Lín Wēi only realized when she died that having a sister-favoring mother would cause so much damage to her family.

Her father fell from a great height and died. Her younger brother went mis...

Chapter 24: A staged accident?

As the weather got hotter, Lin Wei worried that the children would get too hot, so she bought each of them an ice pop to cool them down when she got home.

"Take it to the Gao family, brothers and sisters, hurry up, don't let it melt. Go home after you've delivered it."

Lin Yuan hurriedly asked, "Sister, aren't you going back?"

"We're out of rice at home, so I'll go next door to buy two bags and push them back in the cart. You guys go ahead, I'll be back a little later."

Knowing they couldn't help, the three children didn't cause any trouble and went into the alley with their popsicles.

Uncle Li, the owner of the convenience store, used to work at the yarn factory. After a few days, he got to know them well. After giving her her change, Uncle Li asked, "Weiwei, I heard you're setting up a stall outside. It seems business is good. The two Su kids aren't enough to help you, so the two Gao kids are helping you today too?"

"It's a small business, just enough to cover three meals a day. I didn't originally intend for them to help. Kids can't do much work, but it's lively having them around. Plus, my younger brother wants to play with them. As long as we don't lose money, it's fine. I'll just treat it as a way to toughen up."

“Those two kids from the Su family are really naughty. Don’t you find them annoying? Before you came, your Aunt Zhang scolded them every day, but I haven’t heard them scolding anyone for several days now.”

As soon as Uncle Li finished speaking, Zhang Min appeared behind them with a smile. "Hey Brother Li, why are you still gossiping about people behind their backs? But seriously, these two little rascals are so well-behaved. Even I'm not used to it, let alone you guys. It feels like there's hope for the future again."

Turning her head, Zhang Min asked, "Weiwei, are you done shopping? Let's go back together."

"Aunt Zhang, I'm going to buy two more bags of rice from next door. We're out of rice at home."

"Perfect timing, I need a bag too, can you tow it in with this car?"

"That's what I was thinking, so I left the car behind on purpose."

The two pushed the cart to a nearby grain and oil shop, put three bags of rice and a large watermelon on the cart, and then pushed it into the alley together.

But before they had taken two steps, they heard the children's noisy chatter.

"You little brats, it seems I didn't teach you a lesson last time? You've all gone too far."

"Bad guy, let go of Brother Hongye."

"Help! Someone help! Uncle Wang has killed someone!"

Su Sijin's voice was loud and urgent. Zhang Min was startled when she heard it. "It's Sijin, Yuanyuan, and Hongye. I'll go check on them."

"I'll go too."

Lin Wei abandoned the car and ran inside. In the blink of an eye, she saw the children, who had just returned home perfectly fine, lying all over the ground.

Meanwhile, Wang Changzhi, the younger brother, was holding Wu Hongye's collar with his left hand and raising his right fist high.

Just as the fist was about to land on his face, a stainless steel spoon struck Wang Changzhi's arm with a loud 'bang'.

"Ouch!" Wang Changzhi winced in pain, released his grip on Wu Hongye's hand, and turned to angrily shout, "Who is it?"

"Your grandma!" Lin Wei shouted. Zhang Min was startled by her loud voice, but she immediately reacted and yelled at Wang Changzhi, "Wang Changzhi, you hit a child when the adults aren't around, have you no shame?"

"mom."

"elder sister."

Seeing that the adults had finally arrived, the children, as if they had found a bulwark, scrambled to their feet one by one and ran behind Zhang Min and Lin Wei to hide.

Wang Changzhi was furious. "These little brats hit me first!"

“Our children are all good children. If you hadn’t done something wrong, who would have bothered you?” Zhang Min pointed at Wang Changzhi and started yelling, “Tell me, what exactly did you do while we were away?”

The children couldn't keep secrets at all, and before Wang Changzhi could even speak, they all rushed to tell on him.

"Uncle Wang beat up Brother Hongye, and his face was all swollen."

"Uncle Wang pushed Sister Ling down and tore her clothes."

"When we tried to stop him, he pushed us down. Mom, it hurts so much, my hand is all scraped."

"Sister, she called me a little brat and said that Aunt's house will be his sooner or later, and then he will kick us all out."

"Yes, we all heard it."

"Nonsense!" Wang Changzhi felt wronged. "Those little bastards are always tattling. It was the Gao family brat who started it."

"How old is the Gao family's child? If you hadn't bullied him, why would the Gao family's kid have resorted to violence?"

Zhang Min's words left Wang Changzhi speechless.

Just then, Lin Wei realized something was wrong.

She quickly looked around and then questioned him on the spot, "You didn't try to steal money from my house, and the kids caught you red-handed, which is why the conflict happened, did you?"

The noisy atmosphere instantly fell silent.

Wang Changzhi gasped, his eyes widening in shock.

Anyone who saw this reaction would know that Lin Wei had guessed correctly.

But Wang Changzhi would never admit it, saying, "Nonsense, don't wrong me."

"I'm accusing someone? You're insulting my intelligence."

“My aunt’s wall has been raised. To allow sunlight to enter, a hollowed-out pattern of bricks was made in the middle, so you can see inside but not go in. There are people at the Gao family’s house 24 hours a day. Although Grandma Gao can’t move, she can still talk. If she hears a noise and calls out, the two children will come out immediately.”

“But there’s no one at the Su family’s side. Although their courtyard wall isn’t low, you can climb it by placing a few bricks underneath. Then you can climb from their house to my aunt’s house. The bricks outside the Su family’s courtyard are proof of that.”

"Nonsense, how much money could your aunt have that would make me climb over the wall to steal it?"

“My aunt doesn’t have much money, but I’ve only been running my food stall for a few days. First I asked the Su family’s kids for help, and now I’m asking the Gao family’s kids for help. If outsiders see this, they might have other ideas.”
