Chapter 186 Busy with Farming During Spring Drought

"Gu Ye, has Political Commissar Wang's new wife passed the political vetting?" After dinner, Bao Ni couldn't help but ask Gu Ye.

"Political Commissar Wang? He should have passed the test, right? If he hadn't, he shouldn't be able to come with the troops, right? What's wrong? Is there something amiss?" Gu Ye asked, somewhat puzzled.

"No, it's just that when I saw Political Commissar Wang's new wife today, I had a feeling I can't quite put my finger on." Bonnie couldn't explain what that feeling was either; it was just inexplicable.

"Alright, I'll find out more about her later and see what's going on. If you don't like her, stay away from her." Gu Ye added worriedly. His wife was reckless and dared to do anything.

"I know, I'm not a tiger. Sigh, what's with that look? You're really something else, aren't you?" The two of them started bickering and making a ruckus, almost waking up Liu Jiu and San Qi next door.

Bonnie and her friends haven't finished planting their corn yet, and their shoulders are all chafed from carrying water these past two days.

"Sister Bonnie, there's only a little left. There's hope of finishing planting today. I can't even bear to lift my shoulders. This is the first time in my life I've felt so tired from working!" Li Gang cried. He thought that was the limit before, but he never expected that carrying water and planting would be so tiring.

"This is nothing. Once the seedlings sprout, if there's still not enough rain, carrying water to irrigate the fields will be the real hard work. Back then, it felt like there was no end in sight as we poured bucket after bucket of water down the drain." Bonnie had experienced a severe drought, and back then, it felt endless. Even though she was strong, she couldn't feel any hope.

"May Goddess Mazu bless us with abundant rainfall. I pray sincerely and praise you in my heart every day."

Li Gang was terrified; he developed a psychological trauma from carrying water for the past few days.

"Haha... Serves you right, you were so smug. Now you know how tough it is, huh? Let's see if you'll still be picky about food in the future." Zhang Yuanchao gloated. He was just putting on a brave face; he was really exhausted.

They didn't finish planting all the land until the last rays of the sun had completely set.

"Finally finished? Is Bonnie's thing over yet?" Han Weidong stood up and glanced in the direction of Bonnie's wasteland.

"It should be done soon. Gu Ye is off today, and he brought a few comrades to help. It should be done soon." Zhou Chen saw Gu Ye leading a few soldiers to the wasteland this morning, so they should have finished.

"Aren't you going back to spend the night here?" Bonnie asked as she came over from the wasteland, where she saw several people looking around.

"Bonnie, are you done with that?"

"It's all done, let's go back." Bonnie knew they were waiting for her, so she called out and they went back together.

In the evening, Gu Ye cooked dinner and treated his comrades to a meal. After helping with the work all day, Bao Ni even opened a can of meat. There was no other way; they hadn't left the island recently, and their food supplies were running low.

After a lively meal, they had a day off tomorrow. Bao Ni slept until late morning before Gu Sanqi woke her up, saying he was going to his maternal grandmother's house.

Bonnie got up and washed up. Comrade Gu Ye had already finished washing all the clothes. What a good comrade.

"Grandma, I'm hungry!" Sanqi looked at Bao Ni's mother with a pitiful expression, her face full of accusation.

"Didn't you eat breakfast?" Bao Ni's mother picked up her eldest grandson and patted his little belly.

"Mom just got up, and my tummy is already flat." Sanqi patted his belly. His mom was such a lazybones, never getting out of bed.

Bao Ni's mother carried San Qi to the kitchen, and Bao Ni went into her grandmother's room, where she was still asleep.

"Grandma, what are you doing?"

Bonnie looked at the fabric in her grandmother's hand. Was she going to make clothes?

“Isn’t Lin Bo getting married? I thought I should at least make him a new quilt. That’s why I’m preparing it.” Grandma touched the fabric. Her eyesight was failing, and she couldn’t make it herself anymore.

"Oh dear, just let my mother and aunt do it." Bao Ni knew that her grandmother's eyesight was failing and she didn't do needlework much anymore.

"I didn't do anything, I just found out to see if it was enough." Grandma touched Bonnie's shoulder; she had worked hard all spring, and her shoulder was swollen.

"It's nothing, you can sleep a little longer." Grandma handed Bonnie a pillow and let her lie down and continue sleeping.

"Hmm, I'm still a little sleepy. I'll sleep a little longer. Grandma, wake me up for lunch." Bonnie drifted off to sleep.

"Sis, dinner's ready." Bonnie was dreaming about eating a pork knuckle and was a little confused when she was woken up.

"Huh? When is it?"

"Sis, are you still half asleep? It's already noon, get up and eat. Liu Jiu is back." Lin Bo had taken a break in the afternoon and came back for a stroll with his girlfriend.

"Okay, I'm coming right away." Bonnie rubbed her face, perked up, put on her shoes, and got out of bed.

"Sister Bao Ni, dinner's ready." Cao Wenli greeted Bao Ni as soon as she saw her come out. She could tell that Bao Ni was the most favored person in the family.

"Wenli's here. Have the houses in the family compound been completed yet? I've been busy farming these past few days and haven't had time to look after you." Bonnie really hadn't had time for them; she hadn't visited them even once.

"Everything is ready. We can move in right after the group wedding." Cao Wenli was quite happy. She decorated her own little home herself, and her in-laws didn't interfere. They gave her everything she needed, which was great.

"By the way, Lin Bo, what kind of gift do you want for your wedding? Let me see if I can make it happen for you?" Bonnie suddenly remembered that she hadn't prepared a wedding gift for Lin Bo yet. Since she happened to meet him, she thought she could see if he needed anything within her means.

"Sister, you really mean what you said." Lin Bo didn't stand on ceremony with his sister. Over the years, he was very grateful to his sister for helping him and sending him to the army. He would never forget his roots and had never missed sending gifts to Liu Jiu and San Qi every year. He had to repay his sister.

"Hmm, when has Lin Baoni ever gone back on her word? What a joke!"

"Hehe... I want a red dress, but we couldn't find a suitable one in the city." Lin Bo was thinking about attending a group wedding for his wedding, so he wanted to buy his wife a red dress to create a beautiful memory.

"A red dress? Okay, I actually have a new one. My sister-in-law sent it to me last year, but I haven't had time to wear it. You two come to my house tonight and see if you can wear it." Bonnie actually has quite a few dresses; her sister-in-law sends her clothes every year, at least one dress a year. Unfortunately, she's too busy and doesn't have time to dress herself up, so they're all just sitting in her closet.

Gu Ye was on night duty. Bao Ni didn't go home until after dinner. Lin Bo and Cao Wenli went to see Bulaji together.

“Here it is, this one. See if you can tell I haven’t worn it before? I’ve never worn it, it hasn’t even been washed.” Bonnie found the classic red dress and handed it to Cao Wenli.

"It looks great, thank you, I love it." Cao Wenli held it up to herself and found it was the perfect size.

"Sixty-nine, thirty-seven, your uncle will give you a big red envelope then, okay?"

“Okay, a big one.” Sanqi didn’t stand on ceremony at all; he liked red envelopes.

“Okay, big one.” Lin Bo lifted up the three-seven, making him shout loudly.

Isn't that what life is all about? Finding joy in hardship, even when life is as bitter as gall, you can still find a sliver of sweetness.
