Chapter Sixty-Eight Raisins
The woman with phoenix eyes arrived at the dilapidated village, searching for shelter. The only intact house she found was covered in dust and cobwebs. She frowned, then returned to her old carriage, moving the six Siberian reindeer that pulled it into the cabin. It wasn't that she couldn't clean the room, but she figured with a comfortable carriage, one night's stay was fine; why bother with extra work?
Just as he returned to the carriage, he sensed someone rapidly approaching the village. The person made no attempt to scout ahead, acting extremely arrogantly. Danfeng eyes carefully sensed the disturbances in the earth's energy, detecting no aura of any high-level cultivator. Suddenly intrigued, she decided to wait and see what kind of mortal dared to be so audacious and arrogant. After all, in this desolate wilderness, the mutual wariness between people was even greater than the wariness of wild beasts.
A dozen or so stray dogs pulled a strange-looking sled into the crumbling fence of the yard, causing Danfengyan to freeze in surprise. She wasn't surprised by the unusual dog-drawn sled, but by the person on it, completely covered in white, with a pair of oddly shaped black crystal lenses over their eyes. Upon seeing her, the person looked visibly surprised, appearing somewhat... comical.
"Sorry...long time no see." This seemingly random phrase immediately made Danhuangyan realize who this person was, because he had heard the phrase "sorry" before.
"I think it's going to snow soon, so I thought I'd come here to avoid it. What do you think...?" Qin Mo looked at the mysterious woman and asked in a consultative tone. He knew her habits; she didn't like getting too close to people. The first thing they did after leaving Wulan City was to clash with her charioteer, Qing Ning, over camping.
Danfengyan remained silent, simply crossing her arms. Her face was veiled, making it impossible to discern her joy or anger, but the chill in her eyes showed no sign of abating, revealing her true attitude to Qin Mo.
"Hey! We're all from Great Xia. Can you please be a little more considerate when you're out and about? This house is so big, you can't possibly live in it all by yourself, can you?" Qin Mo was a little annoyed. This was the only intact wooden house in the village. Even though you arrived first, the house wasn't yours, was it?
Danfengyan remained silent, simply standing quietly on the carriage shaft, looking down at Qin Mo like a lioness guarding her territory.
"Those legs are so long..." Qin Mo sat on the sled, her almond-shaped eyes perched on the carriage shaft. Due to the angle, Qin Mo's gaze was somewhat awkward. The sled had stopped too abruptly, almost scraping against the carriage, and the two of them had unintentionally gotten too close. A faint, sweet fragrance wafted over, reaching Qin Mo's mind.
Qin Mo shook her head vigorously and started making conversation. "Where's your charioteer? That 'heroine' named Qing Ning, my guards are still hung up on her... blah blah blah." A chill began to emanate from her phoenix eyes, and Qin Mo suddenly shivered.
"Wow! Your carriage has been modified! These two sleds are so long and straight... just like a supermodel's thighs..." Looking at the two long sleds under the carriage wheels, Qin Mo almost blurted out the word "thighs".
Qin Mo spoke halfway through his monologue, his phoenix eyes remaining silent. He couldn't help feeling frustrated; he hadn't learned how to flirt with girls in his past life, and even now, looking like this, it was all for naught. He wouldn't be able to stay in that big house tonight; it seemed he'd have to find a sheltered corner to make do.
He was about to turn back to check on the collapsed stone houses when he heard a clear, cold voice say, "Since I've used your 'sled' method, I can't be ruthless. I'll just have the carriage find shelter from the wind; you can stay in the wooden house yourself." With that, the phoenix-eyed man darted into the wooden house and drove his reindeer to a half-collapsed stone house.
Qin Mo was overjoyed and called out to the carriage, "Thank you!" He then went into the wooden cabin to begin cleaning. After a simple cleaning, Qin Mo unloaded his outdoor gear from the sled. The narrow but sturdy tent, the exquisite copper stove, the pots and pans, and the smokeless charcoal quickly filled the wooden cabin with a warm and cozy atmosphere.
Large snowflakes finally began to fall, drifting and fluttering in the cold wind. Qin Mo first used snow water to thaw some brown bear meat that had frozen into lumps, feeding the twenty-odd huskies until they were full. He then settled them in a collapsed house in the village. He had originally wanted to bring more dogs, but the sled simply couldn't hold much more dog food, so he had to take only a few with him. Every ten days or so, he had to hunt for prey to replenish the dog food.
Qin Mo filtered the snow water and boiled it. Then, she took out an oiled paper package from the wooden bucket, opened it, and put the dried beef and spices inside in to simmer. Soon, a fragrant aroma spread, reaching all the way to the carriage outside.
Qin Mo ladled out a bowl of meat soup, walked to the carriage, placed the bowl directly on the carriage shaft, and said to the carriage, "Meeting in a place like this is fate. I made an extra meal, don't mind!"
Qin Mo felt his words were completely superfluous, gave a self-deprecating laugh, opened a bottle of strong liquor, and placed it on the carriage shaft. The strong aroma of the liquor mingled with the smell of beef broth, brimming with sincerity.
Qin Mo ate heartily inside, downing half a bottle of strong liquor, and soon his stomach was round and full. Satisfied, he rubbed his belly and crawled into his tent. The warm sleeping bag enveloped his body, and he almost cried out in comfort.
"I can finally get a good night's sleep! That woman outside must be extraordinary, otherwise how could she dare to walk alone on the snowfield?" Humans are strange creatures; when alone in the wild, one can barely sleep with one eye open. But it's different for two people; even without someone on night watch, they can sleep soundly. Perhaps this is the effect of something called "reliance." Of course, if a burly man were sleeping outside, Qin Mo might not think this way.
