System and I Don't Match

Chapter Thirteen: The Strangulation of Vines

“It concerns my life, so it is naturally the most important thing in the world,” Wu Yu said resolutely, showing no possibility of backing down on this matter.

"Can you tell me?" Violet asked, but she didn't seem eager; the choice was entirely up to Wu Yu.

“I need to find out the truth about the end of the world,” Wu Yu replied truthfully.

There was no need to tell Violet this; it would be too cruel to let someone powerless know such a despairing truth. But if he didn't tell her, a rift would inevitably form between them, which was something Wu Yu didn't want to see either.

So Wu Yu added, "Don't worry, I'll protect you then."

Wu Yu wasn't just talking nonsense; he was confident that once he learned the truth, he would be able to survive this apocalypse thanks to the system.

"Is Wu Yu going to save the world?" Violet blinked her long eyelashes and exclaimed with her mouth wide open.

"No, I just want the two of us to survive. As for what happens to the others, I can't care," Wu Yu said ruthlessly.

If the apocalypse was caused by a particularly powerful creature, then Wu Yu might go back and try to fight it. If he could win, he could fast forward to world peace and everyone would be happy. If he couldn't win, he could go find Phillis and escape to other planes together.

If the apocalypse is something like a cataclysmic flood, then Wu Yu is definitely powerless to stop it. He can only go to Philliss and escape to other planes together.

So in the future, there might be situations where Wu Yu happens to save the world, but that would never be something Wu Yu would do voluntarily.

“If it were my brother, he would do anything to save the world,” Violet emphasized once again.

"I'm no match for Jack." Wu Yu chuckled self-deprecatingly, then looked at Violet and asked casually, "What, are you disappointed in me?"

“No.” Violet shook her head and said without any pretense, “Wu Yu is Wu Yu. He doesn’t need to do the same things as his brother. Rather than making Wu Yu a hero, I would rather Wu Yu live a healthy life. Let others save the world.”

"Haha, that's what I thought too." Wu Yu laughed happily. He was worried that this would be the fuse that caused him and Violet to separate. It's so good that this girl is so understanding.

Watching Violet take his gift and nibble on it like a hamster, her cuteness eased his tension. This emotional crisis was finally over, and once they were out of the house, they could continue living like family.

After resting, Wu Yu had the surviving kobold lead the way to other demon settlements to capture laborers.

The demons haven't reacted yet. For them, the sudden death of demons in some place is actually a very normal occurrence. The elves always have nothing better to do than slaughter demons here.

Exchanging the lives of lower-ranking demons for the sap of the Tree of Life was considered a worthwhile deal by the demon high command. Although the fact that the corpses would be disposed of was unprecedented, they simply instructed their subordinates to be more careful and did not take it to heart.

After using several more waves of attacks, Wu Yu finally managed to open a path leading to the underground.

However, Wu Yu did not reach his true destination.

A kobold dug down with a shovel and touched a hollow spot, from which light then emanated.

"We've made it through! Woof woof!" The kobold cheered, having reached his destination. He thought he would be free.

But before he could rejoice for long, a black vine suddenly shot out from the small hole and pierced through the kobold's right arm.

Immediately, the branches began to retract, pulling the kobold's body back. The kobolds next to him rushed over to help, trying to prevent him from being dragged back. However, compared to the power of the vine, the kobolds' strength was too insignificant, and they were all dragged back.

Fortunately, Wu Yu acted decisively and severed the vine with a single sword strike.

Although it is a plant, it seems to be harder than steel. However, steel is like tofu in front of Wu Yu's Yuan An. Wu Yu only needs to use a little force to cut it in half.

However, the vine continued to sway even after it broke, almost like a living thing, while the kobold whose arm he had pierced was now completely bloodless and shriveled up, resembling a corpse.

Faced with this unknown thing, Wu Yu had no curiosity. Without saying a word, he picked up Violet and ran back. He could cut the vines, but who knew how many of those evil things were left?

Wu Yu felt a tremor beneath his feet, and then countless vines sprouted from the small opening, even helping to widen it.

The dog-headed people, caught off guard, were pierced by the vines, their blood drained in an instant, and then dragged into the hole they had dug.

These vines had no intention of letting Wu Yu go either; after capturing the kobold, they continued to spread towards him.

The vines weren't moving very fast, only a tiny bit faster than Wu Yu. After looking back and confirming that the distance was constantly closing, Wu Yu knew that running was no longer an option.

Wu Yu pointed in Violet's direction and shouted, "Run!"

He then turned around and faced the vines that lunged at him like venomous snakes.

Yuan An was manipulated by Wu Yu, who was thankful for his good equipment. He cut through the vines without stopping, no matter how fiercely they came. Wu Yu's sword dance was so dense that it was impenetrable.
