Chapter 15 Hillbilly

Zhou Dahai ate several steamed buns but still wasn't satisfied, so Sun Lifang used the eggs and scallions on the stove to make him a bowl of fried rice.

Finding a caregiver can't be done quickly, and he's too embarrassed to ask his eldest son for help. The driver is often late with meals, and he often goes hungry because of his big appetite.

How long has it been since he's had a fresh, hot meal? Zhou Dahai couldn't tell if he was truly hungry or just eating out of spite. He kept shoveling food into his mouth, trying to save face and hide his embarrassment and discomfort.

Unexpectedly, his granddaughter's words, "Grandpa, have some water," moved him to tears that streamed down his face.

"I'm so stupid, I'm so stupid!" Zhou Dahai held an enamel cup in one hand and wiped away tears with his rough hands. He couldn't help but think of his youngest son, Zhou Yangyang. He had a son late in life and doted on him, giving him all the best things. He could tolerate his wife's behavior, but he never dreamed that his youngest son could be so heartless.

On the train to Haicheng, food vendors came and went countless times, but he never bought anything for himself or asked if he was hungry.

To say he wasn't attentive, Zhou Yangyang would stay up all night to rush to the city to buy a whole box of shortbread for his wife so she could eat her fill!

Not to mention his mother-in-law, who came empty-handed, and Zhou Yangyang had to buy her milk and cigarettes and deliver them to her home before returning!

He's raised someone else's son after half a lifetime of hard work! His daughter-in-law is right, he's just an unwanted old dog, utterly useless.

Zhou Dahai knew he was being childish, but he couldn't help crying, crying for his miscalculation, his favoritism, and his foolishness.

"Grandpa, don't cry." Zhou Xinya ran over and asked curiously, "Is it because Mom's cooking wasn't good?"

Zhou Dahai shook his head and fell silent.

He began to reflect on the difference in how he treated his two sons. He spoiled one and then neglected the other. Yet, it was his neglected eldest son who was the most filial and married a good wife.

You don't look down on him, and you even provide him with shelter and food. If you put yourself in his shoes, could you do the same?

Besides, he is no longer of any use to me.

“You can stay here for now, and then you’ll live with us in a while,” Sun Lifang said.

Zhou Dahai was taken aback. "Then..."

What would happen if that old woman found out?

Zhou Dahai was filled with worry. The more arrogant he was when he argued with his wife, the more worried he became now, and he was even more afraid of being laughed at.

He'd been afraid of his wife for most of his life, and now that he'd finally found someone gentle, considerate, and loving, what man wouldn't want to be admired?

"My mother-in-law doesn't know yet," Sun Lifang said calmly. "But she'll find out sooner or later. There shouldn't be any secrets between family members, right?"

"Uh-huh."

Zhou Dahai lowered his head guiltily; his daughter-in-law was giving him a warning, and he knew he was in the wrong.

With her daughter by her side, Sun Lifang tidied up the small house a bit. The things inside were scattered in a mess, and the air didn't circulate well.

Zhou Dahai's legs need a systematic examination and he needs to keep up with his nutrition. After thinking for a moment, Sun Lifang picked up her bag.

"Mommy, where are we going?" the little girl asked, blinking her big eyes.

Sun Lifang pushed the wheelchair to the roadside, hailed a Xiali taxi, and said, "To the hospital."

When Sun Lifang woke up this morning, she found a bank card under the water glass on her bedside table, and she knew that Zhou Yunshi had taken her words to heart.

Having gained control of the family finances, Sun Lifang was in an exceptionally good mood.

This is a good omen.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Sun Lifang, with the driver's help, lowered her wheelchair and used the express lane.

Turning around, he saw his daughter at the door, refusing to go inside.

“I’m not sick.” Zhou Xinya pushed her mother’s hand away and whispered, “Medical treatment here is very expensive, and Grandpa also needs to see a doctor.”

Sun Lifang glanced at the queue and waved her medical insurance card: "With this, you don't need to spend any money."

Zhou Xinya took the card and examined it closely. The hospital image printed on it was exactly the same as the building here!

The thought of not having to spend any money immediately made me happy.

The young girl wasn't easily fooled. She watched as Sun Lifang took out her card to make an appointment, and when she got to the front desk, she made a quick "beep" without actually taking out her wallet. Only then did the girl feel safe enough to follow her onto the elevator.

Without spending any money, Sun Lifang gave her a brief description of the insurance benefits.

Zhou Xinya was a little itchy to try it out. Was going to work really this good?

She needs to study hard and find a good job in the future.

Like a mother.

Sun Lifang had no idea that a casual remark she made would have such a huge impact on her daughter.

After registering, the two were asked to sit in the lobby and wait.

After turning a corner, Sun Lifang went upstairs to the hospital payment counter and deposited money into her bank card.

On the way down, my daughter was talking to another girl from a distance through the glass.

The girl was accompanied by her mother, who was wearing a deep red tulle dress and carrying a sequined black bag, and was talking incessantly.

When Sun Lifang came down, the woman had already gone far away.

Zhou Dahai wanted to say something, but his granddaughter pulled him away timidly.

"It's nothing, they just came to ask for directions." Zhou Xinya spoke very quickly, asking what she was doing upstairs. Besides, the waiting number on the screen was almost up to them, so Sun Lifang didn't ask any more questions.

Just as I was about to push the wheelchair away, I heard a chuckle beside me.

"Country bumpkin, country bumpkin, country bumpkin comes to the hospital to collect trash."

Sun Lifang's face darkened. She turned around and saw that the little girl from before had returned, wearing high-heeled sandals. She was laughing and kicking the chair with the tip of her shoe: "Hahaha, you country bumpkin in rags, are you about to get angry and hit me?"

Sun Lifang watched her coldly from the side. The girl's voice grew softer and softer as she subtly retreated to call for help.

The woman beside her, carrying a medical smear bag with a long X-ray film sticking out of it, approached Zhou Xinya with an unfriendly expression and asked in a harsh voice, "What's wrong? Are you trying to bully my daughter?"
