Chapter 1 Return

When I woke up again, it was 1998.

The calendar on the wall was clearly visible. She pinched the flesh on her thigh hard. Her daughter, Zhou Xinya, woke up. Her chubby body was wearing a Mickey Mouse gray nightgown. After calming down, she immediately sat up, shrank her neck, and whispered, "I copied the pinyin ten times, and I finished the homework Teacher Lin assigned. I'm too sleepy, so I'm going to sleep..."

Sun Lifang's expression remained unchanged, but her heart was in turmoil. Her fingertips trembled as she grabbed her daughter's hand and asked incredulously, "Teacher Lin?"

Zhou Xinya grew up with her maternal grandparents and only moved to the city at the age of six. In order to catch up on her studies, Sun Lifang hired Lin Zhenzhen, a distant cousin of her husband's friend who had been admitted to a teacher's college.

She thought she would never hear that title again in her life.

Zhou Xinya was startled by her reaction. Knowing her temper, she dared not say a word, quickly changed into her pajamas, and sat in front of the mirror obediently tying her hair.

Sun Lifang got out of bed barefoot and quickly walked to the window. This was a resettlement house provided by her work unit in the 1980s.

The apartment had four bedrooms and two living rooms, and there were newly built buildings behind it. They moved to the 22nd floor.

Later, they had a son and a daughter who went to university, and then the whole family moved into a large villa.

The living room is very close to the hallway, and the neighbors' voices can be heard clearly. She used to not understand Shanghainese.

Sun Lifang was still thinking when a small hand touched the hem of her clothes. Looking down, she saw Zhou Xinya squatting down and placing a pair of woolen slippers for her.

“The ground is cold.” Her daughter pointed to her stomach, a fawning smile on her thin face. “There’s a little brother inside.”

The girl next to him was thin and small, and her pajamas swayed on her body.

Sun Lifang was devastated. She had worked so hard to raise several unruly children, and just when she was finally able to relax a little, she was diagnosed with a terminal illness and was undergoing chemotherapy and biopsies every day.

She accepted being married with a daughter when she transmigrated back to her original state, but who would have thought she'd be pregnant with another child now?

She sighed.

That sigh sent shivers down Zhou Xinya's spine. She didn't dare look up; she had been busy studying all morning, not daring to rest until lunch break.

Was it because you overslept that Mom got angry?

Zhou Xinya didn't give her mother a chance to get angry, cleverly changing the subject: "Mom, Uncle Wang just told you to call him back and not to quit your job so easily." Uncle Wang is her mother's boss.

Resign?

Sun Lifang thought that today "she" resigned from her position as hotel manager, intending to become a full-time housewife.

Her resignation became the catalyst for her later tragedy.
