Chapter 137 Arriving Home
Beijing Railway Station
Finally, she got off the train. The day and night journey had left Gu Yihan completely exhausted.
Lu Huailin waited at the exit, carrying luggage in one hand and holding his listless wife's hand in the other.
A gust of cold wind made him shiver.
Worried that Gu Yihan might get cold, Lu Huailin deftly opened his luggage.
He took out a women's military coat and draped it over Gu Yihan's shoulders, asking, "Wife, are you cold?"
Gu Yihan touched the military overcoat and looked at Lu Huailin with a puzzled expression: "Aren't you cold? Did you change into this women's military overcoat?"
Lu Huailin nodded and hummed in agreement.
“If you’re cold, just say so. We’ll have to wait a while before my brother comes to pick us up.”
Gu Yihan nodded without saying anything. It was really cold here; even her breath was white.
Not long after
A military jeep stopped in front of the two of them. Lu Huailin opened the car door and let Gu Yihan get in first.
Lu Huaixu, in the driver's seat, glared at Lu Huailin, who had just gotten into the car. "You're really something, kid."
"I haven't been home to see my parents for several years. If my sister-in-law hadn't gotten pregnant, would I still be going home this year?"
Lu Huailin rolled his eyes at his older brother: "Mom and Dad don't want to see me."
As he drove, Brother Lu retorted, "Isn't it all because you've been refusing to get married..."
Suddenly remembering that Gu Yihan was sitting behind him, he swallowed the rest of his words.
Lu Huailin looked at his older brother Lu smugly and said, "I have a wife now."
Lu Family
Lu's mother paced back and forth in the living room, muttering to Lu's father on the sofa, "I wonder if Huailin's wife is adapting to the weather here."
"Don't catch a cold after you get off the bus, the temperature has suddenly dropped again these past few days."
Mr. Lu put down his newspaper and looked at Mrs. Lu, who was pacing back and forth: "Didn't you dislike the wife Huailin found?"
Mrs. Lu glared at Mr. Lu and said unhappily, "Who told you that I don't like it?"
"So you gave a separate dowry to your eldest daughter-in-law, but you didn't mention giving a dowry to your younger daughter-in-law?"
Lu's mother looked at Lu's father with disdain: "Am I stupid?"
"Of course I should hand over the betrothal gifts to my daughter-in-law in a proper and open manner."
"That way, she can remember my feelings and know that it was given to her by me."
Mr. Lu was both amused and exasperated. “It’s all the same. You can give it to Huailin, or have him give it to Gu Yihan.”
Lu's mother looked at Lu's father with disdain: "Of course they're different."
"I'm telling you, you're a roughneck, you wouldn't understand. How would you know the little thoughts of us women?"
"Crunch."
When Lu's mother heard the door open, she thought it was Lu Huailin and the others returning, and walked out happily.
His smile faded when he saw that it was his eldest daughter-in-law, Fang Yi.
"Mom, my sister-in-law hasn't arrived home yet."
Fang Yi greeted Mr. Lu, who was sitting on the sofa, with a smile.
Turning to Lu's mother, he said, "Mom, has Aunt He finished cooking? I'm hungry."
Lu's mother glanced at Fang Yi indifferently: "We'll eat when Huailin and the others are back."
Fang Yi's eyes flashed with displeasure, but she smiled and said, "Then I'll go upstairs and rest for a while."
Mother Lu gave a faint "hmm".
After Fang Yi went up to the second floor, she passed by Lu Huailin's room and saw that everything in the room had been completely renovated.
He scoffed, "She's just a country bumpkin. Only her mother-in-law is going after her. Who knows if she even appreciates it?"
downstairs
Lu's mother kept her ears perked up, listening to the sounds outside, and heard the car at the gate of the yard.
"Old Lu, hurry, your youngest son is back." After saying that, Lu's mother walked out.
Watching his wife's departing figure, Mr. Lu sat on the sofa, unmoved, muttering under his breath, "What kind of elders greet their juniors?"
Lu Huailin was helping Gu Yihan out of the car when he saw Lu's mother come out.
