Chapter 132 Cloth Tickets
The next morning
Gu Yihan opened her eyes, took out her watch from under her pillow, and saw that it was only 6 o'clock.
Hearing footsteps in the yard, Grandma Gu must have gotten up.
I put on my clothes and walked to the washbasin stand in the yard. The sound of ping-pong came from the kitchen.
While washing up, she called out to the kitchen, "Grandma, why didn't you sleep a little longer?"
After hearing Gu Yihan's voice in the kitchen, Grandma Gu raised her voice and said, "Grandma is getting old and doesn't sleep that much anymore."
After Gu Yihan finished washing up, she went into the kitchen, took out a bowl from the cupboard, and reached out to take over the work from her hands.
Grandma Gu quickly blocked with her arm, anxiously saying, "Don't reach out your hand."
"I've already cooked the congee, and I've also boiled an egg for you."
Gu Yihan paused, looking at Grandma Gu with a puzzled expression, and asked, "Grandma, we have plenty of eggs at home, why did you only boil one?"
Grandma Gu looked at Gu Yihan and smiled, saying, "Grandma doesn't like eggs, but you work hard, so I'll give them to you."
Gu Yihan looked at the other person's weathered face and felt a pang of sadness.
She stepped forward, put her arm around Grandma Gu's shoulder, and whispered, "Grandma, we don't need any eggs."
"We also raise a few chickens at home, which lay eggs every day. From now on, everyone in our family will have to eat an egg every morning. There can be no exceptions."
Grandma Gu looked at Gu Yihan's fair face, opened her mouth, but said nothing.
Gu Yihan took the spoon from her hand, picked up the porridge pot, and said in a relaxed tone, "Grandma, don't worry, your granddaughter can support you."
After saying that, he walked through the yard and went straight back to the living room, placing the porridge pot on the dining table.
After the two were seated, Gu Yihan began serving the porridge. She placed the first bowl in front of Grandma Gu and then served herself a bowl.
He put the peeled egg into Grandma Gu's bowl before picking up the bowl to drink the porridge.
Grandma Gu glanced at the egg in the bowl, then looked up at her granddaughter drinking porridge.
My heart ached terribly; even my own son looked down on me for being a freeloader.
After breakfast, Gu Yihan took out a spare key to the courtyard and handed it to Grandma Gu.
She instructed, "Grandma, if you get tired of staying at home, go out for a walk."
"But we must cook lunch. We have everything at home, so there's no need to be frugal."
Gu Yihan was worried that her grandmother was used to being frugal and would be reluctant to eat lunch, so she would eat together in the evening.
Grandma Gu took the keys, as happy as a child: "I understand."
Only after having the house key did she feel at ease; Gu Yihan didn't treat her as a burden.
Textile factory
As soon as Gu Yihan stepped into the office, Sister Min took her arm and asked in a low voice, "Xiaohan, do you have any extra cloth coupons?"
Gu Yihan looked at Sister Min with a puzzled expression and asked curiously, "What's wrong? Are you short of cloth coupons?"
Minjie looked at Gu Yihan shyly and said, "It's my younger sister's wedding, and she wants to make a few more clothes to make a good impression."
Gu Yihan certainly had cloth coupons; she had kept all the cloth coupons she had received over the years.
But my family will soon have four people, and I can't possibly lend out my cloth coupons.
Gu Yihan looked embarrassed and said, "Sister Min, I'm really sorry, my grandma came yesterday."
“She doesn’t have any winter clothes yet, and the family’s cloth ration coupons are needed to make clothes for my grandma.”
Minjie exclaimed in surprise, "Ah..., your grandma's here?"
Gu Yihan withdrew her arm, walked to her seat, and then replied, "Yes."
Minjie thought that the grandmother Gu Yihan mentioned was her husband's. "Your husband's family is really strange. You've never met your mother-in-law before."
"You met their grandmother first."
Gu Yihan paused, holding the pen, realizing that Sister Min had misunderstood.
She laughed: "It's not my lover, it's my grandmother."
Min-jie stared wide-eyed at Gu Yi-han, stammering, "You...your grandma?"
Gu Yi nodded at Min Jie's funny expression without saying a word.
It's estimated that Su Yonghong had something to do at home today and didn't come, and they didn't receive any notice of leave from him.
However, Sister Min paced anxiously back and forth in the office all morning.
She kept muttering, "Something must have happened to Sister Su."
Gu Yihan's head was throbbing from all the walking around, and she couldn't help but ask, "Sister Min, are you overthinking this?"
Minjie said in a sharp voice, "Impossible, Xiaohan, you haven't been at the textile factory for long, you don't know about Sister Su's family situation."
Gu Yihan thought about it and realized that in the months she had been here, Su Yonghong had never mentioned anything about his family.
She hesitated, glancing at Sister Min, "If you're worried, why don't you just have someone from the neighborhood committee go and check on her?"
When it was time to leave work, Gu Yihan packed her bag, stood up, and was just about to leave.
Min-jie stopped her: "Xiao-han, would you like to come with me to Sister Su's house?"
Gu Yihan was stunned. She looked at Sister Min with suspicion and asked uncertainly, "You want me to go to Sister Su's house with you?"
Minjie looked at Gu Yihan expectantly and nodded quickly.
Gu Yihan was speechless. Who was this person?
She's been here for so long, and Su Yonghong has never talked about family matters in front of her; she definitely doesn't want too many people to know.
Gu Yihan refused directly, saying, "No, I'm going to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy things for my grandma, so I won't bother Sister Su."
He said he wouldn't give the other person a chance to speak, and simply pushed the door open and walked out.
Gu Yihan rode her bicycle to the supply and marketing cooperative, parked it, and went straight to the fabric counter after entering.
The sales clerk was a perceptive, round-faced girl. She asked warmly, "Comrade, what color fabric do you want?"
"I want ten feet of navy blue cloth."
After Gu Yihan finished speaking, she took out two 5-foot cloth coupons and three yuan and handed them to the other party.
After counting the money and tickets, the sales clerk deftly cut out 10 feet of cloth and handed it to Gu Yihan.
After leaving the supply and marketing cooperative, Gu Yihan had ten feet of cloth, two cans of food, two catties of cotton, and a catty of brown sugar.
Back in the courtyard, I parked my bicycle.
She carried the things to Grandma Gu's bedroom, and then took out the malted milk powder that Lu Huailin had bought last time from her storage space and put it on the bedside table.
Back in the living room, there were cooked dumplings on the dining table.
Grandma Gu set out the chopsticks and smiled at Gu Yihan, saying, "Sit down and eat quickly."
"My neighbor Aunt Chen gave me some zucchini today, and I made dumplings with them."
After sitting down, Gu Yihan ate a dumpling under Grandma Gu's watchful gaze.
She then gave a thumbs-up and praised, "Grandma, your dumplings are still so delicious."
When Grandma Gu heard her granddaughter's praise, her face lit up with a smile, thinking to herself that she was still useful.
While eating dumplings, Gu Yihan said, "Grandma, I bought you some cloth and cotton. Take some time to make yourself some clothes."
"Eat what's on the cabinet first."
"I'll ask where I can order milk when your grandson-in-law gets back."
"From now on, the three of us in the family will each have a glass, and we'll all need to make sure we get enough nutrition."
Grandma Gu ate her dumplings, her rough hands secretly wiping away tears. She didn't say anything, just kept nodding.
She knew that Gu Yihan was saying this on purpose because she felt sorry for her.
