Unmarried Men and Women: Daily Life of Raising Children in Ancient Times

Mu Yi'an, a teacher at an agricultural school, in her thirties, unmarried, nearly expelled from her family by her biological mother.

Jiang Shuyun, a high school political teacher, in her ...

Chapter 6 Mu Yi'an's IQ Returns

The beds in ancient times were quite wide. Mu Yi'an lay in the middle, with the sleeping little girl inside and Jiang Zhonglin outside.

Perhaps she was tired, or perhaps she had resigned herself to her fate, Mu Yi'an fell asleep in no time. What was most enviable about her was her sleep; she could fall asleep almost instantly upon touching the bed.

Jiang Shuyun listened to Mu Yi'an's steady breathing and felt quite envious. He suffered from insomnia and usually needed sleeping pills to fall asleep. But there were no sleeping pills here!

Emptying his mind and closing his eyes, Jiang Shuyun counted the rhythm of Mu Yi'an's breathing in his mind. Before he knew it, he had drifted off to sleep. He had no recollection of when he fell asleep.

"Waaah..."

"Yi'an, Mu Yi'an, wake up, the baby is crying."

"It's so noisy! What are you making all this noise in the middle of the night? I'll sue you for disturbing the peace!"

Mu Yi'an, who was sleeping soundly, was woken up. She scratched her head with both hands and shouted quite loudly.

"Mu Yi'an, wake up! Jiang Mu Shi, the child is crying."

Mu Yi'an stared ahead with her eyes open. The room was pitch black, and she couldn't see anything. The baby's whimpering beside her made her momentarily stunned before she snapped back to reality and remembered her current situation.

"Light up."

Mu Yi'an reached under the child and touched him; sure enough, the child was wet with urine.

Jiang Shuyun lit the candle with a tinderbox, because he was a scholar and they had candles in their room instead of oil lamps.

By the candlelight, Mu Yi'an quickly changed the baby's diaper. The little one, now comfortable, slowly stopped sobbing and began to reach out to touch Mu Yi'an; he was hungry.

"Take the diaper out, I'll breastfeed the baby."

"Okay, okay."

Jiang Shuyun went out and, by the moonlight, washed the baby's diapers and hung them to dry on the rack outside their door.

"If he falls asleep, will he wake up again? How many times does a child wake up during the night?"

"It usually only happens once, so she shouldn't wake up again. She's full. The original owner of this body doesn't look fat, but she has a good amount of breast milk. It really proves the saying that the thinner and more slender a person is, the more breast milk they have, and the fatter a person is, the less breast milk they have."

After Mu Yi'an finished speaking, she lay down and continued to sleep, feeling sleepy and very tired.

"I'm so envious! That sleep quality is amazing!"

Jiang Shuyun also lay down and counted sheep in her mind. When she counted more than 1,900 sheep, she felt sleepy and fell asleep without realizing it.

When I woke up the next day, it was already light. I had no cell phone, no clock, and no idea what time it was.

"Jiang Shuyun, I won't go out for the next couple of days. Just tell them I still have a headache and need to sort out my thoughts and understand my surroundings."

"Okay, I understand. I'll talk to them."

Jiang Shuyun felt much more at ease seeing Mu Yi'an calm down, after all, the two of them were now in the same boat.

After changing her clothes, Jiang Shuyun walked out of the inner room and first went to check on the two boys' room, but they were still asleep.

Recalling the original owner's memories, there was nothing particularly special. Every day after washing up, he would read books, a complete bookworm, single-mindedly focused on passing the imperial examinations. He was hardworking enough, but his mind was a bit slow and his vision was somewhat narrow.

Jiang Shuyun has a habit of exercising in the morning. He lives alone most of the year, and his housekeeper doesn't live in the house. He needs to maintain his health to avoid collapsing in the house at any time without anyone knowing.

Searching my memory, I found that this dynasty had a similar exercise called Baduanjin.

"Shuyun, what are you practicing?"

Jiang's father also got up and looked at Jiang Zhonglin gesturing in the yard, asking curiously.

"Father, all is well!"

"Did you learn this at the academy?"

"Yes, sitting and reading all the time makes my body a bit stiff. I learned this from my classmates."

Jiang Shuyun answered cautiously, unsure if she was saying it correctly. In her memory, the original owner of this body hardly ever interacted with her family.

"That's good. Exams also require physical strength."

Jiang's father didn't pay much attention anymore. He left the courtyard and went to the fields. Every morning, he would walk along the country paths to clear his mind.

“Mother, Yi’an is still dizzy and can’t go out to work for the next few days. I’ll have to trouble my sister-in-law and brother’s wife.”

"It's alright, we're family, no need to make a fuss. My second daughter-in-law wasn't deliberately being lazy, she was just injured."

Jiang's mother is definitely an enlightened mother-in-law, really, she would never mistreat her daughter-in-law.

After breakfast, Jiang's sister-in-law and her husband cleaned up the kitchen. The older children had gone to school, and even Jiang Shuyun's four-year-old son had started his early education. Only the children under four years old remained at home, cared for by Jiang's mother.

From the school next door, the children's innocent voices could be heard reading aloud, causing passing villagers to slow their pace so as not to disturb the children's reading.

In this era, scholars were highly respected because they were so rare.

Jiangjia Village has more than 100 households and more than 1,000 people. A few of them are educated, but only two households have passed the imperial examinations.

One is the Wang family, which produced a Jinshi (a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations) more than ten years ago, and he is now serving as an official elsewhere. The other is the Jiang family, father and son, with two Xiucai (successful candidates in the county-level imperial examinations) and one Tongsheng (successful candidate in the lowest level of the imperial examinations).

Jiang Xiucai opened the school in recent years; before that, he had been studying and preparing for the provincial examinations. Unfortunately, he failed the exams three times in a row, and being too old, he gave up on the imperial examinations and opened the school.

"Oh my, the Jiang family has risen to prominence. With two scholars in the family, the women in the family are all enjoying a life of luxury. A few years ago, the scholar's wife had to work in the fields, but she doesn't have to these days, and she looks much younger."

"That's right. I don't expect my two grandsons to pass the imperial examinations. I just hope they can learn some characters from the scholar and find a job in the county town. I'll be all set."
