Medical doctor Su Wan transmigrated to the Great Jin Dynasty. She initially thought she was in for a typical palace maid/harem drama, but soon she was married off as a bride to bring good luck by h...
The tidal wave of shouts and the clash of weapons roused Su Wan from her unconsciousness.
She barely managed to open her eyes; the night sky was blurry, as if she had severe cataracts. Her ears were ringing, and her head was throbbing with pain.
He is still conscious, so he probably has a mild concussion.
She gritted her teeth and propped herself up, first touching her cheek. She didn't feel any blood, only a lot of dirt and ice shards.
She breathed a sigh of relief and tried to move her body a little more. Aside from feeling like her bones were about to fall apart, everything else was still responsive.
"Where's Ah Jin... Ah Jin, where are you?"
Her last memory was of Wei Jingzhuo embracing her, and the two of them flying into the air. It seemed as if some kind of intense impact had occurred.
She called out and looked around, but her vision was blurry. She could only see many people lying on the ground nearby, and she couldn't tell which one was Wei Jingzhuo. The things in the distance were completely blurry, as if the camera was out of focus.
She rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand, which was covered in ice and dirt, and opened her eyes wide, but she still couldn't see clearly.
She was a little anxious, so she crawled on her hands and feet to the nearest person and grabbed that person's hand.
It felt like there were a bunch of little people arguing in my head. I was dizzy and could only vaguely make out that the hand belonged to a man.
"Is that Ah Jin?" She grabbed the hand and shook it vigorously. "Answer me quickly."
The person didn't move at all.
Su Wan's heart began to race, and she placed her fingers on the man's wrist.
The pulse has disappeared.
"Don't tease me, please don't." She trembled as she touched the man's back, brushed away the clods of dirt, and went to touch the armor.
It was not the silver armor worn by Wei Jingzhuo, but the leather armor of an ordinary soldier.
"Thank God," she said, letting go of the man and crawling toward another. "That scared the hell out of me."
This time, she was more experienced and went directly to touch the armor on the man's body. It was still not Wei Jingzhuo, and her hands were covered in blood.
"Ah Jin, answer me quickly if you hear me... I can't see clearly."
She wiped the blood from her hands on her clothes, then turned and crawled toward another person nearby.
After touching several corpses, none of them were the cause of her distress. She felt utterly exhausted, and waves of nausea and vomiting washed over her. Knowing this was a symptom of a concussion, she rolled over and sat on the floor. Her consciousness drifted into the pharmacy, where she retrieved an ibuprofen tablet and a metoclopramide tablet, chewed them, and swallowed them.
"Ah Jin, where are you?" she asked, her voice trembling with tears.
A large, cold hand grasped hers, and then Wei Jingzhuo's voice rang out: "Don't cry, I'm here."
Su Wan was overjoyed and turned over to hug Wei Jingzhuo, who was lying on the ground: "You're alright, that's great... Oh dear, your back is bleeding."
She hugged Wei Jingzhuo from behind, her arm stained with blood, and couldn't help but gasp in shock.
“It’s nothing, it was probably just some loose rock,” Wei Jingzhuo said, propping himself up and sitting down next to her. “I can’t stand up, I need to rest.”
"Let me take care of it for you." Su Wan moved behind Wei Jingzhuo, took a bottle of saline solution from the pharmacy, tore open her ripped clothes, and poured it onto the wound on Wei Jingzhuo's back. "I need to clean the wound first..."
Her vision is no longer as blurry as it was when she first woke up; she can see more clearly now.
Wei Jingzhuo had a long gash on his back, running from the bottom of his ribs all the way to the outside of his shoulder blade. Judging from her experience, the wound wasn't too deep and probably hadn't damaged any bones or tendons, but Wei Jingzhuo must have been in a lot of pain.
“Chu Yi is very clever,” Wei Jingzhuo said. “He used trebuchets to cover up the tunnel digging, and he knew he couldn’t hide it from me, so he only dug the tunnel to the bottom of the city wall and then stopped.”
"What just happened?" Su Wan put down the empty bottle and took out hydrogen peroxide. "Bear with it, I need to disinfect the wound."
"He transported the explosives to the base of the city wall. Look at the city wall."
Su Wan looked over Wei Jingzhuo's shoulder toward the city wall.
A huge gap appeared at the foot of the west city wall, as high as a two-story building and wide enough for two carriages to pass side by side. The shouts and sounds of fighting that had just awakened her came from that gap.
The garrison at Xiping Pass was swarming at the breach, a chaotic mass of people, with screams of agony echoing through the crowd, interspersed with someone's loud shouts.
"Everyone, block them off! Don't let the Southern Chu army break in. If they do, we're finished."
"Those with shields stand in front. Those behind use spears to stab."
"There are too many! Quickly, use your bows and arrows to shoot them down from the city walls!"
Su Wan seemed to be seeing a terrible nightmare, and the hand on Wei Jingzhuo's shoulder trembled.
The city wall has been breached.
Through that gap, she could even see the firelight of the Southern Chu army outside the city, their long spears swaying like a dense forest, reflecting a chilling light, rushing towards the breach like a flood.
"Where is my sworn sister?" She thought of Meng Ruliu, who had been standing not far from the trench.
Her vision had mostly recovered, and she quickly scanned the rubble and corpses on the ground, immediately spotting Meng Ruliu lying on her side.
"Sister-in-law".
She threw away the empty bottle in her hand, struggled to her feet, and stumbled to Meng Ruliu's side. She squatted down and patted Meng Ruliu's face: "Sister, wake up quickly, the Southern Chu army is about to break in."
Meng Ruliu kept her eyes closed and did not respond.
She checked her over. Meng Ruliu had no external injuries; it seemed that, like her, she had been injured by the impact of the explosion.
She called out several times, but Meng Ruliu still didn't wake up. She had no choice but to hold Meng Ruliu's hands and use all her strength to drag her away from the gap.
Wei Jingzhuo was injured in the back and unable to get up. Meng Ruliu was also unconscious, and the Southern Chu army was surging towards the breach like a tide. Once they broke into the city, how could Su Yuze and Zhao Xiyue escape?
