Chapter 85 The Seat-Giving Controversy
next day
Gu Yihan got up early, went to the kitchen to boil an egg and cook some porridge. After eating breakfast, she changed into a puffy dress.
She is going to the city today to send money to Grandma Gu.
When Wang Erya saw Gu Yihan, she walked to her side and suddenly said, "Commander Lu's wife, be careful of Qi Yanran."
Gu Yihan turned her head to look at Wang Erya: "Who are you?"
Wang Erya said self-deprecatingly, "I am the rural wife Wang Erya that the military wives are talking about, the one who supposedly used improper means to get close to Battalion Commander Wen."
Gu Yihan: "..."
Regardless, Gu Yihan was still very grateful and said, "Thank you, Sister Wang. I will keep an eye on Qi Yanran."
After saying that, Gu Yihan said to the other person, "I have to go to the city today. If you have some free time, you can come to my house to play. I'll be going now."
After they parted ways, Gu Yihan quickened her pace as she left the family compound.
It takes an hour to get from the military base to the city by bus. Gu Yihan walked to the station and saw that the bus to the city had not yet departed, so she immediately boarded and found an empty seat.
"Sister-in-law, are you going to the city too?" Xiao Wu asked Gu Yihan in surprise.
Gu Yihan nodded and said, "There's an empty seat next to me, come and sit down." She then stood up and let Xiao Wu sit in the window seat next to her.
Xiao Wu looked at Gu Yihan with a smile and said, "Sister-in-law, why don't you go look for Mao Mao? It doesn't come home. Aren't you worried?"
Gu Yihan glanced at the cheerful Xiao Wu: "It's not like it can't find its way home. Since it's not going home, it's probably having a blast playing with the military dogs at the base."
Mao Mao isn't a silly dog; it's quite clever. It turns out it was following her to work because it was worried about her.
People boarded the bus one after another. An older woman brought a live rooster on board. Before she could even tie its beak, it started squawking as soon as it got on the bus.
The car was filled with constant complaints.
Soon, the bus was so crowded that people were packed together. Only when no one else could squeeze on did the driver say, "Hold on tight, we're about to leave."
Gu Yihan took out a handkerchief from her handbag and gently covered her mouth and nose, but the effect was minimal. The diesel smell was particularly strong in cars of this era.
"Sister-in-law, are you carsick?" Xiao Wu asked worriedly when he saw that Gu Yihan looked a little pale.
Gu Yihan nodded uncomfortably, her eyes closed. The smell in the car was mixed with the smell of diesel fuel, and her chest heaved, making her feel nauseous.
A middle-aged woman standing next to Gu Yihan's seat saw Xiao Wu in his military uniform, her eyes lit up, and she said arrogantly, "Comrade soldier, come out and let me sit for a while."
Xiao Wu glanced at the middle-aged woman. He instinctively wanted to stand up, but saw that Gu Yihan had her eyes closed and was pretending not to hear.
His sister-in-law wouldn't let him pass, so he couldn't get out and could only sit down awkwardly.
The middle-aged woman saw the soldier's actions and thought it was a good opportunity. Who would want to stand there for an hour? She felt uncomfortable if she didn't take advantage of the situation.
The middle-aged woman then patted Gu Yihan on the shoulder and said, "Make way for the soldier; he wants to give me his seat."
Gu Yihan opened her eyes uncomfortably and looked at the middle-aged woman standing in front of her, dressed in gray with patches and a fierce face. The sleeves and front of her clothes were so dirty that they could reflect a person's image.
A blazing fire appeared in Gu Yihan's eyes: "Why should I give you my seat?"
"Aren't soldiers supposed to serve the people?" the middle-aged woman said, glaring at Gu Yihan with an air of self-righteousness.
Gu Yihan was so angry she laughed: "Serving the people means giving up your seat!"
"What's it to you? He gave up his seat, not you. Why are you so anxious?" the middle-aged woman's shrill voice rang out.
Everyone on the bus was watching the argument between Gu Yihan and the middle-aged woman.
Gu Yihan was already feeling unwell, and the smell emanating from this middle-aged woman wafted into her nose, so strong that even a handkerchief couldn't cover it up.
"It has nothing to do with me. I don't want him to walk past me, and it has nothing to do with you either." After saying that, Gu Yihan ignored her completely.
The middle-aged woman retorted, "Are you sick? Why are you so nosy? What's wrong with me asking the People's Liberation Army to give me their seat?"
Gu Yihan suddenly stood up, startling Xiao Wu, who stared at her blankly.
A flame ignited in Gu Yihan's eyes: "I am sick, I have a heart condition, do you have medicine?"
Seeing her attitude, the middle-aged woman raised her arm to slap her, but Gu Yihan grabbed her wrist: "You expect the People's Liberation Army to give you a seat?"
"How can you be so shameless? Whenever there's a disaster or trouble, they're always the first to rush out and save you."
After Gu Yihan finished speaking, she immediately shook off the other person's arm: "If these PLA comrades hadn't been driven away by the Japanese back then, you would be eating this fat, big-eared, muscular face."
Several people on the bus couldn't help but burst out laughing when they heard what Gu Yihan said, and they cheered, "The young comrade is right."
The middle-aged woman noticed that everyone on the bus was siding with Gu Yihan.
She pretended to be in pain, clutching her chest and saying, "Oh dear, oh dear, my heart hurts so much, I can't take it anymore."
"Sister-in-law, how about I stand for a while? I'm not tired anyway, we'll be there soon." After saying that, Xiao Wu was about to stand up to offer his seat, but Gu Yihan pressed him down.
He glared at Xiao Wu and said, "I won't give her my seat. She has a lot of problems. If she has a chest pain, she should go see a doctor. If a soldier gives you his seat, do you think it's a magic cure that works instantly?"
The middle-aged woman stepped forward to tear at Gu Yihan, but Gu Yihan quickly pushed her away, saying, "Why aren't you pretending anymore? Stop gesturing in front of me. You dare to hit me?"
Gu Yihan deliberately grabbed the middle-aged woman's hand: "You dare to hit me? Go ahead and hit me, if you dare to hit me, I'll extort money from you." After saying that, she pulled the other woman's hand and made her hit her.
The middle-aged woman was stunned and didn't react. She let Gu Yihan pull her arm. She had never seen anyone like Gu Yihan before.
A woman on the bus noticed that the soldier had just called Gu Yihan "sister-in-law".
She said in a voice that everyone in the car could hear, "That woman must be a military wife."
When the middle-aged woman heard someone on the bus say that Gu Yihan was a military wife, her heart skipped a beat, and she pulled her hand away with all her might.
The middle-aged woman chuckled and said, "It's a misunderstanding. I'll just stand here for a bit, I'll just stand here for a bit."
After the middle-aged woman broke free, she obediently stopped talking.
Under Xiao Wu's surprised gaze, Gu Yihan calmly sat down, took out a handkerchief from her handbag, and covered her mouth and nose.
Xiao Wu's eyes held emotions that others couldn't decipher. He muttered softly, "Sister-in-law, you're amazing. Besides my dead mother, you're the first person to stand up for me."
Gu Yihan looked at Xiao Wu with a look of pity in her eyes.
She was clearly a child who lacked love. Having grown up in an orphanage, she knew better than anyone that you must love yourself before loving others, and that no one is more important than yourself.
