Chapter 16: The Beginning of Newlywed Life

Bonnie didn't get to eat in the end and fell asleep from exhaustion.

Gu Ye left home in high spirits to visit his older brother in the dormitory.

"Oh, you're just getting up?" Gu Ze looked at the different Gu Ye; this big boy had transformed into a real man.

"Um, bro, have you eaten?" Gu Ye was a little embarrassed by his brother's teasing.

"I've already eaten, but you haven't?" Gu Ze looked at his more popular younger brother and felt relieved.

"I'm not hungry. When are you going back?" Gu Ye was hoping his brother would leave soon; he couldn't stand the strange look his brother was giving him.

"I'm taking the boat to the city this afternoon, and the train back to Beijing tonight." Gu Ze had only managed to squeeze out some time; he'd be busy when he got back.

"I'm in such a rush, I haven't even bought anything for my sister-in-law and Xuanyu yet!" Gu Ye was quite fond of his nephew.

"Take leave to go home at the end of the year, and bring it to them then. Grandpa misses you, and he wants his new daughter-in-law to meet him." Gu Ze had already come up with a reason.

“You haven’t gone back even once since you came here. You didn’t care what others said before, but now that you have a wife and children in the future, they can’t possibly not care, right?” Gu Ze analyzed for him, his ultimate goal being to trick Gu Ye into going home.

"We'll see. I'll ask Lin Baoni later and see if she wants to go." Gu Ye didn't directly refuse like before, nor did he agree. Instead, he sought his wife's opinion, which was an improvement.

Gu Ze didn't try to persuade him any further. Change had to be done step by step, and he couldn't rush it.

After seeing his brother off, Gu Ye returned to the family compound. He had three days off, and after accompanying Lin Baoni to visit her parents' home the day after tomorrow, he had to go back to work.

The room was quiet; Lin Baoni was still sleeping.

Gu Ye picked up his lunchbox and went to the cafeteria. He got two portions of rice, and fearing it wouldn't be enough, he also got an extra portion of vegetables. He still had some steamed buns left from breakfast.

After putting the food in the kitchen, Gu Ye came into the room. "Lin Baoni, wake up, it's time to eat." Lin Baoni buried her head under the covers, not wanting to get up.

Gu Ye threw back the covers, and Lin Baoni opened her eyes, glared at him, got up angrily, and went to wash up.

Lin Baoni rarely sleeps in; she was trained by Lao Jiang to have a biological clock that wakes her up at a certain time.

"Let's eat first. Are you hungry?" Gu Ye was hungry.

"Do you think I'm hungry, Comrade Gu Ye? You can't do this. Everything has its limits, otherwise you'll break down." Bao Ni said earnestly. Gu Ye replied sincerely, "No problem, I'll definitely be careful. It's for a lifetime!"

Bonnie was really hungry and didn't have time to chatter with him; eating was the most important thing.

The two devoured all the food, including their breakfast.

"Why are you staring at me?" Lin Baoni glared at Gu Ye, who was staring at her. Is he crazy?

"I wonder where you ate all that food? You're so small!" Lin's mother had said that Lin Baoni had a big appetite, but she didn't expect her to be this big, almost as big as him.

"It's gone into my stomach!" Bonnie didn't care; being full was the important thing.

The two tidied up the kitchen together and returned to the living room.

"What do you want to do this afternoon?" Gu Ye asked Lin Baoni, though he didn't really know how to get along with her.

"Nothing much, just tidy up the clothes and stuff." Lin Baoni didn't know what to do either, and suddenly found herself with nothing to do, feeling a little uncomfortable.

"Do you have a lot of stuff? Do you need my help?" Gu Ye was quite good at packing.

"Oh, right, here you go." Gu Ye took a box from the cabinet, opened it, and inside were two bankbooks.

Bonnie had never seen a passbook like this before; she thought passbooks didn't exist back then.

"What are these? Your savings?" Lin Baoni asked him, holding up two antique-looking bankbooks.

"One is my salary savings, and the other is the money my mother left to each of us." Gu Ye couldn't help but feel depressed when he thought of his mother, and when he thought of that woman, a surge of anger welled up inside him.

"Is this handing over control of the treasury?" Bonnie noticed that something was wrong with Gu Ye, probably because he had thought of something.

"Yes, it's all yours now!" Looking at Lin Baoni's round eyes, which were filled with a smile, Gu Ye's anger subsided a little.

"Don't regret it! I need to see how much Gu Ye has, whether it's enough for me to eat?" Bonnie muttered jokingly.

"Wow! Gu Ye, you're such a money-saving machine!" The number on the savings account is 4900. This guy hasn't spent much money all these years!

"What a fuss! I don't smoke or drink, and I'm in the army every day. I don't have many expenses. Except for sending some money to some comrades who are in need, everything else is here." Gu Ye was amused by Lin Baoni's exaggerated exclamation.

"Ah! Gu Ye, are you sure this was left to you by your mother, and not to you three siblings?" Bonnie looked at another bankbook, and counted it carefully again, still with so many zeros. She was neither seeing things nor miscounting.

"Yes, this is for me. I'll tell you about it another time. I don't want to mention those despicable people on this joyous day."

Gu Ye didn't want to mention Gu Xiangdong and that woman at all; they were disgusting.

Bonnie didn't press for details. She would just tell him when she felt like it. She wasn't a paparazzi who lived off gossip.

"Okay, put this money away for now, but where are the receipts?" Lin Baoni only saw two passbooks, but no receipts.

"Ah, here it is." Gu Ye took out a bunch of colorful tickets, as well as grain and oil ration books, non-staple food ration books, and a bunch of loose change from another cabinet.

Bonnie was quite interested in these things; in this era, life was inseparable from various tickets, but money didn't cost much.

Bao Ni started counting the coupons: grain coupons, oil coupons, sugar coupons, meat coupons, soap coupons, shoe coupons... This time, Lin Bao Ni believed it; these coupons covered everything.

Select the items that are about to expire and use them before they expire, otherwise they will be wasted.

She counted the change again: ten yuan, five yuan, one yuan, five fen... After all these days, Bonnie still wasn't quite used to the values of one fen and two fen.

After tidying everything up, Bonnie put away the passbook and placed the loose change and receipts in a box for regular use.

"Here you go, this is my secret stash."

Bonnie also took out her own metal box, which was quite large.

Gu Ye didn't expect Bao Ni to have money, nor did he expect her to be able to come up with it.

"What are you standing there for? I may not have as much money as you, but it's all money I've saved up little by little since I was a child." Bonnie said, opening the box and pouring out the contents.

The rolls came out first, and the five-yuan and ten-yuan ones are left.

"Put it back, don't spill it, it'll be a hassle to pack it up again." Gu Ye carefully put the money rolls he had found back, looking quite adorable.

On their first day of marriage, the couple handed over their respective assets, emphasizing the importance of honesty and openness as they plan to live together, raise children, and share their lives.

Lin Baoni is confident that things will go smoothly after this good start.
