Chapter 9 One Against Three

“I don’t want to apologize for what happened today, but I still need to make things clear. First, I didn’t seduce Zhao Sibao; we just happened to meet and were on the same bus back together, that’s all. Second, I never intended to marry into your Zhao family. Once is enough. Third, your mother-in-law and husband bullying you is your family matter, your own problem. Don’t blame others. Making things up and distorting the truth will only bring you more trouble. And you, you’re pretty, but you’re brainless. It’s a pity your parents gave you such a good name.” Tian Yu pointed at them and said. The three of them sat on the ground, all looking dazed, especially Zhao Jinxiu, who seemed to be still daydreaming. Tian Yu looked back at Chen Chong behind her, rolled her eyes, and thought, “Women are all the same, it seems there’s no point in saying anything now.” After tidying up the clothes on the ground, Chen Chong picked up the wooden basin and strode back. Tian Yu looked at the three of them still sitting there, shook her head, pulled Tangyuan along, and followed Chen Chong.

After arriving home, Tian Yu went back to her room to change her clothes. When she came out, Chen Chong had already helped her hang her clothes to dry. Looking at the changed Chen Chong, Tian Yu felt a little awkward and didn't know how to speak for a moment. After thinking for a while, she said, "Brother Chen seems a little different today."

"Don't you like things clean?" Chen Chong said somewhat shyly.

"Oh, when did I say that? I didn't know that."

"When you were disciplining Zhao Sibao yesterday, didn't you complain that he was dirty?"

"Ah, that's nonsense. Besides, how can he compare to Brother Chen?"

"Then you don't like how I am now."

"I like it! It looks really good, and it makes me look much more energetic!" Tian Yuzhen couldn't help but take a second look. His messy hair had turned into smooth black hair that hung down to his waist. Paired with his strong features, deep, dark, and bright eyes, and tall and imposing figure, he was indeed a rare handsome man.

“Uncle Chen looks much better now, Mom. Doesn’t he look like the chivalrous hero you told me about yesterday?” Tangyuan asked, seemingly appearing out of nowhere.

"Like, like a great knight-errant," Tian Yu said, pinching Tangyuan's nose.

Chen Chong was very happy to see that Tian Yu liked it, but he had been worried that she wouldn't like him doing this. Yesterday, when he got back, he thought about what she had said to Zhao Sibao, and then looked at himself, but he had been busy all night to get ready.

Tian Yu asked Tang Yuan why he went to the river to look for her, and Tang Yuan began to tell her all about how he went to find Uncle Chen, how he was frightened by Uncle Chen's appearance, and how Uncle Chen said he was going to look for her because he was worried that she hadn't returned for so long. So the two of them went to the river to check, but when they arrived at the river, they found her being bullied. Fortunately, Uncle Chen had martial arts skills and saved her.

It was almost noon, so Tian Yu and Tang Yuan invited Chen Chong to have lunch with them. Tian Yu checked that the dough she had kneaded that morning had risen. She finished processing the leftover wild vegetables and chopped the pork she had bought yesterday, then mixed it with oil, salt, and soy sauce. While Tian Yu was cooking, Tang Yuan and Chen Chong were also busy. They peeled the outer skin off the garlic cloves they had bought yesterday and sorted them by size. The two sat in the yard, chatting and laughing. After preparing the filling, they started kneading the dough again. Soon, a batch of buns was ready. They called Chen Chong to help start the fire and steamed one batch first. Chen Chong watched the fire while Tang Yuan followed her, learning how to wrap buns. Once the first batch was done, Tang Yuan couldn't wait and tasted one, nodding vigorously in praise of how delicious it was. Chen Chong didn't eat any, saying they would eat together after she finished wrapping the rest. They steamed two batches in total. After the buns were steamed, they simply tossed the pork liver they had cooked yesterday with garlic and chili peppers and served it as a cold dish. Tian Yu felt this was the most she had eaten here. Although the seasonings were limited, the slight bitterness of the wild vegetables mixed with the pork made for a very delicious flavor. Tang Yuan was so full that she patted her belly and said she wanted more. Chen Chong also ate happily, one after another, countless times. The three of them ate a whole pot of steamed buns together, and even finished the cold pork liver salad.

After lunch and a short rest, Chen Chong and Tangyuan went back to the yard to chop garlic. Tian Yu looked around the yard, found some farm tools, and prepared to turn over the soil. Spring was approaching, and soon they could plant some vegetables. Knowing her intention, Chen Chong took the tools, letting Tangyuan chop the garlic while he turned the soil. Tian Yu didn't refuse and worked with Tangyuan on the garlic, occasionally glancing up at Chen Chong, who would also occasionally look up at them. Whenever their eyes met, they would exchange a knowing smile before quickly returning to their work. On a whim, Tian Yu taught Tangyuan a poem, "Sympathy for the Peasants": "Hoeing the fields at midday, sweat drips onto the soil. Who knows that every grain in the bowl is the result of hard work?" Tangyuan didn't disappoint Tian Yu; after explaining it once and reciting it a few times with him, he memorized it. The warm afternoon sun made everyone feel cozy and warm, and their hearts warmed as well. Everything was so peaceful and serene; they truly hoped that life would always be this warm.
