you're not stupid, then who is?"

"Du family girl, why don't you eat at home tonight? Your third brother's noodles with soybean paste are still edible. Why don't you have some with us? It'll just be the two of us eating tonight. I don't like looking at him; he looks so silly."

Xu Keke was amused by Grandpa Fang. She owed the Fang family a lot of favors, so she didn't stand on ceremony and stayed to join them for a meal.

After dinner, Xu Keke watched TV with Grandpa Fang for a while. Before leaving, she made an appointment with Fang San to meet downstairs early the next morning.

"Master, why did you keep her here for dinner? Couldn't you have told me to keep her at a distance?" After everyone left, Fang San cautiously asked his master.

"You're so naive, you don't believe me. How is this the same as you waiting outside like an idiot? People come in openly to talk to you, but if they really had something on their mind, they would be sneaking around. This proves that the child doesn't have those feelings for you. Since they're already here, they can stay a little longer, just a little longer." Old Master Fang shook his head, sighed, and uttered two words, "Foolish."

After hearing his grandfather's words, Fang San didn't know whether to be happy or unhappy.

The next day, Xu Keke and Fang San arrived earlier than Feng Meijun, and they parked their car outside the front store.

Before entering Fan Tao's house, Xu Keke saw Li Yumei carrying a spittoon into the public toilet from afar.

The two waited at Fan Tao's house for a while before Feng Meijun arrived. However, they heard her voice before they saw her, because a commotion suddenly broke out in the neighboring yard.

"Who are you? Who gave you permission to stay in our house?"

After a while of commotion outside, Fan Tao's lover led in a woman with short, straight hair, wearing a gray suit and chunky high heels, who appeared to be around fifty years old.

Fan Tao's wife winked at him, "Aunt Feng is coming over to make a phone call."

Feng Meijun was still angry. She glanced at the people in the room, grunted, and then followed Fan Tao's wife into the inner room.

Because the window of Fan Tao's house was right at the end of this street, they enlarged the opening and opened a small shop. Their shop had a public telephone. But Fan Tao's wife wouldn't let Feng Meijun make the call while standing on the street. So she invited Feng Meijun into the inner room.

The three of them were sitting outside when they heard Feng Meijun's voice coming from inside.

"Tell your sister to answer the phone... Did you let anyone stay in our yard?... Who do you think they are?... You brat, how dare you! Who told you to...?"

Hearing the phone hang up inside, Feng Meijun stormed out, lifting the curtain in a huff. Fan Tao's wife, who had been inside with him, had clearly overheard what was being said.

“Aunt Feng, please sit down for a while. Wait until Yu Jie arrives before you go out. It’s not worth arguing with them given your status.”

Feng Meijun was clearly furious. She plopped down on the Fan family's sofa. Ignoring the presence of outsiders, she grabbed Fan Tao's wife and began complaining.

"How can this child be so bold? She broke up with her boyfriend and didn't even tell her family. What's wrong with the guy I suggested she find? Not only does she work at the same hospital, but both her parents are doctors. They own a house, and her mother even told me last time that the dowry and everything else is up to our family. And yet, she's so..."

Seeing the teacup Fan Tao offered, Feng Meijun shook her head irritably and didn't take it. She was still grumbling under her breath.

"She kept complaining about how badly he looked, saying he had too little hair and wasn't presentable. She used to grumble about it at home, and I always thought she was just saying it casually. But look at her now, marrying off this family who don't even have a house! She secretly took the keys to our house and let them live in our yard. Am I marrying off my daughter or marrying off their whole family? What kind of mess is this?!"

Fan Tao's wife had delicate features and looked like a charming and capable woman. She took the teacup from Fan Tao's hand and smiled as she offered him some advice.

"Please don't be angry. Let's ask Yujie when she gets here. It's hard to explain over the phone. We've watched Yujie grow up since she was little. She's always been smart and sensible. She even got into medical school. You know, where else in our area can you find such a promising child? Don't worry unnecessarily. Let's talk about it when Yujie gets here."
