Chapter 48
"No, I'm not leaving, don't even think about it!" Lina kicked Daryl frantically, but her limp limbs were powerless.
Lina wasn't the only one who rebelled, but her rebellion was the most naive and futile.
Daryl carried Lena into the bus himself, and Glenn also got on with Maggie's help. The bus was full of children, and Lena angrily bit Daryl's wrist.
Daryl didn't even flinch, letting Lina vent her anger quietly.
Herschel picked up his bag and got into the car, looking at Daryl with a helpless expression.
Daryl sighed and squeezed Lina's neck, like he was lifting a puppy by the neck. "Be good."
Lina, with tears in her eyes, let go of Daryl, huddled in her seat, and angrily turned to look out the window, refusing to give Daryl another glance.
Daryl sighed helplessly, then looked at Herschel, who smiled and nodded. Daryl felt relieved and got out of the car.
Lena caught a glimpse of Daryl getting out of the car. He said something to Moore, and then the two of them looked at Lena. Lena immediately looked away and glanced around. She saw Beth carrying Judith out the door, and Sophia, Carl, and Dewayne were angrily talking to their parents.
Why did it have to be at this time? Why did she have to be so useless?
Maggie kissed Glenn on the cheek. "Wait for me," she said, and went down to check if Beth was ready.
Glenn smiled as he watched Maggie get out of the car. Herschel sat down next to Lena. "We can't help if we stay; we'll only cause trouble," she said. It was hard to accept, but it was the truth.
"..." Lina knew, but she knew this was the end. If she didn't stay, perhaps...
“What if this is the end?” Lina looked at Herschel. “Aren’t you scared?”
“How could that be?” Herschel looked at Lina gently, patting his knee. “I’m already this old, Lina. Fear has been with me all my life, but I have to learn to accept it. You know, I haven’t done very well, and I still need to work on it.”
"We spend our whole lives learning to accept and be at peace, including with fear. I know it's not easy, but maybe one day..."
【Bang--】
【Bang--】
A violent explosion resounded throughout the prison, blasting a breach in the high walls. Herschel looked outside with concern.
Rick yelled, "Get in the car! Get in the car now!"
There was no time to worry about anything else; he would go as far as he could. He looked at the children who hadn't gotten on the bus yet and quickly ran over to help them onto the bus. Herschel saw this and went to the door to carry the children inside.
Glenn looked out the car window in a panic. Maggie was firing a gun at the attackers outside. It was a chaotic mess. Glenn propped himself up and stood up.
Chaos reigned all around, with everyone frantically fighting back, and almost no one remembered the previous plans.
"Is that little devil's mouth blessed?" The moment he saw the tank, Moore's face turned green.
After a burst of gunfire, the other side asked to talk to Rick.
The driver looked at Herschel, unsure whether he should drive away; there were still children outside who hadn't come up yet…
“I’ll go and bring them up,” Glenn said. Although he looked unwell, he was stronger than Lina; Glenn could stand up and walk a few steps without support.
Herschel nodded. "I'll go with you."
Lina stared longingly as she and a group of children were left in the car. She remembered that the car was killed off by the plot, and everyone inside would die.
"Don't drive," Lina warned, then gritted her teeth, braced herself on the seat, and ran off as well.
At least Herschel and Michonne weren't captured by the other side, so things weren't too bad.
"Why did you get down?" Glenn put the child in his arms into the car and helped Lina up.
“Let’s go, they have tanks, don’t they?” Lina said, using the momentum to straighten her body.
“Rick will handle it,” Glenn said, also somewhat worried, but, “If we leave… he can chase us down in his tanks at will. Here,” Glenn looked around, “he wants this place, and he won’t launch a large-scale attack…”
Lina's heart sank. Sure enough, this old man was all talk and no action. He wouldn't let them leave; in fact, they would be safer staying in prison. But he was doing all this for that little girl. After that little girl died... he would go completely mad.
Prison is no longer their shield.
Moving forward or backward, either way leads to death.
"You go up first," Glenn looked around. He still had to go help, and he didn't feel comfortable leaving Lina alone.
“You go first,” Lina said, pointing to two girls hiding in the corner of the building in the distance: Liz and Mika, along with their father.
Seeing this, Glenn had no choice but to let Lina lean against the car while he discreetly walked over and brought the two children over.
No one knows what happened, but after a short while, the two sides started fighting again. Although the other side had tanks, they were hesitant to fire, and the two sides were evenly matched for a while.
Lina moved to the cell door, where she could see outside.
"Lina!" Amy, who was not far away, looked at her in surprise. "Why haven't you left yet?" Amy fired two shots, dodged, and came to Lina's side. "I'll take you to the car."
