Chapter 163 Work

Chapter 163 Work

On the way back, Gu Yihan couldn't understand why Secretary Jiang had told her that she could solve the employment problem for the factory's family members.

This has nothing to do with her; she doesn't have any family members who need to work.

Lu Huailin, who was carrying water to wash clothes in the yard, heard the sound of the gate and looked up to see his tired wife.

He quickly put down the bucket of water he was holding, strode over to her, took the bicycle from her, and asked worriedly, "Honey, what's wrong today?"

Gu Yihan let go of the bicycle, rubbing her lower back, and said as she walked towards the bedroom, "I've been sitting all day, my butt hurts and my back aches."

Upon hearing this, Grandma Gu asked with a look of heartache, "My dear, what happened?"

"Grandma, let's eat later, I really don't have an appetite," Gu Yihan said pitifully to her great-aunt.

Grandma Gu nodded repeatedly and agreed, "Okay, we'll eat whenever we're hungry."

After parking his bicycle, Lu Huailin quickly caught up with his wife, put his arm around her shoulder, and led her to the bedroom, where he made her sit on the bed.

He gently massaged her waist with his hands, saying with concern, "Wife, if you're tired, just take a day off. I can afford to support you, and besides, our family isn't short of money."

Gu Yihan felt much better after Lu Huailin rubbed her, and was in the mood to speak: "Today's situation is special."

She told Lu Huailin about all the translations she had done that day, how she was so busy she didn't even have time to eat.

He also mentioned that the factory was going to add another production line.

Lu Huailin paused in massaging Gu Yihan's lower back, and asked casually, "Then wouldn't we need to hire workers?"

Gu Yihan didn't think much of it and repeated what Secretary Jiang had said.

Lu Huailin thought to himself, "My wife is really lucky. Commander Zhang is worried that there are too few job positions and he can't accommodate all the military wives."

He said, "Wife, I'm going to send a message to Commander Zhang."

Gu Yihan turned to look at Lu Huailin, puzzled, and asked, "What message are you exchanging?"

Lu Huailin hugged Gu Yihan and said with a smile, "The wives of the battalion commanders under my command can't join the army because they haven't found jobs yet."

"Since your factory is adding production lines, let Brigade Commander Zhang discuss it and try to secure a few more job openings."

Gu Yihan was stunned. She had forgotten that during this period, the local garrison was entitled to allocate quotas to military spouses from various factories.

Lu Huailin kissed his wife's cheek, let go of her, and said, "Wife, I'm going to Commander Zhang's house."

After saying that, he strode out of the bedroom.

I just stepped out of the living room.

Lu Huailin ran into Grandma Gu, who had just come out of the kitchen. He thought that he might be back late and was worried that his wife would be waiting for him to eat together.

He said, "Grandma, you can eat first if you're hungry, don't wait for me."

Grandma Gu told him to hurry up and leave, and he nodded in agreement.

...

Brigade Commander Zhang and his wife had just sat down to eat.

"Thump, thump, thump."

Hearing the knocking on the door in the courtyard, Brigade Commander Zhang muttered as he walked into the yard, "Which brat is it that comes right at mealtime?"

Upon opening the door, he was quite surprised to find Lu Huailin there: "That's strange. Ever since your wife got pregnant, we haven't seen you since training ended."

After saying that, Brigade Commander Zhang invited him into the house, saying as they walked, "You're in luck, kid. I just opened a jar of braised pork today. Come and have some with me."

Lu Huailin shook his head and said, "I've already eaten at home, sir. I have something to tell you."

At that time, it was not easy to get a meal of meat. Without any rations, it was impossible to eat at Commander Zhang's house.

When Commander Zhang heard that Lu Huailin had already eaten, he didn't stand on ceremony and patted him on the shoulder: "Come on, let's go to the study."

After the two sat down in the study, Brigade Commander Zhang took out a cigarette and handed it to Lu Huailin.

Lu Huailin did not answer, refusing, "My wife is pregnant, smoking is bad for the baby."

Brigade Commander Zhang glanced at him and said with a smile, "So many pregnant men smoke and it's fine, only your wife is being pretentious."

Lu Huailin didn't like others talking about his wife, not even joking about her. He said irritably, "Chief, what business is it of yours how my wife is? You're just being nosy."

He then changed the subject: "The textile factory has added a new production line, so they should be hiring."

Upon hearing this, Brigade Commander Zhang paused in his smoking, narrowing his eyes: "Your wife told you that?"

Lu Huailin didn't hide anything and told her about his wife's work as a translator on the production line.

That doesn't make sense. His wife is capable and well-liked, so why would he keep it a secret?

Brigade Commander Zhang stubbed out his cigarette, looked Lu Huailin up and down, and chuckled, "You're lucky. Such a good wife is more than a match for you."

Upon hearing this, Lu Huailin's lips curled up slightly. Of course, his wife was wonderful; she was one of a kind in the world.

"Tomorrow I'll talk to Old Yang at the textile factory and tell him that the production line jobs don't require such a high level of education, so we can keep a few more."

Lu Huailin didn't come here specifically to solve the employment problem for military spouses in other regiments; his own regiment needed help too.

"We need to reserve three jobs for the wives of soldiers in our regiment."

No sooner had Lu Huailin finished speaking than Brigade Commander Zhang roared.

"Dream on! Where in your regiment are there military spouses who need jobs?"

Lu Huailin wasn't about to do favors for others, and he sneered, "It's precisely because they don't have jobs that none of the military wives have come to accompany them to their posts."

"The battalion commanders under my command are all qualified to accompany the troops."

Must one have a job to accompany a soldier? Brigade Commander Zhang was so angry at Lu Huailin's absurd reasoning that he almost laughed.

Other military spouses don't have jobs, but they still follow their husbands to the military. The battalion commander's salary is not low, so how could he not support his family?

"There is no precedent for this, where someone occupies a workstation before even arriving."

Lu Huailin refused to back down: "This is all thanks to my wife. Without her information, our unit wouldn't have been able to get a single job."

Brigade Commander Zhang glanced at Lu Huailin's cold face, unable to detect anything unusual.

He realized what was going on then and sneered, "So you set me up just to win over your wife."

"The more jobs you secure at the textile factory, the more credit your wife will receive, and the family members who get the jobs will have to thank her."

Lu Huailin did not refute Brigade Commander Zhang's words. Since it was his wife's achievement, of course he had to say it and let everyone in the family compound know.

From now on, these military wives will have to think twice before they see his wife.

Neither of them wanted to back down, so they both sat on the stools without moving.

Brigade Commander Zhang's stomach also protested, making rumbling noises.

I regret it now; why didn't I eat first?

He rubbed his temples, glared at Lu Huailin who was sitting upright, and said angrily, "Get out...get out..."

Lu Huailin was secretly delighted, but his face remained serious: "Commander, about that job..."

Brigade Commander Zhang: "Go back first, I'll give you the results tomorrow."

Lu Huailin immediately stood up, saluted Brigade Commander Zhang, and then turned and left.
