To recover his memory and life, Xu Keke enters various eras to start a counterattack journey to demand justice for the resentful side characters of era novels.
Rehabilitation is non-existent,...
Xu Keke walked through the fence, sighed, resignedly turned around, parted the branches, and pulled Yun Sheng out.
From the very first day she arrived, she had already planned her escape route.
She didn't leave, not because she was attached to this place, but because someone was constantly provoking her, and she wanted to get rid of the original owner's emotions. She knew that as long as she left, some things would always remain.
Humiliation, anger, and resentment. She could only make herself feel better by resolving certain issues.
Huifang startled her awake. If she continued to wallow in these thoughts, she would never escape. Because Ding Tou was dead, then there was Chen Hui, and if Chen Hui died, there would be another. She couldn't kill them all.
This is, after all, a game world. She needs to jump to another map. Only then can it end.
The price for this realization was this little boy. He seemed to know he would be abandoned, and he kept following her. When she was about to escape from the dormitory, she turned around and saw him following behind her.
There was a reason he was able to escape. The security here is actually quite lax. After all, this place only looks like a prison.
A breeze blew through the night, and rows of bungalows lined both sides of the road.
In the original owner's memories, her adoptive parents lived the farthest away, in a village below. Her wet nurse lived in the city, in a shantytown near the stream. The Chen family's shop, on the other hand, was in the best location in the city, closest to the factory.
At this point in the war, due to the victory of one side, the two sides faced each other across the river and entered a stalemate phase, with each side storing up its own supplies.
Despite the undercurrents of unrest, the surface remained calm. The people began to live and work in peace and contentment once again.
The Chen family's shop had already reopened long ago. They needed to make money; otherwise, all the money they'd invested and all the connections they'd built would have been for nothing.
The Chen family runs a trading company, transporting goods from all over the country. To make such a large business, they must have connections at higher levels. So, when the child was lost initially, it could be considered an accident. But the fact that they couldn't find him afterwards suggests some degree of human error.
Xu Keke led Yun Sheng to the door of the shop. It was already dawn.
Newspaper boys outside the newspaper office on the street started stuffing newspapers into their bags. When they saw the two of them walking over, some of them turned away with disgust, as if looking at them would bring them bad luck.
Some children whistled at them. They were just being provocative, like teasing, and had no intention of actually coming over.
Yun Sheng was a little scared, and Xu Ke probably felt that her clothes were being pulled down tighter.
Xu Keke held his hand; his fingers were thin and frail, and icy cold. Xu Keke's own hands weren't big either. She could only hold his, trying to warm them, but she couldn't quite wrap them around his.
The Chen family's shop was not open. The two of them sat down against the shop's door panel. The ground in the city was surprisingly cold in the early morning. The chill emanating from the stone slabs made them both shiver.
More and more pedestrians appeared on the street, and white smoke began to rise from the steamed bun shop next door. Soon after, a fragrant aroma wafted out. Then the shop door opened. The rather burly owner casually set up long benches and tables outside.
A short while later, he came out with a bunch of garlic, tearing off pieces as he casually tossed a few onto the table. The two shops were very close, separated only by a wall.
Xu Keke heard Yun Sheng make a clear swallowing sound, followed by her own. The aroma of the steamed buns was simply too tempting.
But she had no money. She put the silver bracelet that Huifang had given her under Suying's pillow.
The owner of the steamed bun shop glanced at them, then turned and went inside. When he came out again, he couldn't help but say, "Their staff will be here soon, and they'll open the shop. Be careful the owner doesn't beat you up."
"No, I'm their boss's eldest daughter who was abandoned here. They won't hit me," Xu Keke said directly.
She bet that the signboard was quite old, clearly indicating a long-established business. They'd definitely been operating there for more than just a year or two.
She bet that the boss was a worrier, otherwise he wouldn't have kindly reminded them.
Sure enough, the steamed bun shop owner paused for a moment. Hesitantly, he asked, "Are you Mr. Chen's eldest daughter?"
Xu Keke nodded, "My name is Huihui, and my full name is Chen Minghui."
"Wife!" The boss exclaimed excitedly and rushed inside.
Yun Sheng looked at her blankly, seemingly not understanding what she meant. He didn't ask, but just stared at her.
Xu Keke couldn't explain much to him, so she tried to soothe him by patting his head. He lowered his eyes and seemed to return to his quiet state.
A somewhat overweight woman ran out, and with her movements, white powder filled the air. She was so heavy that she inevitably bumped into the table, leaving a white stain on her clothes.
"You really are Huihui," the proprietress said warmly, parting her hair and cupping her face. Xu Keke could feel the powder falling onto her face.
"That's Huihui! You look just like your mother. Big eyes, small nose, and mouth."
She saw Yun Sheng and asked hesitantly, "Is this your younger brother?"
He immediately realized that his thinking was wrong. "What nonsense am I talking about? Your servants said that your brother has already started school."
Xu Keke watched with some concern as Yun Sheng ate his second steamed bun. This was the result of her asking the proprietress to smear flour on her face, which she had refrained from wiping off earlier.
The owners of the steamed bun shop were kind people. Upon hearing that Xu Keke was coming, they didn't even eat; without saying a word, they gave the two of them steamed buns and hot porridge.
At Xu Keke's insistence, Yun Sheng reluctantly drank two mouthfuls of porridge before starting to eat the steamed buns in large bites. He had never eaten meat in his entire life.