He took his wife's hand and walked up to Lu's mother, proudly saying, "Mom, look at this, this is your wife."
The moment Lu's mother saw Gu Yihan, she took a liking to her: "Fair skin, double eyelids, big eyes."
Feeling embarrassed, Gu Yihan called out, "Mom."
Upon hearing this, Lu's mother was delighted. She stepped forward, pushed Lu Huailin aside, and warmly took Gu Yihan's arm.
He asked with concern, "Oh, my daughter-in-law is so beautiful."
I reached out and touched the hand inside the military hospital; it was warm.
Lu Huailin and his elder brother looked at each other and both saw disdain in each other's eyes.
Gu Yihan was overwhelmed by Lu's mother's enthusiasm.
She even imagined many scenes in her mind of her wicked mother-in-law mocking, looking down on her, and rolling her eyes at her.
Who knows, what kind of wonderful old lady is she, so warm and welcoming?
Mr. Lu sat solemnly on the sofa, waiting for Mrs. Lu to bring her youngest daughter-in-law to greet him.
Who knew that Lu's mother would lead Gu Yihan right past him, as if they were going upstairs?
"Cough, cough, cough,"
Upon hearing the sound, Gu Yihan turned around and looked at Lu's father on the sofa, then looked at Lu's mother with a puzzled expression and asked, "Mom."
After noticing the look in Lu's father's eyes, Lu's mother pointed at Lu's father sitting on the sofa.
With a smile, he introduced, "That's Lu Huailin's father."
Father Lu: "..."
Lu Huailin and his elder brother, who had just entered the door, also stared at their mother with speechless expressions.
Gu Yihan was stunned and extremely embarrassed. She glanced at Lu Huailin and then said to Lu's father, "Dad."
Mr. Lu, accustomed to his high position, tried to force a smile, but ultimately gave up and simply hummed in agreement.
Lu's mother glared at Lu's father, then said softly to Gu Yihan, "Come on, Mom has something for you."
Gu Yihan didn't think too much about it and followed Lu's mother to the bedroom.
She sat on the bed, observing the furnishings in the room, which were all clearly new.
A moment later, Lu's mother came in carrying a box.
Lu's mother handed the box to Gu Yihan and said with a smile, "We didn't give any betrothal gifts when you married Huailin."
"We'll make it up to you all while you're back."
Gu Yihan looked at the box in front of her and refused, saying, "Mom, Huailin has already given the betrothal gifts."
Lu's mother was very satisfied with Gu Yihan's attitude.
She's not easily swayed, unlike her eldest daughter-in-law, Fang Yi, who used to practically glue her eyes to the box.
Lu's mother placed the box directly on Gu Yihan's lap.
He smiled and said, "What Huailin gave me was his own heartfelt gift."
"We are giving our heartfelt gifts."
Gu Yihan looked at the box on her lap with a troubled expression; it was quite heavy and probably contained a lot of things.
Looking at her daughter-in-law's expression, Lu's mother laughed.
He explained, "Your sister-in-law has one too. Our family treats all daughters-in-law equally; we can't let her have one and you not."
Knowing she couldn't refuse, Gu Yihan could only smile and reply, "Mom, thank you."
After saying that, he casually placed the box on the dressing table.
Fang Yi was about to go to the restroom when she passed by Lu Huailin's bedroom and found the door closed.
After hearing the noise inside, she pushed the door open and entered, her eyes scanning Gu Yihan, who was sitting on the bed, up and down.
A flicker of jealousy flashed in her eyes, and she thought to herself, "Pah, she has such a vixen-like face."
"No wonder he bewitched Lu Huailin so completely."
Mother Lu's face turned cold: "Didn't you know to knock before coming in?"
Fang Yi said nonchalantly, "Mom, we're all family, why would we need to knock on the door?"
Gu Yihan glanced at Fang Yi, who hated people with no sense of boundaries the most.
"This must be your sister-in-law. I'm your sister-in-law. No wonder your brother-in-law insisted on marrying you; you're really beautiful," Fang Yi said exaggeratedly.
Lu's mother was so angry she laughed: "If you can't speak properly, then shut up."
