The Rookie Returns: Soaring in the Apocalypse

On the brink of the apocalypse, Zuo Ling is brought back to her distant relatives' Ding family and safely survives countless disasters through the chaos.

However, on the verge of death, s...

Chapter 15 Ding Jiaojiao

After visiting three pharmacies, Zuo Ling bought 150,000 yuan worth of medicine.

I bought medicines from several different stores, each with its own focus, covering almost all common illnesses.

She herself couldn't use that many medicines, and medicines were extremely scarce in the apocalypse, so using them to exchange for needed items was a good idea.

Time flies, and it was already past 3 p.m. when we came out of the last pharmacy.

Hungry and thinking that the delivery should be arriving soon, I didn't bother to eat and drove back to the warehouse.

She arrived just before Liangzi.

There were too many groceries, and it took more than two hours to count and weigh them.

Liangzi had just left when the deliverymen arrived with chickens, ducks, geese, and rabbits.

Then count the items, weigh them, and pay the final amount.

Everyone had left, and the time was 8 p.m.

Zuo Ling only ate one meal a day, in the morning, and her hunger had already subsided.

I stared blankly at the fully stocked shelves for a while until my stomach protested, and I realized I hadn't eaten yet.

Enjoying steaming hot xiaolongbao with braised beef.

After a meal, a slice of watermelon is a delightful and satisfying treat.

I played on my phone for a while, checking various forums for posts related to the apocalypse.

The internet is peaceful, with discussions ranging from which TV series is currently airing to which celebrity has been involved in a scandal.

Zuo Ling found the apocalypse very strange.

The post-apocalyptic novels she had read were mostly filled with signs of impending doom, such as sudden changes in temperature or torrential rain.

In Zuo Ling's memory, there were no signs before the end of the world.

The snow fell like solid ice, instantly covering countless houses, and the temperature plummeted.

Overnight, millions of lives were lost.

Extreme cold arrived, followed by tsunamis, ice storms, earthquakes, hailstorms, polar nights, extreme heat, torrential rains, plagues, acid rain, natural fires, and polar days... a barrage of attacks.

The phone screen shows an incoming call from an unfamiliar number.

"Hello?"

"Hello, are you Zuo Ling?"

A soft, delicate female voice came from the phone.

Zuo Ling's blood froze, her face changed instantly, and she gripped the phone tightly. Ding Jiaojiao!

Damn! That's an unforgettable voice.

"Hello, are you listening?"

Her voice was as sweet as ever, but to Zuo Ling's ears it sounded like a demonic whisper.

Composing herself, Zuo Ling said indifferently, "Yes, who are you?"

"I... I apologize for the intrusion, but I am your half-sister, Ding Jiaojiao."

Zuo Ling gritted her teeth, "Of course I know you are Ding Jiaojiao, my good sister. How could I forget you?"

His tone grew even colder: "Sorry, you've dialed the wrong number. I don't have a sister."

Click, the phone was disconnected.

Ding Jiaojiao's sweet face fell, and she said to the man beside her:

"Hanging up on me? That's outrageous! That's incredibly rude! Illegitimate children just have no manners."

The man was peeling an apple. Hearing this, he paused, then continued peeling the apple as if nothing had happened.

Realizing she had said the wrong thing, Ding Jiaojiao composed herself and playfully took the man's arm.

"Brother, I wasn't talking about you, don't take it to heart."

The man pulled his arm away and said expressionlessly:

"You are a young lady, don't call me, an illegitimate child, your sister, it makes people laugh."

A flash of anger crossed Ding Jiaojiao's face, but she still forced a smile and said:

"I was talking about Zuo Ling, not you, and you're really angry. You've been in the Ding family since you were very young. How can she compare to you? She's just a wild girl with no status."

The man didn't say anything, but put the peeled apple in Ding Jiaojiao's hand, opened the door and left.

Feeling slighted, Ding Jiaojiao angrily threw the apple away.

Hearing the noise behind him, the man's lips curled slightly, his eyes were cold, and he pushed open the door to the room next to Ding Jiaojiao's and strode in.

Zuo Ling's body trembled slightly, the scene of the needle piercing her brain constantly appearing in her dreams, and the pain has not subsided even slightly.

If she didn't achieve her goal, Ding Jiaojiao would call again, but she wasn't in a hurry.

Ding Jiaojiao arrived five days earlier than expected. Zuo Ling cheered herself up and put the goods into the storage space one by one.

Close your eyes and think about what to do next.

Ding Jiaojiao's early arrival prompted Zuo Ling to change her plan to go to the vegetable base to make purchases.

They purchased 30 tons of vegetables at Xinfadi Market, with potatoes and sweet potatoes being the most abundant, each weighing 5 tons.

Potatoes and sweet potatoes can be used as both food and vegetables, are easy to store, and are one of the most common currencies in the end times.

The following vegetables were purchased in 20 tons: winter melon, pumpkin, loofah, carrot, lotus root, garland chrysanthemum, red and white radishes, eggplant, green beans, bitter melon, celery, cucumber, tomato, onion, lettuce, water spinach, rapeseed, romaine lettuce, spinach, leeks, yellow heart cabbage, Chinese cabbage, yam, corn, taro, and seasonings such as scallions, ginger, garlic, millet peppers, cilantro, and shiitake mushrooms.

Total expenditure was 126,000.

Then I went to the fruit section and bought apples, pears, kiwis, bananas, cantaloupes, grapes, peaches, pomelos, oranges, tangerines, mangoes, mangosteens, rambutans, custard apples, and dragon fruit.

Buy more of your favorite fruits, such as kiwifruit, mangosteen, mango, grapes, rambutan, and custard apple.

If you don't like a particular type of fruit, simply increase the variety of fruits you have and stock up on less of them.

Unfortunately, the cherries that Zuo Ling likes are out of season, so there are none available to buy.

With a pained expression, I bought 20 boxes of ridiculously expensive cherries to make up for the shortfall.

The total cost was 100,000.

Dried fruit is too expensive, so Zuo Ling buys only the ones she likes.

A quantity of sunflower seeds, pistachios, cashews, broad beans, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pine nuts, and dried fruits.

Zuo Ling wasn't a snack addict, but she felt quite reluctant to part with the fact that many things would be unavailable in the apocalypse.

After much deliberation, reluctant to buy this or want more of that, I still ended up spending 80,000 yuan.

Looking back, it's both heartbreaking and funny. The most popular items were affordable dried fruits and sunflower seeds that everyone could afford!
