Small Town Rebirth: Starting From Birth

On the internet, people often commemorate their childhoods. Chen Bing, a young man from a small town who was one of them, found himself back 24 years ago, in the small town of his birth, after his ...

Side Story (5): Back to the Past

Speaking of which, when was the last time you went back to Shiraishi?

A year ago, two years ago, or even longer ago?

For the purpose of a scenic drive, Chen Bing and his companion took a bus from Shangping County to Baishi Town. The ever-changing scenery along the way stirred his thoughts.

According to my memory, he was born in Baishi Town, then spent his childhood, primary and secondary school years in an ordinary way, then went to Shangping County for high school, and finally went to Jinan, the provincial capital, for university.

After graduating from university after four years, I passed the local civil service exam with great success. Just as my life was settling down, an unexpected event occurred, and I was reborn back to the time of my birth.

Then came another similar life trajectory. Today, compared to this time in my previous life, my life experiences are indeed very different.

However, after so many years, Chen Bing can't quite remember how she felt when she first stepped into the gates of Baishi No.1 Middle School.

Just like when they went to Shangping Experimental School, the gatekeeper at Baishi No.1 Middle School recognized Chen Bing and his companion, which saved them a lot of trouble, allowing them to enter and exit without any hindrance.

"The school has been renovated quite a bit." After entering the school gate, Chen Bing looked around and found that the campus had changed drastically, at least it was very different from when she graduated.

"Wow, how many years has this banner been around? It's still here." Chen Bing pointed to the banner above the exit of the teaching building with a look of surprise. Shang Yunmiao looked in the direction he was pointing and saw a line of words written on the brand-new red banner.

"Warmly congratulate our student Chen Bing (the top scorer in the 2023 Shandong Province College Entrance Examination) for achieving first place in the grade with an outstanding score of xxx in the mid-term (final) exams of the first (second) semester of the 20xx-20xx academic year."

"I remember pulling this up when I was in the third year of junior high school, right? It's still hanging here after all these years."

"It's a little different from the original."

Chen Bing nodded, agreeing with Corporal Xiao Shang's point of view. After all, in daily life, no mystical being could predict around 2019 that they would be the top scorer in the 2023 college entrance examination, so the top scorer title in parentheses was clearly a later one.

"Speaking of which, we took a group photo here before our high school graduation, remember? How about it, a pilgrimage to a sacred site, want to recreate the classic moment?"

After recalling what kind of classic Chen Bing was referring to, Shang Yunmiao shook her head vigorously, rejecting the suggestion.

"No way! What if someone sees us?"

Chen Bing had only said it casually, but seeing Xiao Shang's firm refusal, he became quite interested. What's that saying again? The more you resist, the more excited I get?

"Come on, the teachers and students are probably in class right now, no one will see us, just take a picture."

Ultimately, under Chen Bing's coaxing and deception, Shang Yunmiao was forced to agree.

But how was it filmed back then?

Chen Bing dug out old photos from her phone's album and showed them to Shang Yunmiao.

After finishing the lesson, Xiao Shang wasn't as hesitant as before; she simply leaned in and gave him a quick kiss, and that was it.

"Wait, didn't you take two pictures back then?" Chen Bing grabbed Shang Yunmiao's hand as she was about to leave, and waved the photos on her phone screen, kindly reminding her.

"Oh dear, Chen Bing, you have so many things to do..." Shang Yunmiao blushed, her eyes warily scanning her surroundings, as if afraid that someone might suddenly jump out from some corner.

Her rabbit-like expression made Chen Bing's mouth itch. After staring at her face with a smile for a while, Chen Bing saw that Comrade Xiao Shang had finished surveying the surroundings and turned around to say timidly, "Then, then you come, but be quick."

Xiao Shang's blushing face was indeed adorable, and the surroundings instantly brought back memories for Chen Bing of her junior high school days. Back then, Xiao Shang was just a little girl, more innocent and her face was more prone to blushing.

In short...

Cute, it's pouted.

...

Cough, no, it's just a simple kiss. Whether we pout or not, we'll have to wait until we get home to talk about it.

After taking a commemorative photo, Chen Bing and the other person did not linger. They glanced at the time and headed straight for Yun Xuan's office.

In the office, the two inevitably got teased and talked about by other teachers, but fortunately, with Yun's mother by their side to help, they were able to get away quickly.

After leaving the office, the two figured they had nothing else to do, so they leisurely strolled around the campus, fulfilling their plan not to wander around Shangping Experimental School that morning.

They first went to their old classroom right after class started. Instead of going in immediately, they peeked inside through the doors and windows for a while.

Huh? Do first and second-year junior high students look this young? Xiao Shang and I used to look like this too? I don't think so.

Looking at those still-childish faces, Chen Bing suddenly felt a pang of guilt.

So, the girl I flirted with and liked back then was only this age. Amitabha, I was truly wicked; may God forgive me, Amen.

After repenting, Chen Bing glanced at Xiao Shang beside her, wondering if she still had her junior high school uniform. Given Shang Yunmiao's meticulousness, she should have kept it safe.

If it gets lost, the only punishment will be to make her wear different clothes.

Pulling her thoughts back from the wicked direction, Chen Bing glanced at the contents of the blackboard and realized that it was a biology class.

Calculating the time, these eighth graders are about to take their biology and geography final exams. What were Xiao Shang and I doing at this time back then? Eating popsicles? Before Chen Bing could recall, he noticed the teacher on the podium who had taught him before.

I remember his surname was Feng, and he was a very good teacher.

"Let's go explore some other places."

After patting Shang Yunmiao on the shoulder and hearing the girl respond with an "Mmm," Chen Bing led her away to another location.

"Huh? That's strange." Teacher Feng, who was teaching, suddenly caught a glimpse of a familiar figure from behind, which triggered some memories.

He put down his lecture notes, walked out of the classroom and glanced into the corridor, but didn't see anything.

"You must have seen wrong." He shook his head, turned around, and went back to the classroom.

When he returned, he looked at the listless students below the podium and couldn't help but recall the time when he taught Chen Bing.

"Ahem, look at you all now." Teacher Feng shook his head in exasperation, then rolled up his handouts and slung them behind his back. He then shook his head and spoke in a pretentious manner, "Back when I taught Chen Bing, he wasn't as listless as you all."

The students below the podium remained unmoved upon hearing this. The reason was that they had heard Lao Feng and Chen Bing talk about it countless times over the past year or two.

Many students who had been taught by him since the first year of junior high school could even predict what he was going to say just by hearing the first sentence.

This was a serious subject, jokingly referred to as "Feng Chen Studies" by everyone in the class. And the most accomplished in Feng Chen Studies was a mischievous boy in the third row by the window. He stood there, brimming with knowledge and confidence, one hand propped on his desk, reciting in a swaying, head-shaking manner, mimicking Teacher Feng: "I remember when this kid was in the second year of junior high, he came back to my house with me and we had a meal together. Back then, I thought he was a good kid, and I even told my wife that he was destined to be the top scholar in the imperial examinations. My wife didn't believe me then, but hey, as you all know, he really did become the top scholar. What's that called? That's called living up to expectations! You should all learn from him, properly live up to expectations, understand, classmates?"

As he finished speaking, Teacher Feng had just said, "He really did get the top score in the exam." The boy chuckled softly, twirling his pen while gazing out the window, already wondering what delicious food the cafeteria would be serving for dinner.

Just as he turned his gaze to the window, he saw a familiar face walking towards him.

The more the boy looked at it, the more familiar it seemed. Eventually, the face matched the portrait on a poster he often saw.

He couldn't help but exclaim, "Holy crap! Ice!"
