Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Guardian

"cut."

Without any skill required, it was a lightning-fast slash delivered with all his might, compressing all his fighting spirit before releasing it. This was his most lethal move. Although this simple and brutal technique had no advantages other than its immense power, Marlowe believed that such beings would absolutely not bother to dodge human attacks.

After swinging his sword, Marlowe felt completely unsteady. He chuckled self-deprecatingly. He was known as the Sword Saint among humans, and his martial arts had reached the pinnacle of human skill. But when facing this higher-dimensional being, the most effective method was indeed to swing his sword like a beast. He suddenly felt that he was being incredibly foolish.

There was no sound returned, and apart from feeling that the air currents in the air had become more turbulent, Marlowe had no idea what the result of his sword swing was.

So Marlowe had no choice but to unleash his mental power once more, and then suffered that burning heat again, accompanied by needle-like pain.

It seemed he had failed. Giving up his last shred of hope, Marlowe drew his sword and flew forward.

He knew he might not be able to change anything, but he still had to go. As long as he didn't fight to the last drop of blood, there was still a chance. The word "give up" was not in his life motto.

He was already the strongest among humans, and even he chose to run away. So who can save humanity?

Once Marlowe made up his mind, he transformed into a shooting star and flew towards Virginia.

"Thump."

Marlowe felt as if he had hit a wall, but there were no walls in the world that he couldn't break through.

Was this the thing that blocked his attack just now? Marlowe was too lazy to investigate what the wall was; he just wanted to destroy anything that was blocking him.

His solution was to kill him with a sword.

[The Law of Power - Tenfold Strength]

This is the law that Marlowe comprehended. Its effect is simple and brutal, increasing his power tenfold. Because his swordsmanship has already reached a state of perfection, as long as his defenses can be broken, there is no enemy he cannot kill.

One sword, two swords...

Marlowe has abandoned his once-proud swordsmanship; every strike is an extremely violent slash, and in just one minute, he has completed tens of thousands of swings.

But the wall does not appear to have been destroyed.

His fighting spirit had long been exhausted, and each full-force sword swing had also depleted his physical strength. Furthermore, because the wall was too hard, Marlowe had to withstand a recoil force equivalent to his strength each time. After a minute, his hand was on the verge of collapse.

"Open it for me."

Marlowe let out a roar, frantically squeezing out his strength at this moment. Every organ in his body was groaning, but under that domineering will, they provided the last bit of energy at the cost of their own collapse.

[The Law of Power - A Thousandfold Strength]

Theoretically, the Law of Power allows for the infinite stacking of power, but only if Marlowe's body can withstand it. He has never tried a thousand times the power, and he wants to continue to improve, but this seems to be his true limit.

Marlowe knew that even if he broke through this wall, he would no longer have the strength to fight against Virginia behind him, but at least he wanted to pave a path for future generations.

"Bang."

Marlowe's body was covered in bursting veins, turning him into a blood-soaked mess.

His sword stopped at that spot again. Even though he had attacked it tens of thousands of times and had given it his all, he still couldn't break through that point.

This desperate gamble had exhausted all of Marlowe's strength; he could no longer even keep flying, and his body began to fall helplessly from the sky.

"Is it over?" Marlowe sighed helplessly.

"Marlow, do you regret it?" Suddenly, a voice rang out from the depths of Marlow's heart, as warm as his deceased mother.

“No, I only hate that I am too weak,” Marlowe replied without complaint.

"You've done very well," the voice comforted. "Since you want power, here it is. This is your reward for protecting me."

A tremendous life force rose from Marlowe's body, and the surrounding plants generously contributed their essence, as endless energy began to flow into Marlowe's body.

"Thump."

Marlowe's body slammed heavily to the ground, cracking the earth, yet his body remained unharmed. His hands rose in a grasping motion, as if he held the reins of the world, a reincarnation of power.

The flame on the bronze lamp finally went out, but in an instant a flame rose again, a hundred times brighter than before, and it overshadowed the nine lamps next to it.

"Human, you have been abandoned, and your successor seems to be more capable than you. It seems I am about to lose another friend," the giant sighed. Everyone else had already left, leaving only him and the human waiting for things to fall apart. But what he didn't expect was that the first thing he would receive was the human's dismissal.

"I've only temporarily lost my status as a guardian; I'll still be the one attending the next meeting." The human remained calm.

"All of this is just a final burst of light before the end of an era. Since this fire is as brilliant as a shooting star, it must also be as fleeting as it is."

"Unless Marlowe gains the world's recognition and can shoulder the world's future, he may not be able to obtain the position of World Guardian and then advance to the ninth-order mythology, thus having the power to fight this battle. Otherwise, there is an insurmountable gap between humans and gods. Our virtual authority will be utterly vulnerable in the face of gods."

The giant gazed thoughtfully at the flames dancing freely on the bronze lamp.

······

"This god is just too powerful," Wu Yu, standing at the gate, couldn't help but exclaim.
