“I’m sorry, Your Majesty, Field Marshal Wolfgang still requests an audience with you,” came Bowerman’s voice from outside the door.
Bowerman, who had come in person, was also feeling helpless. Around 11 o'clock, he suddenly received a message from his subordinates saying that Wolfgang had requested to see the Emperor. So he went to meet with Wolfgang and asked him what was wrong.
Wolfgang kept dodging the question, repeatedly saying that he needed to meet with the Emperor. Although the Emperor had just refused, Wolfgang still refused to leave, saying that he needed to ask again. Left with no other choice, Bowerman had to come over in person.
Now, with a creak, the heavy door opened from the inside out, and Von Palen's cold face appeared before Bowerman.
He quickly took a step back and said, "I apologize, Your Majesty, for disturbing you so late, Field Marshal Wolfgang..."
Before he could finish speaking, Von Palen coldly pushed Bowerman aside and strode out, asking in a chilling voice:
Where is he now?
Bowerman quickly followed: "He's in the meeting room on the first floor. I don't know why he came to see you so late..."
Von Palen ignored him and strode forward.
A moment later, Von Palen walked to the first-floor corridor. A few meters away, he saw Wolfgang standing with his back to him in front of the window of the reception room at the end of the corridor, looking out into the smoke.
"Wolfgang!" von Palen shouted, but Wolfgang did not turn around.
"Wolfgang!" After von Palen called out again, Wolfgang turned around and hurriedly took the pipe out of his mouth and extinguished the tobacco.
"What do you need me for now?" Feng Palen asked coldly as he strode over.
“Um… Your Majesty… it’s about… something that’s going to happen next…” Wolfgang stammered, as if he hadn’t prepared what to say beforehand.
Meanwhile, Bowerman frowned deeply. Wolfgang's behavior tonight was quite unusual, which aroused his suspicion. He kept scanning Wolfgang with his eyes.
"Let's go inside and talk." Von Palen glanced at the bewildered Wolfgang, said this coldly, and walked towards the reception room. Wolfgang quickly followed, whispering as they went:
"Your Majesty, please grant me a private conversation..."
Von Palen raised an eyebrow but did not respond. Wolfgang also said nothing more, lowered his head, and followed closely behind. The two entered the conference room, and Bowerman quickly followed.
But as soon as Bowerman stepped into the room, von Palen turned around and said, "Get out."
Bowerman was taken aback: "Your Majesty, are you referring to me?"
"Is there anyone else here? Do you want Wolfgang to leave so I can talk to you?" Von Palen said in a deep voice as he pulled out a chair and sat down.
“Um… Your Majesty, but I need to provide you with…” Bowerman began, but von Palen interrupted him impatiently:
"It's just Wolfgang and me here. Are there any assassins? Do you think I'm in danger here?"
Wolfgang stood motionless beside the chair, still holding the pipe that was not yet completely extinguished.
“No, Your Majesty, that’s not what I meant…” Bowerman quickly explained.
"Alright, go out." Von Palen waved his hand.
“Yes, Your Majesty.” Bowerman said no more, but gave Wolfgang a deep look before turning and leaving the conference room, closing the door behind him.
A few seconds later.
"Don't stand at the door and eavesdrop!"
“I know you’re out there, Bowerman, get away from me.”
Upon hearing the cold shout from inside the door, Bowerman, whose ear was pressed against the door, felt a chill run down his spine. He helplessly touched his nose, tiptoed away from the conference room without a sound.
Inside the meeting room, von Palen placed his hands on the table, looked at the silent Wolfgang, and said:
"Sit down, Wolfgang."
"Yes, Your Majesty," Wolfgang replied softly before sitting down in his chair, facing von Palen across the table.
"Now that it's just us, what could be so urgent for you to contact me, Wolfgang?"
Wolfgang was about to speak when von Palen interrupted him by extending a hand towards him:
"Don't rush to answer. I hope you can organize your thoughts before you speak. Right now, you seem distracted and clearly out of sorts. You're having an emotional problem."
"Once you've calmed down, you can explain why you've come."
“We have all night to talk.”
"I'm sorry, Your Majesty, I..." Looking at the calm-faced von Palen, Wolfgang was overwhelmed with mixed feelings. He finally sighed and shut his mouth.
Von Palen seemed unconcerned, and he tapped the table lightly: "You can smoke, I know it will relieve your stress."
Upon hearing this, Wolfgang nodded, silently picked up his pipe, and blew out the remaining embers.
A few minutes later, a light mist filled the meeting room, which somewhat obstructed von Palen's view, so Wolfgang finally lowered his eyes and spoke:
"Your Majesty, if we continue to commit large numbers of troops to the war, we may not be able to hold out..."
As he said this, he cautiously glanced at Von Palen's face, but Von Palen remained calm after hearing this, showing no anger as usual.
“I’m listening, go on.” Von Palen tapped the table with his index finger.