“No,” Lina’s mind was in turmoil, “Let’s all leave…” They couldn’t win, but how could they leave? Glenn’s words just now weren’t without reason.
“Lina,” Amy hugged her reassuringly, “Don’t be afraid, everything will be alright.” Amy smiled, “Promise me you’ll get back to the car right away.” Amy grabbed her gun and rushed back to provide support.
Lina looked at the row of people standing in front of the iron fence not far away. From today onwards, they would be scattered and separated, facing life and death.
Herschel pulled Lina close, still carrying Judith's cradle. "Alright, we have to go."
Glenn, along with Liz and Mika, rushed over. Just then, the tanks outside began to bombard them relentlessly. Glenn pushed Lina aside, and stones hit the spot where Lina had just been standing.
"WTF!" Glenn ran ahead in shock to see what had happened.
“Liz, Mika, listen, I need you to take Judith and run towards the car, hurry up, understand?” Herschel handed the basket to Liz and Mika, then went to Larina.
The bombing continued relentlessly, and Herschel had no choice but to pull Lina away and run towards an open area.
The tanks outside crashed through the fence, and they rushed in. "Herschel, don't worry about me, you get in the car first and take care of Judith." Lina watched as Liz and Mika frantically carried Judith. They weren't strong enough, and with the surroundings so chaotic, these children needed Herschel more.
“No,” Herschel glanced around; they were not far away, and there was still time.
The incessant bombardment made Lina shake her head in pain. The noise behind her was extraordinary; they had already stormed in, and Lina even saw walkers lurking around.
"Herschel!" Lina shoved him away with all her might. The shards of glass pierced Lina's leg, which, to be honest, was surprisingly refreshing.
Lina gritted her teeth and stood up. Adrena, it's your turn to work hard.
"Are you alright?" Herschel quickly stood up and grabbed Lina's hand, but Lina pushed his hand away. "Listen, don't worry about me," Lina looked at the walkers not far behind her. "I won't leave. Tell them to drive carefully and take good care of the children." After Lina finished speaking, she pushed Herschel, who looked at her helplessly, but Lina had already drawn her long knife and was using her strength to kill the walkers.
Herschel looked at the bus; the flustered driver had already started the engine, but Liz and the others hadn't boarded yet!
Herschel quickly ran over and took Judith's basket. Liz and Mika rushed over and stopped the car. Just as they reached out to take Judith's basket, Herschel felt a sharp pain in his shoulder. Judith's basket fell to the ground, and she cried out in terror.
Lina glanced at her pistol; it was fully loaded, but it was her only one.
She saw the walker lunge at Daryl. Lina stood up and dealt with the walker. The people who were shooting at Daryl noticed Lina and turned their guns on her. Lina crouched down and rolled, hiding behind a pile of rubble.
Fortunately, Daryl quickly distracted them. Lena peeked out and saw the bus drive away, Liz and Mika dragging Judith's basket a short distance away, while Herschel, clutching his shoulder, was leading the children to safety.
Footsteps sounded beside Lina, and a man and a woman walked towards Liz and the others with guns. Tercy charged forward with her gun, but was quickly shot and forced to hide. Lina shot and killed the man. Just when she thought she was going to die, the woman was shot dead by Liz.
Before Lina could reach the children, she was pushed further and further away from them by the walkers.
Lina saw Tercy. With Tercy there, everything should be alright. Everything should be alright.
Lena mechanically slashed at the walkers with her knife. She heard a loud bang and looked in the direction of the sound. Daryl had blown up the tank.
If it weren't for the inappropriate occasion, Lina would have loved to whistle; her country bumpkin was so cool.
Lena saw Beth and Daryl retreat into the woods on the other side, and Andrea dragging Amy away from the graveyard. She leaned against the wall, watching blankly as the walkers slowly took over the place.
A moment later, Lina heard Daryl's voice, "Lina!" Lina saw Daryl and Beth running towards her.
"No! Don't come any closer, get out of here!" More and more zombies were appearing. Lina waved them away, and then ran to the other side along the cracked iron net.
Daryl and Beth, their steps halted by the walkers, watched Lina's stumbling figure and had no choice but to leave.
Lina felt like she was about to faint. The zombies in the forest had been attracted by the loud noise from the prison, but Lina had to hold on to avoid becoming someone's meal.
Suddenly feeling like she'd taken Andrea's script after the farm fell, Lena thought to herself, looking at a giant tree and the scattered zombies around her.
After dealing with the six zombies, Lina leaned against a tree and slid down to sit. Now was not the time to be disgusted or not. Lina pulled a zombie corpse over herself and covered herself with it before passing out.
Her adrenaline was pumping.
The leaves rustled in the forest, so quiet that no animal sounds could be heard; the sound of branches snapping underfoot was exceptionally clear.
