Chapter 119 Getting on the Train

Three days later.

At eight o'clock in the morning, Su Yan cooked the third day's medicinal meal for Grandma Tao and delivered it to her. She also instructed Tao Yue to start recording Grandma Tao's sleep patterns from tomorrow night before packing her luggage and rushing to catch the train.

After watching her grandmother finish the medicinal meal, Tao Yue asked curiously, "Grandma, do you think the medicinal meal you've been eating these past few days has been effective?"

Grandma Tao wiped her mouth clean before replying, "I only got up once during the last three days, and I felt warm all over when I went to sleep at night, so it's having some effect."

“Those few days,” Tao Yue said happily, “Then I’ll go across the street to return the bowl, and then I’ll go for a walk with you in a little while.”

"Go ahead."

Tao Yue changed her shoes and ran to Su Yan's house to return the bowl. Grandma Li and the others were at home.

After she came out, she ran to a phone booth and dialed her brother's office number.

Hello, who is this?

“It’s me, brother!” she said quickly.

Tao Jin's voice was tinged with doubt, "Xiaoyue? Why are you calling me at this hour? Is something wrong with Grandma?"

"No!" Tao Yue said in one breath, "Miss Su is taking the train to Beijing today. Have someone look for her and make sure she isn't bullied in Beijing."

There was a two-second silence on the other end of the phone before a voice came through, "...She should have friends in Beijing to meet her, so I don't need to worry about it, right?"

"Why do you care so much? Grandma's health improved after taking the medicinal food she made, so she's a great benefactor to our family. What's wrong with you taking good care of your benefactor?"

Tao Jin knew her sister was unusually persistent in her feelings for Su Yan, so she stopped arguing with her. "Alright, I'll have someone check her train ticket and have someone secretly follow her. They won't bother her unless there's a problem, until she leaves Beijing safely. Is that satisfactory, Miss Tao?"

Tao Yue smiled with satisfaction and snorted, "That's more like it!"

Tao Jin laughed angrily, "You're so close to her, I'm starting to wonder if you're her long-lost daughter. I've been so good to you as your older brother, but you've never been so sympathetic to me."

"You want me to side with you? Sure, you marry Miss Su and make her your sister-in-law, and I promise I'll fawn over you every day, helping you put on your shoes and kneeling to greet you when you come home. How about that?"

A sly glint flashed in Tao Yue's eyes.

"Don't say things like that again," Tao Jin said sternly. "If Miss Su hears this, how awkward will it be when we meet again? Do you understand?"

He never expected his sister to have such a wicked idea; it was simply outrageous.

He didn't look down on Su Yan; it's just that his requirement for a future partner was that their family backgrounds be on par, so that he wouldn't be a burden to her.

Besides, Su Yan is still so young, even younger than Tao Yue. What kind of behavior would it be if she became her sister-in-law?

Tao Yue pouted and said reluctantly, "I definitely won't tell her, I'm telling you, aren't I?"

Tao Jin, on the other end of the phone, rubbed her temples with a slight headache. "Even if I agree, I definitely won't get past my parents. I should just give up on this idea."

Tao Yue thought of her materialistic and strict parents and immediately felt conflicted.

Her parents have very high expectations for their future partners. Many girls have tried to get close to her brother, but they were all scared away by her mother.

If Su Yan goes to her house, won't she be met with cold shoulders?

Realizing this was highly likely, Tao Yue immediately abandoned the idea.

Never mind.

It's her brother's fault for not being good enough; he doesn't have that kind of luck. Once they get back to Beijing, she'll find Su Yan a better match!

Su Yan, who had just caught the train, was unaware that someone had already found her a future partner.

Jiang Jingxing bought her a soft sleeper berth on the train. When she arrived at the berth, she saw a woman with her head wrapped up lying there with two children who were three or four years old. There were two snakeskin bags filled with things at the foot of the bed.

"Hello, this is my bed," she said.

The woman glanced at her, then reluctantly stepped aside with her child and luggage.

The white comforter and pillowcases on the bed were smudged and covered in mud.

Su Yan took a deep breath, stopped a passing train conductor, and asked, "Hello comrade, my bed sheet is soiled. Could you please get me a new set so I can change it myself?"

The train attendant was a young woman. After hearing this, she glanced at the berth before nodding, "Okay, please wait a moment."

The country woman who had just been with her two children sat down in the corridor. Hearing this, she scoffed and said sarcastically, "Such fuss over nothing, complaining that I'm dirty? Just because you bought a sleeper berth, you think you're some kind of city person?"

Considering how young the two children were, Su Yan didn't bother arguing with her.

The train attendant brought over a new three-piece suit, which she took and put on without saying a word.

After changing, she put her luggage down beside her before lying down. The train was smelly and stuffy, but the conditions were limited, so she had to make do.

Moreover, the journey to Beijing takes more than ten hours, and it's impossible to buy a long-distance sleeper ticket without connections.

The train wouldn't arrive in Beijing until around 11 p.m. Su Yan took out the savory pancake she bought at the train station from her bag, ate it for breakfast, and then lay down on the bed to rest.

She was exhausted these past few days and fell asleep instantly when she closed her eyes.

The woman with two children swallowed hard when she saw the unfinished savory pancake on the table.

"Dani, she didn't finish that savory pancake. Go up and ask her to come and eat it." She said, giving her four-year-old daughter a push.

Da Ni wanted to refuse, but when she turned around, she was met with her mother's fierce and threatening expression, which frightened her so much that she took a step back.

Then, grabbing the hem of her clothes, she walked to Su Yan's bedside and whispered, "Sister, can I have the pancakes on your table?"

Su Yan opened her eyes and saw the girl by the bed. She subconsciously glanced in the direction of the woman.

The woman kept glancing at her, her expression a mixture of guilt and smugness.

Su Yan's expression turned cold, and she turned her gaze back to the little girl in front of her.

Da Ni was still wearing long-sleeved clothes, her little face was dirty, her hair was messy, her complexion was sallow, and she looked malnourished. Her eyes were filled with obvious fear when she looked at me.

"Sure, but I'm not full yet. Why don't you bring your sister over to eat with us?" Su Yan said with a smile.

Da Ni hesitated for a moment, then turned around and walked back, saying, "Mother, my sister said I should bring my younger sister over to eat with us."

The woman's face flushed instantly upon hearing this, and she glared angrily at Su Yan.

They were only two steps apart, and her desire to take advantage was so obvious that Su Yan was too lazy to argue with her, saving herself the trouble of talking.

The woman deliberately threw her youngest daughter, Xiao Ni, who she was holding, onto the ground.

Xiao Ni pouted in pain, but dared not cry.

She grabbed Da Ni's arm and said through gritted teeth, "You're not allowed to eat them. You have to bring them back for me to eat later. If you dare to finish them, I'll beat you to death!"
