Rebirth: Let's Talk About 1984

According to reports, this story begins at an entirely unscientific moment: Zhou Ziye, a designer who rose from creating counterfeit mobile phones, suddenly time-traveled back to the year 1984.

Chapter 14 Tube Amplifier

Perhaps she was tired of standing, Su Ya found a chair and sat next to Xing Baohua.

Watching his hands fly across the keyboard, the crisp sound carried a pleasant rhythm. Every now and then, he would add an accent, his thumb striking the spacebar heavily.

They couldn't understand the English letters and numbers either.

A series of 0s and 1s. One might ask Xing Baohua what he's doing with this? Surely he's not just randomly typing things out.

Seeing that he was completely absorbed and didn't explain, I stopped talking and just observed him statically until my mind wandered.

Out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw a figure pause briefly at the doorway before walking away. That figure was familiar; I saw him every day, we talked every day. Sometimes we even ate together in the cafeteria.

Hou Liwei invited her to watch movies and go to the factory club after get off work several times.

I don't know why, but I always felt a sense of resistance. Even after I refused many times, Hou Liwei didn't get angry and still tried to arrange dates whenever he had the chance.

The little gadget Xing Baohua brought had a constantly flashing light. My thoughts returned to him, and I looked at him again; he was still so serious and meticulous.

I noticed that his eyes were always fixed on the screen, and his fingers were flying across the keyboard.

The lunch break bell rang, and Su Ya asked, "Aren't you going to eat?"

She asked twice, but Xing Baohua didn't respond, as if she didn't care about her.

Su Ya patted him on the shoulder, and Xing Baohua turned to look at her, saying, "What is it?"

"You're off work, aren't you going home for dinner?"

"You go ahead, I'll be done here soon," Xing Baohua said.

"No one can stay here at noon," Su Ya said.

"You have to keep me here even if you can't! I'll be done in half an hour or forty minutes at most. You go eat first, and I'll be done by the time you're done."

"I didn't get a bonus this month, and I don't want to miss out next month either," Su Ya said, biting her lip slightly.

"I'll make it up to you, you can go now. Your talking makes me miss typing two lines of code." Xing Baohua stopped what he was doing as he spoke, afraid that he might make a mistake while not paying full attention.

If a mistake happens, it's a real headache to have to fix it all over again. Finding the error in a bunch of 0s and 1s is so easy to make your eyes dizzy and the more you look, the more disoriented you become.

Without urging Xing Baohua to go eat, Su Ya stood up and said, "Do I need to bring you food?"

"No need for that, I'll just eat it when I get back. You should hurry up! There won't be much left if you go too late," Xing Baohua said.

Watching Su Ya walk towards the door and change out of her white coat, Xing Baohua narrowed his eyes slightly as she bent down to remove her shoe covers. He lightly touched his nose and refocused his attention on the screen.

As soon as Su Ya came downstairs, she saw Hou Liwei smoking and leaning against the stair railing, waiting for her.

"I thought you weren't coming down for dinner," Hou Liwei said when he saw Su Ya come down.

Suya didn't say anything and continued walking forward.

"What's that kid fiddling with?" Hou Liwei asked, ignoring Su Ya's indifference.

Su Ya paused for a moment, then turned her head and said, "I didn't understand. He said he was repairing the computer."

"Hehe, do you believe it? The crackling sound could be heard throughout the entire hallway."

"Why should I believe that? No one in your office even came out to ask, why should I care?" The two walked side-by-side out of the office building, pausing briefly. Su Ya said:

"Liwei, shouldn't we have a serious talk? I have a nagging feeling that I'm not entirely comfortable with this."

Hou Liwei stood there, staring at Su Ya's face. He didn't answer immediately, pausing for a moment as if thinking before saying, "I don't quite understand what you mean by 'uneasy'?"

"I can't quite put my finger on it. I just feel uneasy." After saying this, Su Ya seemed to avoid looking at Hou Liwei, lowered her head, and turned to leave.

The two walked towards the cafeteria in silence.

Xing Baohua typed the last byte and finally breathed a sigh of relief.

He stretched and muttered to himself, "It's been so long since I've felt this good. Huh, Su Ya hasn't come back yet?"

First, I backed up the data on the floppy disk, then unplugged it step by step. Finally, I shut down the computer and tidied up the desktop. Seeing the ceramic mug, I realized I hadn't drunk any water all morning. I immediately picked it up and drank it all in one gulp.

As she was getting up to leave, Su Ya held an aluminum lunchbox in her hand and walked to the door.

"Are you done?" Su Ya asked.

"I'm all done, and I was just about to pack up and leave. You're back just in time, can we close the door now?" Xing Baohua said as she walked to the door.

"I brought you some food, you eat first." Su Ya put the lunchbox into his hand.

"No need, I'll go back and eat now. You can keep it for tonight. I'll treat you to dinner later. Don't make excuses to refuse then." Xing Baohua said, stuffing the lunchbox back into the box.

He immediately turned around, grabbed his things, and left.

"Let's talk about dinner later. By the way, can I ask you for help with some English words I don't know?" Su Ya said.

"As long as I'm in the repair shop or factory area, you can find me anytime, I'll be there whenever you call."

Su Ya smiled slightly and said, "Okay, then tell me now, what are you doing?"

"You really want to know?" Xing Baohua asked, still puzzled. Why was this girl so curious? She was constantly asking him about Xu Shuai, which was driving him crazy.

Seeing Su Ya nod, Xing Baohua said with a mysterious smile, "The key program of the audio system. To put it simply, I'm making an audio amplifier."

"Oh," Su Ya nodded as if she understood. Finally, there was something she could understand.

"Wait, something's not right," Su Ya asked hurriedly, as if she had just realized something.

"Is the amplifier you're talking about plugged into the large speaker?" Su Ya asked, gesturing with her hands.

Xing Baohua nodded: "Yes! You've met him."

“I’ve seen it, and I’ve even seen it being repaired. When I was in high school, I was the school’s announcer. Once, when I was reading poetry to my classmates, the equipment broke down, and I saw it being repaired.”
