Yangziling is an east-west mountain range, stretching for tens of kilometers from east to west, but only a dozen kilometers from north to south.

The highest point of the mountain is a few kilometers away from the station, and is about three or four hundred meters higher in altitude than the station.

At the top of the mountain is the Temple of Mr. Yangzi. Legend has it that a great scholar surnamed Yang from the Song Dynasty once built a hermitage on the mountaintop, where he wrote books and spread his knowledge, leaving behind immortal works. People respected him, so they renamed the mountain Yangzi Ridge, with Yangzi being an honorific title for him.

Yangziling is divided into two parts by the summit of Yangziling Mountain.

The eastern part is mainly broad-leaved forest, supplemented by coniferous forest. The four seasons are distinct: spring brings budding trees, summer brings lush greenery, autumn brings fallen leaves covering the mountains, and winter leaves the area bare.

But once you pass the mountaintop, the western mountains become dominated by coniferous forests. The leaves are there all year round, green and lush, unlike broad-leaved forests where eight or nine out of ten leaves fall in autumn and winter.

So even now in December, the eastern peaks look like bald patches on a head, while the western peaks are still covered by lush green pine and cypress forests.

Wild animals in forests often choose their habitats according to forest patterns.

The broad-leaved forest area to the east is not suitable for the long-term survival of wild animals because of the distinct changes in vegetation throughout the four seasons. Only some small animals such as rabbits, pheasants, weasels, minks and badgers appear, and it is difficult to see large wild animals.

Conversely, the western peaks, perpetually covered by vast forests, provide ideal hiding and hibernation for them. Consequently, the food chain for wildlife is more diverse, encompassing everything from small rodents to large animals like bears, deer, leopards, and wolves.

For the local mountain people, even if they want to catch some wild animals in the mountains, they can only move around on the eastern half of the mountain peak, and try to stay as close to the eastern side as possible to prevent wild animals from the west side from crossing the mountain peak and moving to the eastern edge of the area.

Generally speaking, it is relatively safe.

It was perfectly normal for Wang Tianxiao to encounter a leopard cat at the edge of the mountain last time, but encountering a jackal was not so normal.

However, considering that there were only two or three jackals scattered around rather than in large groups, it becomes normal.

They were probably stragglers who had been driven out of the ranks by the jackals, and somehow ended up on the eastern edge, where Wang Tianxiao happened to run into them.

Wang Tianxiao's planting of dandelions and wormwood in Shandong was also based on this consideration.

This area is much safer; there's not much danger in planting and harvesting. He plans to plant medicinal herbs like ginseng and astragalus on the western peaks. Large-scale planting isn't necessary; intensive cultivation is possible. This also means fewer people will be needed for harvesting, so there's less concern about safety.
