Han Weidong's discharge from the hospital and his move into the Lin family's house surprised the other educated youth in the educated youth compound. They didn't know what was going on, and they had never heard of any relationship between Han Weidong and the Lin family.
"Li Gang, you're familiar with Han Weidong, do you know what's going on?"
Li Mingzhu, representing the female educated youth, voiced their concerns. They were even thinking of preparing some extra good food to nourish Han Weidong. With Han Weidong being so handsome, how many women could truly remain unmoved?
"There's nothing I can't say. Han Weidong's brother is friends with Captain Lin's son-in-law, so he specifically asked Captain Lin's family to help take care of his arm and help it heal."
Li Gang relayed Han Weidong's instructions, and that was the end of his responsibility. Oh dear, Brother Han, he's off enjoying himself, leaving them all behind. He had the good fortune to eat at Captain Lin's house today—it was delicious!
Li Gang and the others were no longer in the mood to say anything. They decided to go back to their rooms and lie down. They had finally managed to get a few days of rest, and they would be busy again after the New Year. Taking care of their health was the most important thing.
Han Weidong lay on the warm kang (a heated brick bed). This room belonged to Lin Tao, the son of the Lin family, who was said to be serving in the army in Beijing.
The room wasn't cluttered, but it felt cozy. There were many small items, probably collected by Lin Tao since childhood: a wooden gun, a slingshot, a wooden sword, comic books, marbles... Seeing these things, you could tell he had a happy childhood.
Han Weidong thought about the complicated relationships in his family and sighed, "What's the point of arguing? If you're capable, just rely on yourself!"
After eating and drinking his fill, Han Weidong felt drowsy and at ease, and soon fell asleep.
"Grandma, I'm here! Did you miss me?"
The voices came in before the sixty-nine people arrived.
"Little Liu Jiu, did you miss me?"
"Oh, Uncle Han, what are you doing at my grandma's house?"
Liu Jiu never expected to see Uncle Han; what a pleasant surprise!
"I'm here to recover from my injuries, what about you?"
"I came to eat my wife's delicious cooking; my mother said I should eat good food."
Bonnie carried Sanqi in and saw Liujiu and Han Weidong talking enthusiastically. She really didn't know what to say. Why do little kids like to look at faces so much? They like good-looking people.
"Mother, Grandma, Sanqi, take a look. I'm going to get some sea cucumbers and abalone. Tomorrow is the New Year, so I'll make a dish."
What did Han Weidong hear? "Retrieving sea cucumbers and abalone? Isn't that at the bottom of the sea?"
Bonnie and Han Weidong exchanged a casual greeting, then she carried her basket and left.
Liu Jiu, Da Bao, and Er Bao were watching San Qi together. Mom said that San Qi was too quick to roll over and could easily fall to the ground, so they had to keep an eye on her.
The lady and her grandmother were cooking something delicious in the kitchen, and Liu Jiu could smell the aroma.
Han Weidong had nothing to do, so he spent his time looking after the children with Liu Jiu and the others.
Oh dear, who would have thought that one day, Han Weidong would be helping Gu Ye take care of his child? No one would believe it if I told them.
Han Weidong was just a nobody in the eyes of the people in the compound. If it weren't for his father, who would pay any attention to him?
Gu Ye is a special presence in the compound. He is very capable, but he has a bad temper, always has a cold face, and doesn't give face to anyone.
Unexpectedly, Gu Ye became softer after getting married and having children, no longer so cold and hard, and more attached.
"Uh-huh……"
"What's wrong? What is he trying to do?"
Han Weidong didn't understand why Sanqi, who was lying down playing, suddenly started making "uh-huh" sounds. Was she going to cry? What should he do? Should he pick her up?
Han Weidong reached out, unsure how to hold such a small child, at a loss for what to do.
"Uncle Han, don't move, Sanqi is pooping."
As soon as Liu Jiu finished speaking, a sour, foul smell wafted out. Han Weidong froze; he almost picked her up.
"Grandma, Sanqi pooped."
Liu Jiu ran to the door and called to her grandmother in the kitchen, covering her nose as she said, "Sanqi's poop really stinks."
Bao Ni's mother brought over a basin of warm water from the kitchen. Looking at the expressions of the people in the room, she thought to herself, "Really, who hasn't pooped when they were little?"
Bao Ni's mother quickly washed Sanqi's bottom, changed her diaper, and took the basin of water out.
After washing the rings with Sanqi and washing her hands with soap, Bao Ni's mother went back to the kitchen to continue her work.
Liu Jiu didn't want to smell the stench in the house, so she asked Da Bao to stay inside and watch over San Qi while she, Xiao Bao, and Uncle Han went to the yard for some fresh air.
Lin Bo entered at that moment, dressed in a gray military uniform and carrying a large duffel bag.
Who are you?
Liu Jiu saw a stranger enter and took the initiative.
"You're Liu Jiu, right?"
Lin Bo saw two children in the yard; they were probably his older brother's second child and his older sister's sixth child, their ages matched. When he left, the second child and sixth child couldn't even walk yet. As for the young man with a sling, he didn't know who he was; none of the names matched.
"Grandma, someone who knows me but I don't know has come."
Liu Jiu had a loud voice and immediately called out her maternal grandmother.
"What do you mean by 'knowing each other'? Liu Jiu, what are you talking about?"
Hearing Liu Jiu's shout, but not quite understanding what he was saying, Bao Ni's mother quickly came out.
"mother!"
"Lin Bo? You little rascal, you finally came home. You've been gone for so long, I thought you'd forgotten which way your door faces."
Looking at her youngest son, who had grown even taller, Bao Ni's mother cried and pounded his back.
"Mother, I'm back now."
"Have you eaten? Are you hungry? Why have you lost weight? Are you not getting enough to eat in the army?"
Upon seeing her youngest son, Bao Ni's mother didn't know where to begin; she simply had a lot to say.
Hearing the noise, Grandma Lin came out and was very excited to see Lin Bo.
"Grandma, I'm back."
"It's good to be back. Come inside and rest for a while. Grandma will get you something nice to eat."
Lin Bo was ushered into the house and saw Da Bao, who was watching the child on the kang (a heated brick bed).
"Dabao, your uncle is back. Do you remember your uncle?"
"I remember, Uncle."
Da Bao remembered his uncle and grinned.
"Is this my sister's Panax notoginseng? Is that the name mentioned in the letter?"
"It's Sanqi, and it can't sit up yet."
After putting his things away, Lin Bo looked at his mother and the children. He was home; he was really back.
"Where are my dad and older brother? The child is here. Where is my sister?"
I didn't see Lin's father or his sister. What were they doing?
"Your dad and your older brother are at the brigade headquarters. Your sister went to collect sea cucumbers and will be back soon."
Bao Ni's mother wanted to look at her son a little longer, but she couldn't; there was still a lot of work to be done in the kitchen.
Before leaving, she told Lin Bo about Han Weidong's identity and let him know what was going on. Then, Bao Ni's mother went off to do her work again.
Han Weidong returned to his room and, seeing the families reunited, he felt a pang of homesickness. Although he disliked the many things that happened at home, his brother, mother, and father still spoiled him.
I don't want to think about it anymore. I've already helped my family; what family's child doesn't go to the countryside? If I leave, it'll save people from attacking his father. It's a contribution to the family; I've enjoyed the benefits, so I have to give something in return!
Bonnie doesn't know her brother is back yet; she's happily fishing for sea cucumbers at the bottom of the sea!
